2nd-Peter 3:1 | Behold this second epistle I write to you, my dearly beloved, in which I stir up by way of admonition your sincere mind: | This second epistle, beloved, I now write to you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: | This letter which I am now writing to you, dear friends, is my second letter. In both my letters I seek to revive in your honest minds the memory of certain things, |
2nd-Peter 3:2 | That you may be mindful of those words which I told you before from the holy prophets, and of your apostles, of the precepts of the Lord and Saviour. | That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior: | so that you may recall the words spoken long ago by the holy Prophets, and the commandments of our Lord and Saviour given you through your Apostles. |
2nd-Peter 3:3 | Knowing this first, that in the last days there shall come deceitful scoffers, walking after their own lusts, | Knowing this first, that there will come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, | But, above all, remember that, in the last days, men will come who make a mock at everything men governed only by their own passions, |
2nd-Peter 3:4 | Saying: Where is his promise or his coming? for since the time that the fathers slept, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. | And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. | and, asking, "What has become of His promised Return? For from the time our forefathers fell asleep all things continue as they have been ever since the creation of the world." |
2nd-Peter 3:5 | For this they are wilfully ignorant of, that the heavens were before, and the earth out of water, and through water, consisting by the word of God. | For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: | For they are wilfully blind to the fact that there were heavens which existed of old, and an earth, the latter arising out of water and extending continuously through water, by the command of God; |
2nd-Peter 3:6 | Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. | By which the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: | and that, by means of these, the then existing race of men was overwhelmed with water and perished. |
2nd-Peter 3:7 | But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of the ungodly men. | But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved to fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. | But the present heavens and the present earth are, by the command of the same God, kept stored up, reserved for fire in preparation for a day of judgement and of destruction for the ungodly. |
2nd-Peter 3:8 | But of this one thing be not ignorant, my beloved, that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. | But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. | But there is one thing, dear friends, which you must not forget. With the Lord one day resembles a thousand years and a thousand years resemble one day. |
2nd-Peter 3:9 | The Lord delayeth not his promise, as some imagine, but dealeth patiently for your sake, not willing that any should perish, but that all should return to penance. | The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. | The Lord is not slow in fulfilling His promise, in the sense in which some men speak of slowness. But He bears patiently with you, His desire being that no one should perish but that all should come to repentance. |
2nd-Peter 3:10 | But the day of the Lord shall come as a thief, in which the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and the elements shall be melted with heat, and the earth and the works which are in it, shall be burnt up. | But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein will be burned up. | The day of the Lord will come like a thief it will be a day on which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, the elements be destroyed in the fierce heat, and the earth and all the works of man be utterly burnt up. |
2nd-Peter 3:11 | Seeing then that all these things are to be dissolved, what manner of people ought you to be in holy conversation and godliness? | Seeing then that all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy deportment and godliness, | Since all these things are thus pre-destined to dissolution, what sort of men ought you to be found to be in all holy living and godly conduct, |
2nd-Peter 3:12 | Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of the Lord, by which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with the burning heat? | Looking for and hasting to the coming of the day of God, in which the heavens being on fire will be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? | eagerly looking forward to the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens, all ablaze, will be destroyed, and the elements will melt in the fierce heat? |
2nd-Peter 3:13 | But we look for new heavens and a new earth according to his promises, in which justice dwelleth. | Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, in which dwelleth righteousness. | But in accordance with His promise we are expecting new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness will dwell. |
2nd-Peter 3:14 | Wherefore, dearly beloved, waiting for these things, be diligent that you may be found before him unspotted and blameless in peace. | Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found by him in peace, without spot, and blameless. | Therefore, dear friends, since you have these expectations, earnestly seek to be found in His presence, free from blemish or reproach, in peace. |
2nd-Peter 3:15 | And account the longsuffering of our Lord, salvation; as also our most dear brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, hath written to you: | And account that the long-suffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, hath written to you; | And always regard the patient forbearance of our Lord as salvation, as our dear brother Paul also has written to you in virtue of the wisdom granted to him. |
2nd-Peter 3:16 | As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are certain things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. | As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. | That is what he says in all his letters, when speaking in them of these things. In those letters there are some statements hard to understand, which ill-taught and unprincipled people pervert, just as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own ruin. |
2nd-Peter 3:17 | You therefore, brethren, knowing these things before, take heed, lest being led aside by the error of the unwise, you fall from your own steadfastness. | Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. | You, therefore, dear friends, having been warned beforehand, must continually be on your guard so as not to be led astray by the false teaching of immoral men nor fall from your own stedfastness. |
2nd-Peter 3:18 | But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and unto the day of eternity. Amen. | But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. | But be always growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be all glory, both now and to the day of Eternity! |
