Romans 13:1 | Let every soul be subject to higher powers: for there is no power but from God: and those that are, are ordained of God. | Let every soul be subject to the authorities that are above [him]. For there is no authority except from God; and those that exist are set up by God. | Let every individual be obedient to those who rule over him; for no one is a ruler except by God's permission, and our present rulers have had their rank and power assigned to them by Him. |
Romans 13:2 | Therefore he that resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God. And they that resist, purchase to themselves damnation. | So that he that sets himself in opposition to the authority resists the ordinance of God; and they who [thus] resist shall bring sentence of guilt on themselves. | Therefore the man who rebels against his ruler is resisting God's will; and those who thus resist will bring punishment upon themselves. |
Romans 13:3 | For princes are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good: and thou shalt have praise from the same. | For rulers are not a terror to a good work, but to an evil [one]. Dost thou desire then not to be afraid of the authority? practise [what is] good, and thou shalt have praise from it; | For judges and magistrates are to be feared not by right-doers but by wrong-doers. You desire do you not? to have no reason to fear your ruler. Well, do the thing that is right, and then he will commend you. |
Romans 13:4 | For he is God's minister to thee, for good. But if thou do that which is evil, fear: for he beareth not the sword in vain. For he is God's minister: an avenger to execute wrath upon him that doth evil. | for it is God's minister to thee for good. But if thou practisest evil, fear; for it bears not the sword in vain; for it is God's minister, an avenger for wrath to him that does evil. | For he is God's servant for your benefit. But if you do what is wrong, be afraid. He does not wear the sword to no purpose: he is God's servant an administrator to inflict punishment upon evil-doers. |
Romans 13:5 | Wherefore be subject of necessity, not only for wrath, but also for conscience' sake. | Wherefore it is necessary to be subject, not only on account of wrath, but also on account of conscience. | We must obey therefore, not only in order to escape punishment, but also for conscience' sake. |
Romans 13:6 | For therefore also you pay tribute. For they are the ministers of God, serving unto this purpose. | For on this account ye pay tribute also; for they are God's officers, attending continually on this very thing. | Why, this is really the reason you pay taxes; for tax-gatherers are ministers of God, devoting their energies to this very work. |
Romans 13:7 | Render therefore to all men their dues. Tribute, to whom tribute is due: custom, to whom custom: fear, to whom fear: honour, to whom honour. | Render to all their dues: to whom tribute [is due], tribute; to whom custom, custom; to whom fear, fear; to whom honour, honour. | Pay promptly to all men what is due to them: taxes to those to whom taxes are due, toll to those to whom toll is due, respect to those to whom respect is due, honour to those to whom honour is due. |
Romans 13:8 | Owe no man any thing, but to love one another. For he that loveth his neighbour, hath fulfilled the law. | Owe no one anything, unless to love one another: for he that loves another has fulfilled the law. | Owe nothing to any one except mutual love; for he who loves his fellow man has satisfied the demands of Law. |
Romans 13:9 | For Thou shalt not commit adultery: Thou shalt not kill: Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness: Thou shalt not covet: and if there be any other commandment, it is comprised in this word, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. | For, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not lust; and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. | For the precepts, "Thou shalt not commit adultery," "Thou shalt do no murder," "Thou shalt not steal," "Thou shalt not covet," and all other precepts, are summed up in this one command, "Thou shalt love thy fellow man as much as thou lovest thyself." |
Romans 13:10 | The love of our neighbour worketh no evil. Love therefore is the fulfilling of the law. | Love works no ill to its neighbour; love therefore [is the] whole law. | Love avoids doing any wrong to one's fellow man, and is therefore complete obedience to Law. |
Romans 13:11 | And that knowing the season; that it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep. For now our salvation is nearer than when we believed. | This also, knowing the time, that it is already time that *we* should be aroused out of sleep; for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed. | Carry out these injunctions because you know the critical period at which we are living, and that it is now high time, to rouse yourselves from sleep; for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first became believers. |
Romans 13:12 | The night is passed, and the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armour of light. | The night is far spent, and the day is near; let us cast away therefore the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. | The night is far advanced, and day is about to dawn. We must therefore lay aside the deeds of darkness, and clothe ourselves with the armour of Light. |
Romans 13:13 | Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy: | As in the day, let us walk becomingly; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and lasciviousness, not in strife and emulation. | Living as we do in broad daylight, let us conduct ourselves becomingly, not indulging in revelry and drunkenness, nor in lust and debauchery, nor in quarrelling and jealousy. |
Romans 13:14 | But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh in its concupiscences. | But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not take forethought for the flesh to [fulfil its] lusts. | On the contrary, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for gratifying your earthly cravings. |
