Luke 3:8 | Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of penance; and do not begin to say, We have Abraham for our father. Luke 3:9 | For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn't bring forth good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire." |
Luke 3:10 | And the people asked him, saying: What then shall we do? | And the crowds asked him saying, What should we do then? | The multitudes asked him, "What then must we do?" |
Luke 3:11 | And he answering, said to them: He that hath two coats, let him give to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do in like manner. | And he answering says to them, He that has two body-coats, let him give to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise. | He answered them, "He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise." |
Luke 3:12 | And the publicans also came to be baptized, and said to him: Master, what shall we do? | And tax-gatherers came also to be baptised, and they said to him, Teacher, what should we do? | Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what must we do?" |
Luke 3:13 | But he said to them: Do nothing more than that which is appointed you. | And he said to them, Take no more [money] than what is appointed to you. | He said to them, "Extort no more than that which is appointed you." |
Luke 3:14 | And the soldiers also asked him, saying: And what shall we do? And he said to them: Do violence to no man; neither calumniate any man; and be content with your pay. | And persons engaged in military service also asked him saying, And we, what should we do? And he said to them, Oppress no one, nor accuse falsely, and be satisfied with your pay. | Soldiers also asked him, saying, "What about us? What must we do?" He said to them, "Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages." |
Luke 3:15 | And as the people were of opinion, and all were thinking in their hearts of John, that perhaps he might be the Christ; | But as the people were in expectation, and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John whether *he* might be the Christ, | As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ, |
Luke 3:16 | John answered, saying unto all: I indeed baptize you with water; but there shall come one mightier that I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to loose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: | John answered all, saying, *I* indeed baptise you with water, but the mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not fit to unloose; *he* shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire; | John answered them all, "I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen.
