2nd-Peter 2:1 | But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be among you lying teachers, who shall bring in sects of perdition, and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction. | But there were false prophets also among the people, as there shall be also among you false teachers, who shall bring in by the bye destructive heresies, and deny the master that bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction; | But there also arose false prophets among the people, as among you also there will be false teachers, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction. |
2nd-Peter 2:2 | And many shall follow their riotousnesses, through whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. | and many shall follow their dissolute ways, through whom the way of the truth shall be blasphemed. | Many will follow their destructive ways, and as a result, the way of the truth will be maligned. |
2nd-Peter 2:3 | And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you. Whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their perdition slumbereth not. | And through covetousness, with well-turned words, will they make merchandise of you: for whom judgment of old is not idle, and their destruction slumbers not. | In covetousness will they exploit you with deceptive words: whose sentence now from of old doesn't linger, and their destruction will not slumber. |
2nd-Peter 2:4 | For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but delivered them, drawn down by infernal ropes to the lower hell, unto torments, to be reserved unto judgment: | For if God spared not [the] angels who had sinned, but having cast them down to the deepest pit of gloom has delivered them to chains of darkness [to be] kept for judgment; | For if God didn't spare angels when they sinned, but cast them down to Tartarus, and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved to judgment; |
2nd-Peter 2:5 | And spared not the original world, but preserved Noe, the eighth person, the preacher of justice, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly. | and spared not [the] old world, but preserved Noe, [the] eighth, a preacher of righteousness, having brought in [the] flood upon [the] world of [the] ungodly; | and didn't spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood on the world of the ungodly; |
2nd-Peter 2:6 | And reducing the cities of the Sodomites, and of the Gomorrhites, into ashes, condemned them to be overthrown, making them an example to those that should after act wickedly. | and having reduced [the] cities of Sodom and Gomorrha to ashes, condemned [them] with an overthrow, setting [them as] an example to those that should [afterwards] live an ungodly life; | and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly; |
2nd-Peter 2:7 | And delivered just Lot, oppressed by the injustice and lewd conversation of the wicked. | and saved righteous Lot, distressed with the abandoned conversation of the godless, | and delivered righteous Lot, very distressed by the lustful life of the wicked |
2nd-Peter 2:8 | For in sight and hearing he was just: dwelling among them, who from day to day vexed the just soul with unjust works. | (for the righteous man through seeing and hearing, dwelling among them, tormented [his] righteous soul day after day with [their] lawless works,) | (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, tormented his righteous soul from day to day with lawless deeds): |
2nd-Peter 2:9 | The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly from temptation, but to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be tormented. | [the] Lord knows [how] to deliver the godly out of trial, and to keep [the] unjust to [the] day of judgment [to be] punished; | the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment to the day of judgment; |
2nd-Peter 2:10 | And especially them who walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government, audacious, self willed, they fear not to bring in sects, blaspheming. | and specially those who walk after the flesh in [the] lust of uncleanness, and despise lordship. Bold [are they], self-willed; they do not fear speaking injuriously of dignities: | but chiefly those who walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries; |
2nd-Peter 2:11 | Whereas angels who are greater in strength and power, bring not against themselves a railing judgment. | when angels, who are greater in might and power, do not bring against them, before the Lord, an injurious charge. | whereas angels, though greater in might and power, don't bring a railing judgment against them before the Lord. |
2nd-Peter 2:12 | But these men, as irrational beasts, naturally tending to the snare and to destruction, blaspheming those things which they know not, shall perish in their corruption, | But these, as natural animals without reason, made to be caught and destroyed, speaking injuriously in things they are ignorant of, shall also perish in their own corruption, | But these, as creatures without reason, born mere animals to be taken and destroyed, speaking evil in matters about which they are ignorant, will in their destroying surely be destroyed, |
2nd-Peter 2:13 | Receiving the reward of their injustice, counting for a pleasure the delights of a day: stains and spots, sporting themselves to excess, rioting in their feasts with you: | receiving [the] reward of unrighteousness; accounting ephemeral indulgence pleasure; spots and blemishes, rioting in their own deceits, feasting with you; | receiving the wages of unrighteousness; people who count it pleasure to revel in the day-time, spots and blemishes, reveling in their deceit while they feast with you; |
2nd-Peter 2:14 | Having eyes full of adultery and of sin that ceaseth not: alluring unstable souls, having their heart exercised with covetousness, children of malediction: | having eyes full of adultery, and that cease not from sin, alluring unestablished souls; having a heart practised in covetousness, children of curse; | having eyes full of adultery, and who can't cease from sin; enticing unsettled souls; having a heart trained in greed; children of cursing; |
2nd-Peter 2:15 | Leaving the right way they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam of Bosor, who loved the wages of iniquity, | having left [the] straight way they have gone astray, having followed in the path of Balaam [the son] of Bosor, who loved [the] reward of unrighteousness; | forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of wrong-doing; |
2nd-Peter 2:16 | But had a check of his madness, the dumb beast used to the yoke, which speaking with man's voice, forbade the folly of the prophet. | but had reproof of his own wickedness [the] dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the folly of the prophet. | but he was rebuked for his own disobedience. A mute donkey spoke with man's voice and stopped the madness of the prophet. |
2nd-Peter 2:17 | These are fountains without water, and clouds tossed with whirlwinds, to whom the mist of darkness is reserved. | These are springs without water, and mists driven by storm, to whom the gloom of darkness is reserved [for ever]. | These are wells without water, clouds driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved forever. |
2nd-Peter 2:18 | For, speaking proud words of vanity, they allure by the desires of fleshly riotousness, those who for a little while escape, such as converse in error: | For [while] speaking great highflown words of vanity, they allure with [the] lusts of [the] flesh, by dissoluteness, those who have just fled those who walk in error, | For, uttering great swelling words of emptiness, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by licentiousness, those who are indeed escaping from those who live in error; |
2nd-Peter 2:19 | Promising them liberty, whereas they themselves are the slaves of corruption. For by whom a man is overcome, of the same also he is the slave. | promising them liberty, while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a man is subdued, by him is he also brought into slavery. | promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for by whom a man is overcome, by the same is he also brought into bondage. |
2nd-Peter 2:20 | For if, flying from the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they be again entangled in them and overcome: their latter state is become unto them worse than the former. | For if after having escaped the pollutions of the world through [the] knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, again entangled, they are subdued by these, their last state is worse than the first. | For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state has become worse with them than the first. |
2nd-Peter 2:21 | For it had been better for them not to have known the way of justice, than after they have known it, to turn back from that holy commandment which was delivered to them. | For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known [it] to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. | For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. |
2nd-Peter 2:22 | For, that of the true proverb has happened to them: The dog is returned to his vomit: and, The sow that was washed, to her wallowing in the mire. | But that [word] of the true proverb has happened to them: [The] dog [has] turned back to his own vomit; and, [The] washed sow to [her] rolling in mud. | But it has happened to them according to the true proverb, "The dog turns to his own vomit again," and "the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire." |
