Romans 13:1 | Let every soul be subject to higher powers: for there is no power but from God: and those that are, are ordained of God. | Let every individual be obedient to those who rule over him; for no one is a ruler except by God's permission, and our present rulers have had their rank and power assigned to them by Him. | Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the [powers] that be are ordained of God. |
Romans 13:2 | Therefore he that resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God. And they that resist, purchase to themselves damnation. | Therefore the man who rebels against his ruler is resisting God's will; and those who thus resist will bring punishment upon themselves. | Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment. |
Romans 13:3 | For princes are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good: and thou shalt have praise from the same. | For judges and magistrates are to be feared not by right-doers but by wrong-doers. You desire do you not? to have no reason to fear your ruler. Well, do the thing that is right, and then he will commend you. | For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same: |
Romans 13:4 | For he is God's minister to thee, for good. But if thou do that which is evil, fear: for he beareth not the sword in vain. For he is God's minister: an avenger to execute wrath upon him that doth evil. | For he is God's servant for your benefit. But if you do what is wrong, be afraid. He does not wear the sword to no purpose: he is God's servant an administrator to inflict punishment upon evil-doers. | for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil. |
Romans 13:5 | Wherefore be subject of necessity, not only for wrath, but also for conscience' sake. | We must obey therefore, not only in order to escape punishment, but also for conscience' sake. | Wherefore [ye] must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience' sake. |
Romans 13:6 | For therefore also you pay tribute. For they are the ministers of God, serving unto this purpose. | Why, this is really the reason you pay taxes; for tax-gatherers are ministers of God, devoting their energies to this very work. | For this cause ye pay tribute also; for they are ministers of God's service, attending continually upon this very thing. |
Romans 13:7 | Render therefore to all men their dues. Tribute, to whom tribute is due: custom, to whom custom: fear, to whom fear: honour, to whom honour. | Pay promptly to all men what is due to them: taxes to those to whom taxes are due, toll to those to whom toll is due, respect to those to whom respect is due, honour to those to whom honour is due. | Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute [is due]; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor. |
Romans 13:8 | Owe no man any thing, but to love one another. For he that loveth his neighbour, hath fulfilled the law. | Owe nothing to any one except mutual love; for he who loves his fellow man has satisfied the demands of Law. | Owe no man anything, save to love one another: for he that loveth his neighbor hath fulfilled the law. |
Romans 13:9 | For Thou shalt not commit adultery: Thou shalt not kill: Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness: Thou shalt not covet: and if there be any other commandment, it is comprised in this word, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. | For the precepts, "Thou shalt not commit adultery," "Thou shalt do no murder," "Thou shalt not steal," "Thou shalt not covet," and all other precepts, are summed up in this one command, "Thou shalt love thy fellow man as much as thou lovest thyself." | For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not covet, and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. |
Romans 13:10 | The love of our neighbour worketh no evil. Love therefore is the fulfilling of the law. | Love avoids doing any wrong to one's fellow man, and is therefore complete obedience to Law. | Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: love therefore is the fulfilment of the law. |
Romans 13:11 | And that knowing the season; that it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep. For now our salvation is nearer than when we believed. | Carry out these injunctions because you know the critical period at which we are living, and that it is now high time, to rouse yourselves from sleep; for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first became believers. | And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we [first] believed. |
Romans 13:12 | The night is passed, and the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armour of light. | The night is far advanced, and day is about to dawn. We must therefore lay aside the deeds of darkness, and clothe ourselves with the armour of Light. | The night is far spent, and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. |
Romans 13:13 | Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy: | Living as we do in broad daylight, let us conduct ourselves becomingly, not indulging in revelry and drunkenness, nor in lust and debauchery, nor in quarrelling and jealousy. | Let us walk becomingly, as in the day; not in revelling and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy. |
Romans 13:14 | But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh in its concupiscences. | On the contrary, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for gratifying your earthly cravings. | But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to [fulfil] the lusts [thereof]. |
