John 5:1After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
John 5:2Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. Now in Jerusalem near the sheep-market there is a public bath which in Hebrew is named Beth-zatha. It has five doorways.
John 5:3In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered; waiting for the moving of the water. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. In these doorways there were a great number of people with different diseases: some unable to see, some without the power of walking, some with wasted bodies.
John 5:4And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water, was made whole, of whatsoever infirmity he lay under. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. []
John 5:5And there was a certain man there, that had been eight and thirty years under his infirmity. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.
John 5:6Him when Jesus had seen lying, and knew that he had been now a long time, he saith to him: Wilt thou be made whole? When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? When Jesus saw him there on the floor it was clear to him that he had been now a long time in that condition, and so he said to the man, Is it your desire to get well?
John 5:7The infirm man answered him: Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pond. For whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me.The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. The ill man said in answer, Sir, I have nobody to put me into the bath when the water is moving; and while I am on the way down some other person gets in before me.
John 5:8Jesus saith to him: Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. Jesus said to him, Get up, take your bed and go.
John 5:9And immediately the man was made whole: and he took up his bed, and walked. And it was the sabbath that day.And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. And the man became well straight away, and took up his bed and went. Now that day was the Sabbath.
John 5:10The Jews therefore said to him that was healed: It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. So the Jews said to the man who had been made well, It is the Sabbath; and it is against the law for you to take up your bed.
John 5:11He answered them: He that made me whole, he said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk.He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. He said to them, But he who made me well, said to me, Take up your bed and go.
John 5:12They asked him therefore: Who is that man who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? Then they put to him the question: Who is the man who said to you, Take it up and go?
John 5:13But he who was healed, knew not who it was; for Jesus went aside from the multitude standing in the place. And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. Now he who had been made well had no knowledge who it was, Jesus having gone away because of the number of people who were in that place.
John 5:14Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee.Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. After a time Jesus came across him in the Temple and said to him, See, you are well and strong; do no more sin for fear a worse thing comes to you.
John 5:15The man went his way, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had made him whole. The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. The man went away and said to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
John 5:16Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day. And for this reason the Jews were turned against Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
John 5:17But Jesus answered them: My Father worketh until now; and I work. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. But his answer was: My Father is still working even now, and so I am working.
John 5:18Hereupon therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he did not only break the sabbath, but also said God was his Father, making himself equal to God.Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. For this cause the Jews had an even greater desire to put Jesus to death, because not only did he not keep the Sabbath but he said God was his Father, so making himself equal with God.
John 5:19Then Jesus answered, and said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you, the Son cannot do any thing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doth, these the Son also doth in like manner. Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. So Jesus made answer and said, Truly I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything himself; he is able to do only what he sees the Father doing; whatever the Father does the Son does it in the same way.
John 5:20For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things which himself doth: and greater works than these will he shew him, that you may wonder. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For the Father has love for the Son and lets him see everything which he does: and he will let him see greater works than these so that you may be full of wonder.
John 5:21For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and giveth life: so the Son also giveth life to whom he will. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. In the same way, as the Father gives life to the dead, even so the Son gives life to those to whom he is pleased to give it.
John 5:22For neither doth the Father judge any man, but hath given all judgment to the Son.For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: The Father is not the judge of men, but he has given all decisions into the hands of the Son;
John 5:23That all men may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father, who hath sent him. That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. So that all men may give honour to the Son even as they give honour to the Father. He who gives no honour to the Son gives no honour to the Father who sent him.
John 5:24Amen, amen I say unto you, that he who heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath life everlasting; and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life.Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Truly I say to you, The man whose ears are open to my word and who has faith in him who sent me, has eternal life; he will not be judged, but has come from death into life.
John 5:25Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live.Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. Truly I say to you, The time is coming, it has even now come, when the voice of the Son of God will come to the ears of the dead, and those hearing it will have life.
John 5:26For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given the Son also to have life in himself:For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; For even as the Father has life in himself, so he has given to the Son to have life in himself.
John 5:27And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man.And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. And he has given him authority to be judge because he is the Son of man.
John 5:28Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh, wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God.Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, Do not be surprised at this: for the time is coming when his voice will come to all who are in the place of the dead,
John 5:29And they that have done good things, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment. And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. And they will come out; those who have done good, into the new life; and those who have done evil, to be judged.
John 5:30I cannot of myself do any thing. As I hear, so I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me.I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. Of myself I am unable to do anything: as the voice comes to me so I give a decision: and my decision is right because I have no desire to do what is pleasing to myself, but only what is pleasing to him who sent me.
John 5:31If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. If I gave witness about myself, my witness would not be true.
John 5:32There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. There is another who gives witness about me and I am certain that the witness he gives about me is true.
John 5:33You sent to John, and he gave testimony to the truth.Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. You sent to John and he gave true witness.
John 5:34But I receive not testimony from man: but I say these things, that you may be saved. But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. But I have no need of a man's witness: I only say these things so that you may have salvation.
John 5:35He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. He was a burning and shining light, and for a time you were ready to be happy in his light.
John 5:36But I have a greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to perfect; the works themselves, which I do, give testimony of me, that the Father hath sent me.But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. But the witness which I have is greater than that of John: the work which the Father has given me to do, the very work which I am now doing, is a witness that the Father has sent me.
John 5:37And the Father himself who hath sent me, hath given testimony of me: neither have you heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And the Father himself who sent me has given witness about me. Not one of you has ever given ear to his voice; his form you have not seen.
John 5:38And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him you believe not.And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. And you have not kept his word in your hearts, because you have not faith in him whom he has sent.
John 5:39Search the scriptures, for you think in them to have life everlasting; and the same are they that give testimony of me.Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. You make search in the holy Writings, in the belief that through them you get eternal life; and it is those Writings which give witness about me.
John 5:40And you will not come to me that you may have life. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. And still you have no desire to come to me so that you may have life.
John 5:41I receive glory not from men.I receive not honour from men. I do not take honour from men;
John 5:42But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you.But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. But I have knowledge of you that you have no love for God in your hearts.
John 5:43I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. I have come in my Father's name, and your hearts are not open to me. If another comes with no other authority but himself, you will give him your approval.
John 5:44How can you believe, who receive glory one from another: and the glory which is from God alone, you do not seek? How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? How is it possible for you to have faith while you take honour one from another and have no desire for the honour which comes from the only God?
John 5:45Think not that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one that accuseth you, Moses, in whom you trust.Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. Put out of your minds the thought that I will say things against you to the Father: the one who says things against you is Moses, on whom you put your hopes.
John 5:46For if you did believe Moses, you would perhaps believe me also; for he wrote of me.For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. If you had belief in Moses you would have belief in me; for his writings are about me.
John 5:47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words? But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? If you have no belief in his writings, how will you have belief in my words?
