Luke 20:1 | And it came to pass, that on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes, with the ancients, met together, | On one of those days while He was teaching the people in the Temple and proclaiming the Good News, the High Priests came upon Him, and the Scribes, | And it came to pass, on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, there came upon him the chief priests and the scribes with the elders; |
Luke 20:2 | And spoke to him, saying: Tell us, by what authority dost thou these things? or, Who is he that hath given thee this authority? | together with the Elders, and they asked Him, "Tell us, By what authority are you doing these things? And who is it that gave you this authority?" | and they spake, saying unto him, Tell us: By what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? |
Luke 20:3 | And Jesus answering, said to them: I will also ask you one thing. Answer me: | "I also will put a question to you, "He said; | And he answered and said unto them, I also will ask you a question; and tell me: |
Luke 20:4 | The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? | "was John's baptism of Heavenly or of human origin?" | The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? |
Luke 20:5 | But they thought within themselves, saying: If we shall say, From heaven: he will say: Why then did you not believe him? | So they debated the matter with one another. "If we say `Heavenly,'" they argued, "he will say, `Why did you not believe him?' | And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why did ye not believe him? |
Luke 20:6 | But if we say, Of men, the whole people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet. | And if we say, `human,' the people will all stone us; for they are thoroughly convinced that John was a Prophet." | But if we shall say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet. |
Luke 20:7 | And they answered, that they knew not whence it was. | And they answered that they did not know the origin of it. | And they answered, that they knew not whence [it was]. |
Luke 20:8 | And Jesus said to them: Neither do I tell thee by what authority I do these things. | "Nor will I tell you," said Jesus, "by what authority I do these things." | And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. |
Luke 20:9 | And he began to speak to the people this parable: A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen: and he was abroad for a long time. | Then He proceeded to speak a parable to the people. "There was a man," He said, "who planted a vineyard, let it out to vine-dressers, and went abroad for a considerable time. | And he began to speak unto the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country for a long time. |
Luke 20:10 | And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard. Who, beating him, sent him away empty. | At vintage-time he sent a servant to the vine-dressers, for them to give him a share of the crop; but the vine-dressers beat him cruelly and sent him away empty-handed. | And at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. |
Luke 20:11 | And again he sent another servant. But they beat him also, and treating him reproachfully, sent him away empty. | Then he sent a second servant; and him too they beat and ill treated and sent away empty-handed. | And he sent yet another servant: and him also they beat, and handled him shamefully, and sent him away empty. |
Luke 20:12 | And again he sent the third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. | Then again he sent a third; and this one also they wounded and drove away. | And he sent yet a third: and him also they wounded, and cast him forth. |
Luke 20:13 | Then the lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be, when they see him, they will reverence him. | Then the owner of the vineyard said, "`What am I to do? I will send my son my dearly-loved son: they will probably respect him.' | And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him. |
Luke 20:14 | Whom when the husbandmen saw, they thought within themselves, saying: This is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. | "But when the vine-dressers saw him, they discussed the matter with one another, and said, "`This is the heir: let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.' | But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned one with another, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. |
Luke 20:15 | So casting him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them? | "So they turned him out of the vineyard and murdered him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? | And they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do unto them? |
Luke 20:16 | He will come, and will destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. Which they hearing, said to him: God forbid. | He will come and put these vine-dressers to death, and give the vineyard to others." "God forbid!" exclaimed the hearers. | He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. |
Luke 20:17 | But he looking on them, said: What is this then that is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? | He looked at them and said, "What then does that mean which is written, "`The Stone which the builders rejected has been made the cornerstone'? | But he looked upon them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner? |
Luke 20:18 | Whosoever shall fall upon that stone, shall be bruised: and upon whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. | Every one who falls on that stone will be severely hurt, but on whomsoever it falls, he will be utterly crushed." | Every one that falleth on that stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust. |
Luke 20:19 | And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him the same hour: but they feared the people, for they knew that he spoke this parable to them. | At this the Scribes and the High Priests wanted to lay hands on Him, then and there; only they were afraid of the people. For they saw that in this parable He had referred to them. | And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them. |
Luke 20:20 | And being upon the watch, they sent spies, who should feign themselves just, that they might take hold of him in his words, that they might deliver him up to the authority and power of the governor. | So, after impatiently watching their opportunity, they sent spies who were to act the part of good and honest men, that they might fasten on some expression of His, so as to hand Him over to the ruling power and the Governor's authority. | And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor. |
Luke 20:21 | And they asked him, saying: Master, we know that thou speakest and teachest rightly: and thou dost not respect any person, but teachest the way of God in truth. | So they put a question to Him. "Rabbi," they said, "we know that you say and teach what is right and that you make no distinctions between one man and another, but teach God's way truly. | And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person [of any], but of a truth teachest the way of God: |
Luke 20:22 | Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or no? | Is it allowable to pay a tax to Caesar, or not?" | Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? |
Luke 20:23 | But he considering their guile, said to them: Why tempt you me? | But He saw through their knavery and replied, | But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, |
Luke 20:24 | Shew me a penny. Whose image and inscription hath it? They answering, said to him, Caesar's. | "Show me a shilling; whose likeness and inscription does it bear?" "Caesar's," they said. | Show me a denarius. Whose image and superscription hath it? And they said, Caesar's. |
Luke 20:25 | And he said to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's: and to God the things that are God's. | "Pay therefore," He replied, "what is Caesar's to Caesar and what is God's to God." | And he said unto them, Then render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. |
Luke 20:26 | And they could not reprehend his word before the people: and wondering at his answer, they held their peace. | There was nothing here that they could lay hold of before the people, and marvelling at His answer they said no more. | And they were not able to take hold of the saying before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. |
Luke 20:27 | And there came to him some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, and they asked him, | Next some of the Sadducees came forward (who deny that there is a Resurrection), and they asked Him, | And there came to him certain of the Sadducees, they that say that there is no resurrection; |
Luke 20:28 | Saying: Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he leave no children, that his brother should take her to wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. | "Rabbi, Moses made it a law for us that if a man's brother should die, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up a family for his brother. | and they asked him, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote unto us, that if a man's brother die, having a wife, and he be childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. |
Luke 20:29 | There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children. | Now there were seven brothers. The first of them took a wife and died childless. | There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died childless; |
Luke 20:30 | And the next took her to wife, and he also died childless. | The second and the third also took her; | and the second: |
Luke 20:31 | And the third took her. And in like manner all the seven, and they left no children, and died. | and all seven, having done the same, left no children when they died. | and the third took her; and likewise the seven also left no children, and died. |
Luke 20:32 | Last of all the woman died also. | Finally the woman also died. | Afterward the woman also died. |
Luke 20:33 | In the resurrection therefore, whose wife of them shall she be? For all the seven had her to wife. | The woman, then at the Resurrection whose wife shall she be? for they all seven married her." | In the resurrection therefore whose wife of them shall she be? for the seven had her to wife. |
Luke 20:34 | And Jesus said to them: The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: | "The men of this age," replied Jesus, "marry, and the women are given in marriage. | And Jesus said unto them, The sons of this world marry, and are given in marriage: |
Luke 20:35 | But they that shall be accounted worthy of that world, and of the resurrection from the dead, shall neither be married, nor take wives. | But as for those who shall have been deemed worthy to find a place in that other age and in the Resurrection from among the dead, the men do not marry and the women are not given in marriage. | but they that are accounted worthy to attain to that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: |
Luke 20:36 | Neither can they die any more: for they are equal to the angels, and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. | For indeed they cannot die again; they are like angels, and are sons of God through being sons of the Resurrection. | for neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. |
Luke 20:37 | Now that the dead rise again, Moses also shewed, at the bush, when he called the Lord, The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; | But that the dead rise to life even Moses clearly implies in the passage about the Bush, where he calls the Lord `The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' | But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in [the place concerning] the Bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. |
Luke 20:38 | For he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live to him. | He is not a God of dead, but of living men, for to Him are all living." | Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. |
Luke 20:39 | And some of the scribes answering, said to him: Master, thou hast said well. | Then some of the Scribes replied, "Rabbi, you have spoken well." | And certain of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well said. |
Luke 20:40 | And after that they durst not ask him any more questions. | From that time, however, no one ventured to challenge Him with a single question. | For they durst not any more ask him any question. |
Luke 20:41 | But he said to them: How say they that Christ is the son of David? | But He asked them, "How is it they say that the Christ is a son of David? | And he said unto them, How say they that the Christ is David's son? |
Luke 20:42 | And David himself saith in the book of Psalms: The Lord said to my Lord, sit thou on my right hand, | Why, David himself says in the Book of Psalms, "`The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand | For David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, |
Luke 20:43 | Till I make thy enemies thy footstool. | Until I have made thy foes a footstool under they feet.' | Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet. |
Luke 20:44 | David then calleth him Lord: and how is he his son? | "David himself therefore calls Him Lord, and how can He be his son?" | David therefore calleth him Lord, and how is he his son? |
Luke 20:45 | And in the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples: | Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to the disciples, | And in the hearing of all the people he said unto his disciples, |
Luke 20:46 | Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplace, and the first chairs in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts: | "Beware of the Scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and love to be bowed to in places of public resort and to occupy the best seats in the synagogues or at a dinner party; | Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief places at feasts; |
Luke 20:47 | Who devour the houses of widows, feigning long prayer. These shall receive greater damnation. | who swallow up the property of widows and mask their wickedness by making long prayers. They will be punished far more severely than others." | who devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater condemnation. |
