Acts 24:1And after five days the high priest Ananias came down, with some of the ancients, and one Tertullus an orator, who went to the governor against Paul.And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul. Five days after this, Ananias the High Priest came down to Caesarea with a number of Elders and a pleader called Tertullus. They stated to the Governor the case against Paul.
Acts 24:2And Paul being called for, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying: Whereas through thee we live in much peace, and many things are rectified by thy providence,And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence, So Paul was sent for, and Tertullus began to impeach him as follows: "Indebted as we are," he said, "to you, most noble Felix, for the perfect peace which we enjoy, and for reforms which your wisdom has introduced to this nation,
Acts 24:3We accept it always and in all places, most excellent Felix, with all thanksgiving.We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness. in every instance and in every place we accept them with profound gratitude.
Acts 24:4But that I be no further tedious to thee, I desire thee of thy clemency to hear us in few words.Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words. But not to detain you too long I beg you in your forbearance to listen to a brief statement from us.
Acts 24:5We have found this to be a pestilent man, and raising seditions among all the Jews throughout the world, and author of the sedition of the sect of the Nazarenes.For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: For we have found this man Paul a source of mischief and a disturber of the peace among all the Jews throughout the Empire, and a ringleader in the heresy of the Nazarenes.
Acts 24:6Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom, we having apprehended, would also have judged according to our law.Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law. He even attempted to profane the Temple, but we arrested him.
Acts 24:7But Lysias the tribune coming upon us, with great violence took him away out of our hands;But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands, []
Acts 24:8Commanding his accusers to come to thee: of whom thou mayest thyself, by examination, have knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him.Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him. You, however, by examining him, will yourself be able to learn the truth as to all this which we allege against him."
Acts 24:9And the Jews also added, and said that these things were so.And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so. The Jews also joined in the charge, maintaining that these were facts.
Acts 24:10Then Paul answered, (the governor making a sign to him to speak:) Knowing that for many years thou hast been judge over this nation, I will with good courage answer for myself.Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself: Then, at a sign from the Governor, Paul answered, "Knowing, Sir, that for many years you have administered justice to this nation, I cheerfully make my defence.
Acts 24:11For thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days, since I went up to adore in Jerusalem:Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship. For you have it in your power to ascertain that it is not more than twelve days ago that I went up to worship in Jerusalem;
Acts 24:12And neither in the temple did they find me disputing with any man, or causing any concourse of the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city: and that neither in the Temple nor in the synagogues, nor anywhere in the city, did they find me disputing with any opponent or collecting a crowd about me.
Acts 24:13Neither can they prove unto thee the things whereof they now accuse me.Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me. Nor can they prove the charges which they are now bringing against me.
Acts 24:14But this I confess to thee, that according to the way, which they call a heresy, so do I serve the Father and my God, believing all things which are written in the law and the prophets:But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets: But this I confess to you that in the way which they style a heresy, I worship the God of our forefathers, believing everything that is taught in the Law or is written in the Prophets,
Acts 24:15Having hope in God, which these also themselves look for, that there shall be a resurrection of the just and unjust.And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. and having a hope directed towards God, which my accusers themselves also entertain, that before long there will be a resurrection both of the righteous and the unrighteous.
Acts 24:16And herein do I endeavour to have always a conscience without offence toward God, and towards men.And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men. This too is my own earnest endeavour always to have a clear conscience in relation to God and man.
Acts 24:17Now after many years, I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings, and vows.Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings. "Now after an interval of several years I came to bring alms to my nation, and to offer sacrifices.
Acts 24:18In which I was found purified in the temple: neither with multitude, nor with tumult.Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult. While I was busy about these, they found me in the Temple purified, with no crowd around me and no uproar; but there were certain Jews from the province of Asia.
Acts 24:19But certain Jews of Asia, who ought to be present before thee, and to accuse, if they had any thing against me:Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me. They ought to have been here before you, and to have been my prosecutors, if they have any charge to bring against me.
Acts 24:20Or let these men themselves say, if they found in me any iniquity, when standing before the council,Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council, Or let these men themselves say what misdemeanour they found me guilty of when I stood before the Sanhedrin,
Acts 24:21Except it be for this one voice only that I cried, standing among them, Concerning the resurrection of the dead am I judged this day by you.Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day. unless it was in that one expression which I made use of when I shouted out as I stood among them, "`The resurrection of the dead is the thing about which I am on my trial before you to-day.'"
Acts 24:22And Felix put them off, having most certain knowledge of this way, saying: When Lysias the tribune shall come down, I will hear you.And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter. At this point Felix, who was fairly well informed about the new faith, adjourned the trial, saying to the Jews, "When the Tribune Lysias comes down, I will enter carefully into the matter."
Acts 24:23And he commanded a centurion to keep him, and that he should be easy, and that he should not prohibit any of his friends to minister unto him.And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him. And he gave orders to the Captain that Paul was to be kept in custody, but be treated with indulgence, and that his personal friends were not to be prevented from showing him kindness.
Acts 24:24And after some days, Felix, coming with Drusilla his wife, who was a Jew, sent for Paul, and heard of him the faith, that is in Christ Jesus.And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. Not long after this, Felix came with Drusilla his wife, a Jewess, and sending for Paul, listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus.
Acts 24:25And as he treated of justice, and chastity, and of the judgment to come, Felix being terrified, answered: For this time, go thy way: but when I have a convenient time, I will send for thee.And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee. But when he dealt with the subjects of justice, self-control, and the judgement which was soon to come, Felix became alarmed and said, "For the present leave me, and when I can find a convenient opportunity I will send for you."
Acts 24:26Hoping also withal, that money should be given him by Paul; for which cause also oftentimes sending for him, he spoke with him.He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him. At the same time he hoped that Paul would give him money; and for this reason he sent for him the oftener to converse with him.
Acts 24:27But when two years were ended, Felix had for successor Portius Festus. And Felix being willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound. But after the lapse of fully two years Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and being desirous of gratifying the Jews, Felix left Paul still in prison.
