John 8:1And Jesus went unto mount Olivet.Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
John 8:2And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him, and sitting down he taught them.And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself;
John 8:3And the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman taken in adultery: and they set her in the midst,And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him.
John 8:4And said to him: Master, this woman was even now taken in adultery. They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. "Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery.
John 8:5Now Moses in the law commanded us to stone such a one. But what sayest thou? Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do you say?"
John 8:6And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground. This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground.
John 8:7When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them, "Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her."
John 8:8And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground.
John 8:9But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone and the woman in the centre of the court.
John 8:10Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee? When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
John 8:11Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more. She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. "No one, Sir," she replied. "And *I* do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more."]
John 8:12Again therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying: I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Once more Jesus addressed them. "I am the Light of the world," He said; "the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life."
John 8:13The Pharisees therefore said to him: Thou givest testimony of thyself: thy testimony is not true. The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true. "You are giving testimony about yourself," said the Pharisees; "your testimony is not true."
John 8:14Jesus answered, and said to them: Although I give testimony of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go: but you know not whence I come, or whither I go.Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go. "Even if I am giving testimony about myself," replied Jesus, "my testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you know neither of these two things.
John 8:15You judge according to the flesh: I judge not any man.Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man. You judge according to appearances: I am judging no one.
John 8:16And if I do judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. And even if I do judge, my judgement is just; for I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me.
John 8:17And in your law it is written, that the testimony of two men is true.It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. In your own Law, too, it is written that the testimony of two men is true.
John 8:18I am one that give testimony of myself: and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me.I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. I am one giving testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me gives testimony about me."
John 8:19They said therefore to him: Where is thy Father? Jesus answered: Neither me do you know, nor my Father: if you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also. Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also. "Where is your Father?" they asked. "You know my Father as little as you know me." He replied; "if you knew me, you would know my Father also."
John 8:20These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come. These sayings He uttered in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple; yet no one arrested Him, because His time had not yet come.
John 8:21Again therefore Jesus said to them: I go, and you shall seek me, and you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come. Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. Again He said to them, "I am going away. Then you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come."
John 8:22The Jews therefore said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Whither I go, you cannot come? Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come. The Jews began to ask one another, "Is he going to kill himself, do you think, that he says, `Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come'?"
John 8:23And he said to them: You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world. And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. "You," He continued, "are from below, I am from above: you are of this present world, I am not of this present world.
John 8:24Therefore I said to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin.I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. That is why I told you that you will die in your sins; for, unless you believe that I am He, that is what will happen."
John 8:25They said therefore to him: Who art thou? Jesus said to them: The beginning, who also speak unto you. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning. "You who are you?" they asked. "How is it that I am speaking to you at all?" replied Jesus.
John 8:26Many things I have to speak and to judge of you. But he that sent me, is true: and the things I have heard of him, these same I speak in the world.I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him. "Many things I have to speak and to judge concerning you. But He who sent me is true, and the things which I have heard from Him are those which I have come into the world to speak."
John 8:27And they understood not, that he called God his Father. They understood not that he spake to them of the Father. They did not perceive that He was speaking to them of the Father.
John 8:28Jesus therefore said to them: When you shall have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know, that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father hath taught me, these things I speak:Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. So Jesus added, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. Of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, so I speak.
John 8:29And he that sent me, is with me, and he hath not left me alone: for I do always the things that please him.And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. And He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone: for I do always what is pleasing to Him."
John 8:30When he spoke these things, many believed in him.As he spake these words, many believed on him. As He thus spoke, many became believers in Him.
John 8:31Then Jesus said to those Jews, who believed him: If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed.Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; Jesus therefore said to those of the Jews who had now believed in Him, "As for you, if you hold fast to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples;
John 8:32And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. and you shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free."
John 8:33They answered him: We are the seed of Abraham, and we have never been slaves to any man: how sayest thou: you shall be free? They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? "We are descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and have never at any time been in slavery to any one. What do those words of yours mean, `You shall become free'?"
John 8:34Jesus answered them: Amen, amen I say unto you: that whosoever committeth sin, is the servant of sin.Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin.
John 8:35Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever; but the son abideth for ever. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. Now a slave does not remain permanently in his master's house, but a son does.
John 8:36If therefore the son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:37I know that you are the children of Abraham: but you seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. You are descendants of Abraham, I know; but you want to kill me, because my teaching gains no ground within you.
John 8:38I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do the things that you have seen with your father.I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. The words I speak are those I have learnt in the presence of the Father. Therefore you also should do what you have heard from your father."
John 8:39They answered, and said to him: Abraham is our father. Jesus saith to them: If you be the children of Abraham, do the works of Abraham. They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham. "Our father is Abraham," they said. "If you were Abraham's children," replied Jesus, "it is Abraham's deeds that you would be doing.
John 8:40But now you seek to kill me, a man who have spoken the truth to you, which I have heard of God. This Abraham did not.But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. But, in fact, you are longing to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I have heard from God. Abraham did not do that.
John 8:41You do the works of your father. They said therefore to him: We are not born of fornication: we have one Father, even God.Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. You are doing the deeds of your father." "We," they replied, "are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, namely God."
John 8:42Jesus therefore said to them: If God were your Father, you would indeed love me. For from God I proceeded, and came; for I came not of myself, but he sent me:Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. "If God were your Father," said Jesus, "you would love me; for it is from God that I came and I am now here. I have not come of myself, but *He* sent me.
John 8:43Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. How is it you do not understand me when I speak? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my words.
John 8:44You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he stood not in the truth; because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. The father whose sons you are is the Devil; and you desire to do what gives him pleasure. *He* was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth for there is no truth in him. Whenever he utters his lie, he utters it out of his own store; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.
John 8:45But if I say the truth, you believe me not.And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.
John 8:46Which of you shall convince me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me?Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? Which of *you* convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?
John 8:47He that is of God, heareth the words of God. Therefore you hear them not, because you are not of God.He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. He who is a child of God listens to God's words. You do not listen to them: and why? It is because you are not God's children."
John 8:48The Jews therefore answered, and said to him: Do not we say well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? "Are we not right," answered the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?"
John 8:49Jesus answered: I have not a devil: but I honour my Father, and you have dishonoured me.Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me. "I am not possessed by a demon," replied Jesus. "On the contrary I honour my Father, and you dishonour me.
John 8:50But I seek not my own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. I, however, am not aiming at glory for myself: there is One who aims at glory for me and who judges.
John 8:51Amen, amen I say to you: If any man keep my word, he shall not see death for ever.Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed my teaching he shall in no case ever see death."
John 8:52The Jews therefore said: Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest: If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death for ever. Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. "Now," exclaimed the Jews, "we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the Prophets, and yet *you* say, `If any one shall have obeyed my teaching, he shall in no case ever taste death.'
John 8:53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead. Whom dost thou make thyself?Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself? Are you really greater than our forefather Abraham? For he died. And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"
John 8:54Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom you say that he is your God.Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: "Were I to glorify myself," answered Jesus, "I should have no real glory. There is One who glorifies me namely my Father, who you say is your God.
John 8:55And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I shall say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar. But I do know him, and do keep his word.Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. You do not know Him, but I know Him perfectly; and were I to deny my knowledge of Him, I should resemble you, and be a liar. On the contrary I do know Him, and I obey His commands.
John 8:56Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day: he saw it, and was glad.Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Abraham your forefather exulted in the hope of seeing my day: and he saw it, and was glad."
John 8:57The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? "You are not yet fifty years old," cried the Jews, "and have you seen Abraham?"
John 8:58Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. "In most solemn truth," answered Jesus, "I tell you that before Abraham came into existence, I am."
John 8:59They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple.
