Matthew 27:1 | And when morning was come, all the chief priests and ancients of the people took counsel against Jesus, that they might put him to death. | And when it was morning all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus so that they might put him to death. | When morning came all the High Priests and the Elders of the people consulted together against Jesus to put Him to death; |
Matthew 27:2 | And they brought him bound, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. | And having bound him they led him away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor. | and binding Him they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate the Governor. |
Matthew 27:3 | Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repenting himself, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and ancients, | Then Judas, who delivered him up, seeing that he had been condemned, filled with remorse, returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, | Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He was condemned, smitten with remorse he brought back the thirty shekels to the High Priests and Elders |
Matthew 27:4 | Saying: I have sinned in betraying innocent blood. But they said: What is that to us? look thou to it. | saying, I have sinned [in] having delivered up guiltless blood. But they said, What is that to us? see *thou* [to that]. | and said, "I have sinned, in betraying to death one who is innocent." "What does that matter to us?" they replied; it is your business." |
Matthew 27:5 | And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed: and went and hanged himself with an halter. | And having cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, he left the place, and went away and hanged himself. | Flinging the shekels into the Sanctuary he left the place, and went and hanged himself. |
Matthew 27:6 | But the chief priests having taken the pieces of silver, said: It is not lawful to put them into the corbona, because it is the price of blood. | And the chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, It is not lawful to cast them into the Corban, since it is [the] price of blood. | When the High Priests had gathered up the money they said, "It is illegal to put it into the Treasury, because it is the price of blood." |
Matthew 27:7 | And after they had consulted together, they bought with them the potter's field, to be a burying place for strangers. | And having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter for a burying-ground for strangers. | So after consulting together they spent the money in the purchase of the Potter's Field as a burial place for people not belonging to the city; |
Matthew 27:8 | For this cause the field was called Haceldama, that is, The field of blood, even to this day. | Wherefore that field has been called Blood-field unto this day. | for which reason that piece of ground received the name, which it still bears, of `the Field of Blood.' |
Matthew 27:9 | Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was prized, whom they prized of the children of Israel. | Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet, saying, And I took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was set a price on, whom [they who were] of the sons of Israel had set a price on, | Then were fulfilled the words spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah, "And I took the thirty shekels, the price of the prized one on whom Israelites had set a price, |
Matthew 27:10 | And they gave them unto the potter's field, as the Lord appointed to me. | and they gave them for the field of the potter, according as [the] Lord commanded me. | and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me." |
Matthew 27:11 | And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus saith to him: Thou sayest it. | But Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor questioned him, saying, Art *thou* the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, Thou sayest. | Meanwhile Jesus was brought before the Governor, and the latter put the question, "Are you the King of the Jews?" "I am their King," He answered. |
Matthew 27:12 | And when he was accused by the chief priests and ancients, he answered nothing. | And when he was accused of the chief priests and the elders, he answered nothing. | When however the High Priests and the Elders kept bringing their charges against Him, He said not a word in reply. |
Matthew 27:13 | Then Pilate saith to him: Dost not thou hear how great testimonies they allege against thee? | Then says Pilate to him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? | "Do you not hear," asked Pilate, "what a mass of evidence they are bringing against you?" |
Matthew 27:14 | And he answered him to never a word; so that the governor wondered exceedingly. | And he answered him not so much as one word, so that the governor wondered exceedingly. | But He made no reply to a single accusation, so that the Governor was greatly astonished. |
Matthew 27:15 | Now upon the solemn day the governor was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whom they would. | Now at [the] feast the governor was accustomed to release one prisoner to the crowd, whom they would. | "Now it was the Governor's custom at the Festival to release some one prisoner, whomsoever the populace desired; |
Matthew 27:16 | And he had then a notorious prisoner, that was called Barabbas. | And they had then a notable prisoner, named Barabbas. | and at this time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. |
Matthew 27:17 | They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said: Whom will you that I release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus that is called Christ? | They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom will ye that I release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? | So when they were now assembled Pilate appealed to them. Matthew 27:19 | And as he was sitting in the place of judgment, his wife sent to him, saying: Have thou nothing to do with that just man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. | But, as he was sitting on the judgment-seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that righteous [man]; for I have suffered to-day many things in a dream because of him. | While he was sitting on the tribunal a message came to him from his wife. "Have nothing to do with that innocent man," she said, "for during the night I have suffered terribly in a dream through him." |
Matthew 27:20 | But the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people, that they should ask Barabbas, and make Jesus away. | But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds that they should beg for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. | The High Priests, however, and the Elders urged the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to demand the death of Jesus. |
Matthew 27:21 | And the governor answering, said to them: Whether will you of the two to be released unto you? But they said, Barabbas. | And the governor answering said to them, Which of the two will ye that I release unto you? They say all: Let him be crucified. | Pilate says to them, What then shall I do with Jesus, who is called Christ? Matthew 27:23 | The governor said to them: Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying: Let him be crucified. | And the governor said, What evil then has he done? But they cried more than ever, saying, Let him be crucified. | "Why, what crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they kept on furiously shouting, "Let him be crucified!" |
Matthew 27:24 | And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made; taking water washed his hands before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this just man; look you to it. | And Pilate, seeing that it availed nothing, but that rather a tumult was arising, having taken water, washed his hands before the crowd, saying, I am guiltless of the blood of this righteous one: see *ye* [to it]. | So when he saw that he could gain nothing, but that on the contrary there was a riot threatening, he called for water and washed his hands in sight of them all, saying, "I am not responsible for this murder: you must answer for it." |
