Romans 7:1Know you not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) that the law hath dominion over a man, as long as it liveth?Are ye ignorant, brethren, (for I speak to those knowing law,) that law rules over a man as long as he lives?Brethren, do you not know for I am writing to people acquainted with the Law that it is during our lifetime that we are subject to the Law?
Romans 7:2For the woman that hath an husband, whilst her husband liveth is bound to the law. But if her husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.For the married woman is bound by law to her husband so long as he is alive; but if the husband should die, she is clear from the law of the husband:A wife, for instance, whose husband is living is bound to him by the Law; but if her husband dies the law that bound her to him has now no hold over her.
Romans 7:3Therefore, whilst her husband liveth, she shall be called an adulteress, if she be with another man: but if her husband be dead, she is delivered from the law of her husband; so that she is not an adulteress, if she be with another man.so then, the husband being alive, she shall be called an adulteress if she be to another man; but if the husband should die, she is free from the law, so as not to be an adulteress, though she be to another man.This accounts for the fact that if during her husband's life she lives with another man, she will be stigmatized as an adulteress; but that if her husband is dead she is no longer under the old prohibition, and even though she marries again, she is not an adulteress.
Romans 7:4Therefore, my brethren, you also are become dead to the law, by the body of Christ; that you may belong to another, who is risen again from the dead, that we may bring forth fruit to God.So that, my brethren, *ye* also have been made dead to the law by the body of the Christ, to be to another, who has been raised up from among [the] dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.So, my brethren, to you also the Law died through the incarnation of Christ, that you might be wedded to Another, namely to Him who rose from the dead in order that we might yield fruit to God.
Romans 7:5For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members, to bring forth fruit unto death.For when we were in the flesh the passions of sins, which [were] by the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit to death;For whilst we were under the thraldom of our earthly natures, sinful passions made sinful by the Law were always being aroused to action in our bodily faculties that they might yield fruit to death.
Romans 7:6But now we are loosed from the law of death, wherein we were detained; so that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.but now we are clear from the law, having died in that in which we were held, so that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in oldness of letter.But seeing that we have died to that which once held us in bondage, the Law has now no hold over us, so that we render a service which, instead of being old and formal, is new and spiritual.
Romans 7:7What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? God forbid. But I do not know sin, but by the law; for I had not known concupiscence, if the law did not say: Thou shalt not covet.What shall we say then? [is] the law sin? Far be the thought. But I had not known sin, unless by law: for I had not had conscience also of lust unless the law had said, Thou shalt not lust;What follows? Is the Law itself a sinful thing? No, indeed; on the contrary, unless I had been taught by the Law, I should have known nothing of sin as sin. For instance, I should not have known what covetousness is, if the Law had not repeatedly said, "Thou shalt not covet."
Romans 7:8But sin taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.but sin, getting a point of attack by the commandment, wrought in me every lust; for without law sin [was] dead.Sin took advantage of this, and by means of the Commandment stirred up within me every kind of coveting; for apart from Law sin would be dead.
Romans 7:9And I lived some time without the law. But when the commandment came, sin revived,But *I* was alive without law once; but the commandment having come, sin revived, but *I* died.Once, apart from Law, I was alive, but when the Commandment came, sin sprang into life, and I died;
Romans 7:10And I died. And the commandment that was ordained to life, the same was found to be unto death to me.And the commandment, which [was] for life, was found, [as] to me, itself [to be] unto death:and, as it turned out, the very Commandment which was to bring me life, brought me death.
Romans 7:11For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, seduced me, and by it killed me.for sin, getting a point of attack by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew [me].For sin seized the advantage, and by means of the Commandment it completely deceived me, and also put me to death.
Romans 7:12Wherefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.So that the law indeed [is] holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.So that the Law itself is holy, and the Commandment is holy, just and good.
Romans 7:13Was that then which is good, made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it may appear sin, by that which is good, wrought death in me; that sin, by the commandment, might become sinful above measure.Did then that which is good become death to me? Far be the thought. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death to me by that which is good; in order that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.Did then a thing which is good become death to me? No, indeed, but sin did; so that through its bringing about death by means of what was good, it might be seen in its true light as sin, in order that by means of the Commandment the unspeakable sinfulness of sin might be plainly shown.
Romans 7:14For we know that the law is spiritual; but I am carnal, sold under sin.For we know that the law is spiritual: but *I* am fleshly, sold under sin.For we know that the Law is a spiritual thing; but I am unspiritual the slave, bought and sold, of sin.
Romans 7:15For that which I work, I understand not. For I do not that good which I will; but the evil which I hate, that I do.For that which I do, I do not own: for not what I will, this I do; but what I hate, this I practise.For what I do, I do not recognize as my own action. What I desire to do is not what I do, but what I am averse to is what I do.
Romans 7:16If then I do that which I will not, I consent to the law, that it is good.But if what I do not will, this I practise, I consent to the law that [it is] right.But if I do that which I do not desire to do, I admit the excellence of the Law,
Romans 7:17Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.Now then [it is] no longer *I* [that] do it, but the sin that dwells in me.and now it is no longer I that do these things, but the sin which has its home within me does them.
Romans 7:18For I know that there dwelleth not in me, that is to say, in my flesh, that which is good. For to will, is present with me; but to accomplish that which is good, I find not.For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, good does not dwell: for to will is there with me, but to do right [I find] not.For I know that in me, that is, in my lower self, nothing good has its home; for while the will to do right is present with me, the power to carry it out is not.
Romans 7:19For the good which I will, I do not; but the evil which I will not, that I do.For I do not practise the good that I will; but the evil I do not will, that I do.For what I do is not the good thing that I desire to do; but the evil thing that I desire not to do, is what I constantly do.
Romans 7:20Now if I do that which I will not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.But if what *I* do not will, this I practise, [it is] no longer *I* [that] do it, but the sin that dwells in me.But if I do that which I desire not to do, it can no longer be said that it is I who do it, but the sin which has its home within me does it.
Romans 7:21I find then a law, that when I have a will to do good, evil is present with me.I find then the law upon *me* who will to practise what is right, that with *me* evil is there.I find therefore the law of my nature to be that when I desire to do what is right, evil is lying in ambush for me.
Romans 7:22For I am delighted with the law of God, according to the inward man:For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man:For in my inmost self all my sympathy is with the Law of God;
Romans 7:23But I see another law in my members, fighting against the law of my mind, and captivating me in the law of sin, that is in my members.but I see another law in my members, warring in opposition to the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which exists in my members.but I discover within me a different Law at war with the Law of my understanding, and leading me captive to the Law which is everywhere at work in my body the Law of sin.
Romans 7:24Unhappy man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death?O wretched man that I [am]! who shall deliver me out of this body of death?(Unhappy man that I am! who will rescue me from this death-burdened body?
Romans 7:25The grace of God, by Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, I myself, with the mind serve the law of God; but with the flesh, the law of sin.I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then *I* *myself* with the mind serve God's law; but with the flesh sin's law.Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!) To sum up then, with my understanding, I my true self am in servitude to the Law of God, but with my lower nature I am in servitude to the Law of sin.
