Galatians 4:1 | Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; | Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; | Now I say that so long as an heir is a child, he in no respect differs from a slave, although he is the owner of everything, |
Galatians 4:2 | But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed by the father: | But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. | but he is under the control of guardians and trustees until the time his father has appointed. |
Galatians 4:3 | So we also, when we were children, were serving under the elements of the world. | Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: | So we also, when spiritually we were children, were subject to the world's rudimentary notions, and were enslaved. |
Galatians 4:4 | But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent his Son, made of a woman, made under the law: | But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, | But, when the time was fully come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born subject to Law, |
Galatians 4:5 | That he might redeem them who were under the law: that we might receive the adoption of sons. | To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. | in order to purchase the freedom of all who were subject to Law, so that we might receive recognition as sons. |
Galatians 4:6 | And because you are sons, God hath sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying: Abba, Father. | And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. | And because you are sons, God has sent out the Spirit of His Son to enter your hearts and cry "Abba! our Father!" |
Galatians 4:7 | Therefore now he is not a servant, but a son. And if a son, an heir also through God. | Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. | Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir also through God's own act. |
Galatians 4:8 | But then indeed, not knowing God, you served them, who, by nature, are not gods. | Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods. | But at one time, you Gentiles, having no knowledge of God, were slaves to gods which in reality do not exist. |
Galatians 4:9 | But now, after that you have known God, or rather are known by God: how turn you again to the weak and needy elements, which you desire to serve again? | But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? | Now, however, having come to know God or rather to be known by Him how is it you are again turning back to weak and worthless rudimentary notions to which you are once more willing to be enslaved? |
Galatians 4:10 | You observe days, and months, and times, and years. | Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. | You scrupulously observe days and months, special seasons, and years. |
Galatians 4:11 | I am afraid of you, lest perhaps I have laboured in vain among you. | I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain. | I am alarmed about you, and am afraid that I have perhaps bestowed labour upon you to no purpose. |
Galatians 4:12 | Be ye as I, because I also am as you: brethren, I beseech you: you have not injured me at all. | Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all. | Brethren, become as I am, I beseech you; for I have also become like you. In no respect did you behave badly to me. |
Galatians 4:13 | And you know, how through infirmity of the flesh, I preached the gospel to you heretofore: and your temptation in my flesh, | Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first. | And you know that in those early days it was on account of bodily infirmity that I proclaimed the Good News to you, |
Galatians 4:14 | You despised not, nor rejected: but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. | And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. | and yet the bodily infirmity which was such a trial to you, you did not regard with contempt or loathing, but you received me as if I had been an angel of God or Christ Jesus Himself! |
Galatians 4:15 | Where is then your blessedness? For I bear you witness, that, if it could be done, you would have plucked out your own eyes, and would have given them to me. | Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me. | I ask you, then, what has become of your self-congratulations? For I bear you witness that had it been possible you would have torn out your own eyes and have given them to me. |
Galatians 4:16 | Am I then become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? | Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? | Can it be that I have become your enemy through speaking the truth to you? |
Galatians 4:17 | They are zealous in your regard not well: but they would exclude you, that you might be zealous for them. | They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them. | These men pay court to you, but not with honourable motives. They want to exclude you, so that you may pay court to them. |
Galatians 4:18 | But be zealous for that which is good in a good thing always: and not only when I am present with you. | But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you. | It is always an honourable thing to be courted in an honourable cause; always, and not only when I am with you, my children |
Galatians 4:19 | My little children, of whom I am in labour again, until Christ be formed in you. | My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you, | you for whom I am again, as it were, undergoing the pains of childbirth, until Christ is fully formed within you. |
Galatians 4:20 | And I would willingly be present with you now, and change my voice: because I am ashamed for you. | I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you. | Would that I were with you and could change my tone, for I am perplexed about you. |
Galatians 4:21 | Tell me, you that desire to be under the law, have you not read the law? | Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? | Tell me you who want to continue to be subject to Law will you not listen to the Law? |
Galatians 4:22 | For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, and the other by a free woman. | For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. | For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave-girl and one by the free woman. |
Galatians 4:23 | But he who was of the bondwoman, was born according to the flesh: but he of the free woman, was by promise. | But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. | But we see that the child of the slave-girl was born in the common course of nature; but the child of the free woman in fulfilment of the promise. |
Galatians 4:24 | Which things are said by an allegory. For these are the two testaments. The one from mount Sina, engendering unto bondage; which is Agar: | Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. | All this is allegorical; for the women represent two Covenants. One has its origin on Mount Sinai, and bears children destined for slavery. |
Galatians 4:25 | For Sina is a mountain in Arabia, which hath affinity to that Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. | For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. | This is Hagar; for the name Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, which is in bondage together with her children. |
Galatians 4:26 | But that Jerusalem, which is above, is free: which is our mother. | But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. | But the Jerusalem which is above is free, and *she* is *our* mother. |
Galatians 4:27 | For it is written: Rejoice, thou barren, that bearest not: break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for many are the children of the desolate, more than of her that hath a husband. | For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. | For it is written, "Rejoice, thou barren woman that bearest not, break forth into a joyful cry, thou that dost not travail with child. For the desolate woman has many children more indeed than she who has the husband." |
Galatians 4:28 | Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. | Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. | But you, brethren, like Isaac, are children born in fulfilment of a promise. |
Galatians 4:29 | But as then he, that was born according to the flesh, persecuted him that was after the spirit; so also it is now. | But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. | Yet just as, at that time, the child born in the common course of nature persecuted the one whose birth was due to the power of the Spirit, so it is now. |
Galatians 4:30 | But what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son; for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman. | Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. | But what says the Scripture? "Send away the slave-girl and her son, for never shall the slave-girl's son share the inheritance with the son of the free woman." |
Galatians 4:31 | So then, brethren, we are not the children of the bondwoman, but of the free: by the freedom wherewith Christ has made us free. | So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free. | Therefore, brethren, since we are not the children of a slave-girl, but of the free woman |
