Matthew 26:1And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended all these words, he said to his disciples:When Jesus had ended all these discourses, He said to His disciples,And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these words, he said unto his disciples,
Matthew 26:2You know that after two days shall be the pasch, and the son of man shall be delivered up to be crucified:"You know that in two days' time the Passover comes. And the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified."Ye know that after two days the passover cometh, and the Son of man is delivered up to be crucified.
Matthew 26:3Then were gathered together the chief priests and ancients of the people into the court of the high priest, who was called Caiphas:Then the High Priests and Elders of the People assembled in the court of the palace of the High Priest Caiaphas,Then were gathered together the chief priests, and the elders of the people, unto the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas;
Matthew 26:4And they consulted together, that by subtilty they might apprehend Jesus, and put him to death.and consulted how to get Jesus into their power by stratagem and put Him to death.and they took counsel together that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him.
Matthew 26:5But they said: Not on the festival day, lest perhaps there should be a tumult among the people.But they said, "Not during the Festival, lest there be a riot among the people."But they said, Not during the feast, lest a tumult arise among people.
Matthew 26:6And when Jesus was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper,Now when Jesus was come to Bethany and was at the house of Simon the Leper,Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
Matthew 26:7There came to him a woman having an alabaster box of precious ointment, and poured it on his head as he was at table.a woman came to Him with a jar of very costly, sweet-scented ointment, which she poured over His head as He reclined at table.there came unto him a woman having an alabaster cruse of exceeding precious ointment, and she poured it upon his head, as he sat at meat.
Matthew 26:8And the disciples seeing it, had indignation, saying: To what purpose is this waste?"Why such waste?" indignantly exclaimed the disciples;But when the disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?
Matthew 26:9For this might have been sold for much, and given to the poor."for this might have been sold for a considerable sum, and the money given to the poor."For this [ointment] might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
Matthew 26:10And Jesus knowing it, said to them: Why do you trouble this woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.But Jesus heard it, and said to them, "Why are you vexing her? For she has done a most gracious act towards me.But Jesus perceiving it said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.
Matthew 26:11For the poor you have always with you: but me you have not always.The poor you always have with you, but me you have not always.For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
Matthew 26:12For she in pouring this ointment upon my body, hath done it for my burial.In pouring this ointment over me, her object was to prepare me for burial.For in that she poured this ointment upon my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.
Matthew 26:13Amen I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she hath done, shall be told for a memory of her.In solemn truth I tell you that wherever in the whole world this Good News shall be proclaimed, this deed of hers shall be spoken of in memory of her."Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which this woman hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
Matthew 26:14Then went one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, to the chief priests,At that time one of the Twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, went to the High PriestsThen one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
Matthew 26:15And said to them: What will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you? But they appointed him thirty pieces of silver.and said, "What are you willing to give me if I betray him to you?" So they weighed out to him thirty shekels,and said, What are ye willing to give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they weighed unto him thirty pieces of silver.
Matthew 26:16And from thenceforth he sought opportunity to betray him.and from that moment he was on the look out for an opportunity to betray Him.And from that time he sought opportunity to deliver him [unto them.]
Matthew 26:17And on the first day of the Azymes, the disciples came to Jesus, saying: Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the pasch?On the first day of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus with the question, "Where shall we make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"Now on the first [day] of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where wilt thou that we make ready for thee to eat the passover?
Matthew 26:18But Jesus said: Go ye into the city to a certain man, and say to him: the master saith, My time is near at hand, with thee I make the pasch with my disciples."Go into the city," He replied, "to a certain man, and tell him, `The Teacher says, My time is close at hand. It is at your house that I shall keep the Passover with my disciples.'"And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Teacher saith, My time is at hand; I keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.
Matthew 26:19And the disciples did as Jesus appointed to them, and they prepared the pasch.The disciples did as Jesus directed them, and got the Passover ready.And the disciples did as Jesus appointed them; and they made ready the passover.
Matthew 26:20But when it was evening, he sat down with his twelve disciples.When evening came, He was at table with the twelve disciples,Now when even was come, he was sitting at meat with the twelve disciples;
Matthew 26:21And whilst they were eating, he said: Amen I say to you, that one of you is about to betray me.and the meal was proceeding, when Jesus said, "In solemn truth I tell you that one of you will betray me."and as they were eating, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
Matthew 26:22And they being very much troubled, began every one to say: Is it I, Lord?Intensely grieved they began one after another to ask Him, "Can it be I, Master?"And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began to say unto him every one, Is it I, Lord?
Matthew 26:23But he answering, said: He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, he shall betray me."The one who has dipped his fingers in the bowl with me," He answered, "is the man who will betray me.And he answered and said, He that dipped his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.
Matthew 26:24The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man shall be betrayed: it were better for him, if that man had not been born.The Son of Man is indeed going as is written concerning Him; but alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It had been a happy thing for that man if he had never been born."The Son of man goeth, even as it is written of him: but woe unto that man through whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had not been born.
Matthew 26:25And Judas that betrayed him, answering, said: Is it I, Rabbi? He saith to him: Thou hast said it.Then Judas, the disciple who was betraying Him, asked, "Can it be I, Rabbi?" "It is you," He replied.And Judas, who betrayed him, answered and said, Is it I, Rabbi? He saith unto him, Thou hast said.
Matthew 26:26And whilst they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke: and gave to his disciples, and said: Take ye, and eat. This is my body.During the meal Jesus took a Passover biscuit, blessed it and broke it. He then gave it to the disciples, saying, "Take this and eat it: it is my body."And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it; and he gave to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
Matthew 26:27And taking the chalice, he gave thanks, and gave to them, saying: Drink ye all of this.And He took the cup and gave thanks, and gave it to them saying, "Drink from it, all of you;And he took a cup, and gave thanks, and gave to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
Matthew 26:28For this is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins.for this is my blood which is to be poured out for many for the remission of sins the blood which ratifies the Covenant.for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many unto remission of sins.
Matthew 26:29And I say to you, I will not drink from henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I shall drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father.I tell you that I will never again take the produce of the vine till that day when I shall drink the new wine with you in my Father's Kingdom."But I say unto you, I shall not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.
Matthew 26:30And a hymn being said, they went out unto mount Olivet.So they sang the hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.And when they had sung a hymn, they went out unto the mount of Olives.
Matthew 26:31Then Jesus said to them: All you shall be scandalized in me this night. For it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be dispersed.Then said Jesus, "This night all of you will stumble and fail in your fidelity to me; for it is written, `I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered in all directions.'Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended in me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.
Matthew 26:32But after I shall be risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.But after I have risen to life again I will go before you into Galilee."But after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.
Matthew 26:33And Peter answering, said to him: Although all shall be scandalized in thee, I will never be scandalized."All may stumble and fail," said Peter, "but I never will."But Peter answered and said unto him, If all shall be offended in thee, I will never be offended.
Matthew 26:34Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, that in this night before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice."In solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that this very night, before the cock crows, you will three times disown me."Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, that this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
Matthew 26:35Peter saith to him: Yea, though I should die with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner said all the disciples."Even if I must die with you," declared Peter, "I will never disown you." In like manner protested all the disciples.Peter saith unto him, Even if I must die with thee, [yet] will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.
Matthew 26:36Then Jesus came with them into a country place which is called Gethsemani; and he said to his disciples: Sit you here, till I go yonder and pray.Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane. And He said to the disciples, "Sit down here, whilst I go yonder and there pray."Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto his disciples, Sit ye here, while I go yonder and pray.
Matthew 26:37And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to grow sorrowful and to be sad.And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zabdi. Then He began to be full of anguish and distress,And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and sore troubled.
Matthew 26:38Then he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death: stay you here, and watch with me.and He said to them, "My soul is crushed with anguish to the very point of death; wait here, and keep awake with me."Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: abide ye here, and watch with me.
Matthew 26:39And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying, and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.Going forward a short distance He fell on His face and prayed. "My Father," He said, "if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou willest."And he went forward a little, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass away from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.
Matthew 26:40And he cometh to his disciples, and findeth them asleep, and he saith to Peter: What? Could you not watch one hour with me?Then He came to the disciples and found them asleep, and He said to Peter, "Alas, none of you could keep awake with me for even a single hour!And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
Matthew 26:41Watch ye, and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak.Keep awake, and pray that you may not enter into temptation: the spirit is right willing, but the body is frail."Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Matthew 26:42Again the second time, he went and prayed, saying: My Father, if this chalice may not pass away, but I must drink it, thy will be done.Again a second time He went away and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is impossible for this cup to pass without my drinking it, Thy will be done."Again a second time he went away, and prayed, saying, My Father, if this cannot pass away, except I drink it, thy will be done.
Matthew 26:43And he cometh again and findeth them sleeping: for their eyes were heavy.He came and again found them asleep, for they were very tired.And he came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
Matthew 26:44And leaving them, he went again: and he prayed the third time, saying the selfsame word.So He left them, and went away once more and prayed a third time, again using the same words.And he left them again, and went away, and prayed a third time, saying again the same words.
Matthew 26:45Then he cometh to his disciples, and saith to them: Sleep ye now and take your rest; behold the hour is at hand, and the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners.Then He came to the disciples and said, "Sleep on and rest. See, the moment is close at hand when the Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinful men.Then cometh he to the disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Matthew 26:46Rise, let us go: behold he is at hand that will betray me.Rouse yourselves. Let us be going. My betrayer is close at hand."Arise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that betrayeth me.
Matthew 26:47As he yet spoke, behold Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the ancients of the people.He had scarcely finished speaking when Judas came one of the Twelve accompanied by a great crowd of men armed with swords and bludgeons, sent by the High Priests and Elders of the People.And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priest and elders of the people.
Matthew 26:48And he that betrayed him, gave them a sign, saying: Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he, hold him fast.Now the betrayer had agreed upon a sign with them, to direct them. He had said, "The one whom I kiss is the man: lay hold of him."Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he: take him.
Matthew 26:49And forthwith coming to Jesus, he said: Hail, Rabbi. And he kissed him.So he went straight to Jesus and said, "Peace to you, Rabbi!" And he kissed Him eagerly.And straightway he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, Rabbi; and kissed him.
Matthew 26:50And Jesus said to him: Friend, whereto art thou come? Then they came up, and laid hands on Jesus, and held him."Friend," said Jesus, "carry out your intention." Then they came and laid their hands on Jesus and seized Him firmly.And Jesus said unto him, Friend, [do] that for which thou art come. Then they came and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
Matthew 26:51And behold one of them that were with Jesus, stretching forth his hand, drew out his sword: and striking the servant of the high priest, cut off his ear.But one of those with Jesus drew his sword and struck the High Priest's servant, cutting off his ear.And behold, one of them that were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and smote the servant of the high priest, and struck off his ear.
Matthew 26:52Then Jesus saith to him: Put up again thy sword into its place: for all that take the sword shall perish with the sword."Put back your sword again," said Jesus, "for all who draw the sword shall perish by the sword.Then saith Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into its place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
Matthew 26:53Thinkest thou that I cannot ask my Father, and he will give me presently more than twelve legions of angels?Or do you suppose I cannot entreat my Father and He would instantly send to my help more than twelve legions of angels?Or thinkest thou that I cannot beseech my Father, and he shall even now send me more than twelve legions of angels?
Matthew 26:54How then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that so it must be done?In that case how are the Scriptures to be fulfilled which declare that thus it must be?"How then should the scriptures be fulfilled that thus it must be?
Matthew 26:55In that same hour Jesus said to the multitudes: You are come out as it were to a robber with swords and clubs to apprehend me. I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you laid not hands on me.Then said Jesus to the crowds, "Have you come out as if to fight with a robber, with swords and bludgeons to apprehend me? Day after day I have been sitting teaching in the Temple, and you did not arrest me.In that hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a robber with swords and staves to seize me? I sat daily in the temple teaching, and ye took me not.
Matthew 26:56Now all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then the disciples all leaving him, fled.But all this has taken place in order that the writings of the Prophets may be fulfilled." At this point the disciples all left Him and fled.But all this is come to pass, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him, and fled.
Matthew 26:57But they holding Jesus led him to Caiphas the high priest, where the scribes and the ancients were assembled.But the officers who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the High Priest, at whose house the Scribes and the Elders had assembled.And they that had taken Jesus led him away to [the house of] Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together.
Matthew 26:58And Peter followed him afar off, even to the court of the high priest. And going in, he sat with the servants, that he might see the end.And Peter kept following Him at a distance, till he came even to the court of the High Priest's palace, where he entered and sat down among the officers to see the issue.But Peter followed him afar off, unto the court of the high priest, and entered in, and sat with the officers, to see the end.
Matthew 26:59And the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death:Meanwhile the High Priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking false testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death;Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death;
Matthew 26:60And they found not, whereas many false witnesses had come in. And last of all there came two false witnesses:but they could find none, although many false witnesses came forward. At length there came twoand they found it not, though many false witnesses came. But afterward came two,
Matthew 26:61And they said: This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and after three days to rebuild it.who testified, "This man said, `I am able to pull down the Sanctuary of God and three days afterwards to build a new one.'"and said, This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.
Matthew 26:62And the high priest rising up, said to him: Answerest thou nothing to the things which these witness against thee?Then the High Priest stood up and asked Him, "Have you no answer to make? What is it these men are saying in evidence against you?"And the high priest stood up, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
Matthew 26:63But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest said to him: I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us if thou be the Christ the Son of God.Jesus however remained silent. Again the High Priest addressed Him. "In the name of the ever-living God," he said, "I now put you on your oath. Tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God."But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou art the Christ, the Son of God.
Matthew 26:64Jesus saith to him: Thou hast said it. Nevertheless I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven."I am He," replied Jesus. "But I tell you that, later on, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Omnipotence, and coming on the clouds of the sky."Jesus said unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Henceforth ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.
Matthew 26:65Then the high priests rent his garments, saying: He hath blasphemed; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard the blasphemy:Then the High Priest tore his robes and exclaimed, "Impious language! What further need have we of witnesses! See, you have now heard the impiety.Then the high priest rent his garments, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy: what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard the blasphemy:
Matthew 26:66What think you? But they answering, said: He is guilty of death.What is your verdict?" "He deserves to die," they replied.what think ye? They answered and said, He is worthy of death.
Matthew 26:67Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him: and others struck his face with the palms of their hands,Then they spat in His face, and struck Him some with the fist, some with the open handThen did they spit in his face and buffet him: and some smote him with the palms of their hands,
Matthew 26:68Saying: Prophesy unto us, O Christ, who is he that struck thee?while they taunted Him, saying, "Christ, prove yourself a Prophet by telling us who it was that struck you."saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ: who is he that struck thee?
Matthew 26:69But Peter sat without in the court: and there came to him a servant maid, saying: Thou also wast with Jesus the Galilean.Peter meanwhile was sitting outside in the court of the palace, when one of the maidservants came over to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilaean."Now Peter was sitting without in the court: and a maid came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus the Galilaean.
Matthew 26:70But he denied before them all, saying: I know not what thou sayest.He denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you mean."But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.
Matthew 26:71And as he went out of the gate, another maid saw him, and she saith to them that were there: This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth.Soon afterwards he went out and stood in the gateway, when another girl saw him, and said, addressing the people there, "This man was with Jesus the Nazarene."And when he was gone out into the porch, another [maid] saw him, and saith unto them that were there, This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth.
Matthew 26:72And again he denied with an oath, I know not the man.Again he denied it with an oath. "I do not know the man," he said.And again he denied with an oath, I know not the man.
Matthew 26:73And after a little while they came that stood by, and said to Peter: Surely thou also art one of them; for even thy speech doth discover thee.A short time afterwards the people standing there came and said to Peter, "Certainly you too are one of them, for your brogue shows it."And after a little while they that stood by came and said to Peter, Of a truth thou also art [one] of them; for thy speech maketh thee known.
Matthew 26:74Then he began to curse and to swear that he knew not the man. And immediately the cock crew.Then with curses and oaths he declared, "I do not know the man." Immediately a cock crowed,Then began he to curse and to swear, I know not the man. And straightway the cock crew.
Matthew 26:75And Peter remembered the word of Jesus which he had said: Before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice. And going forth, he wept bitterly.and Peter recollected the words of Jesus, how He had said, "Before the cock crows you will three times disown me." And he went out and wept aloud, bitterly.And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.
