1st-John 3:1 | Behold what manner of charity the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called, and should be the sons of God. Therefore the world knoweth not us, because it knew not him. | See what marvellous love the Father has bestowed upon us that we should be called God's children: and that is what we are. For this reason the world does not recognize us because it has not known Him. | See what great love the Father has given us in naming us the children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not see who we are, because it did not see who he was. |
1st-John 3:2 | Dearly beloved, we are now the sons of God; and it hath not yet appeared what we shall be. We know, that, when he shall appear, we shall be like to him: because we shall see him as he is. | Dear friends, we are now God's children, but what we are to be in the future has not yet been fully revealed. We know that if Christ reappears we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is. | My loved ones, now we are children of God, and at present it is not clear what we are to be. We are certain that at his revelation we will be like him; for we will see him as he is. |
1st-John 3:3 | And every one that hath this hope in him, sanctifieth himself, as he also is holy. | And every man who has this hope fixed on Him, purifies himself so as to be as pure as He is. | And everyone who has this hope in him makes himself holy, even as he is holy. |
1st-John 3:4 | Whosoever committeth sin commmitteth also iniquity; and sin is iniquity. | Every one who is guilty of sin is also guilty of violating Law; for sin is the violation of Law. | Everyone who is a sinner goes against the law, for sin is going against the law. |
1st-John 3:5 | And you know that he appeared to take away our sins, and in him there is no sin. | And you know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin. | And you have knowledge that he came to take away sin: and in him there is no sin. |
1st-John 3:6 | Whosoever abideth in him, sinneth not; and whosoever sinneth, hath not seen him, nor known him. | No one who continues in union with Him lives in sin: no one who lives in sin has seen Him or knows Him. | Anyone who is in him does no sin; anyone who is a sinner has not seen him and has no knowledge of him. |
1st-John 3:7 | Little children, let no man deceive you. He that doth justice is just, even as he is just. | Dear children, let no one lead you astray. The man who acts righteously is righteous, just as He is righteous. | My little children, let no man take you out of the true way: he who does righteousness is upright, even as he is upright; |
1st-John 3:8 | He that commmitteth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil. | He who is habitually guilty of sin is a child of the Devil, because the Devil has been a sinner from the very beginning. The Son of God appeared for the purpose of undoing the work of the Devil. | The sinner is a child of the Evil One; for the Evil One has been a sinner from the first. And the Son of God was seen on earth so that he might put an end to the works of the Evil One. |
1st-John 3:9 | Whosoever is born of God, commmitteth not sin: for his seed abideth in him, and he can not sin, because he is born of God. | No one who is a child of God is habitually guilty of sin. A God-given germ of life remains in him, and he cannot habitually sin because he is a child of God. | Anyone who is a child of God does no sin, because he still has God's seed in him; he is not able to be a sinner, because God is his Father. |
1st-John 3:10 | In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. Whosoever is not just, is not of God, nor he that loveth not his brother. | By this we can distinguish God's children and the Devil's children: no one who fails to act righteously is a child of God, nor he who does not love his brother man. | In this way it is clear who are the children of God and who are the children of the Evil One; anyone who does not do righteousness or who has no love for his brother, is not a child of God. |
1st-John 3:11 | For this is the declaration, which you have heard from the beginning, that you should love one another. | For this is the Message you have heard from the beginning that we are to love one another. | Because this is the word which was given to you from the first, that we are to have love for one another; |
1st-John 3:12 | Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one, and killed his brother. And wherefore did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked: and his brother's just. | We are not to resemble Cain, who was a child of the Evil one and killed his own brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own actions were wicked and his brother's actions righteous. | Not being of the Evil One like Cain, who put his brother to death. And why did he put him to death? Because his works were evil and his brother's works were good. |
1st-John 3:13 | Wonder not, brethren, if the world hate you. | Do not be surprised, brethren, if the world hates you. | Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world has no love for you. |
1st-John 3:14 | We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not, abideth in death. | As for us, we know that we have already passed out of death into Life because we love our brother men. He who is destitute of love continues dead. | We are conscious that we have come out of death into life because of our love for the brothers. He who has no love is still in death. |
1st-John 3:15 | Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in himself. | Every one who hates his brother man is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has the Life of the Ages continuing in him. | Anyone who has hate for his brother is a taker of life, and you may be certain that no taker of life has eternal life in him. |
1st-John 3:16 | In this we have known the charity of God, because he hath laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. | We know what love is through Christ's having laid down His life on our behalf; and in the same way we ought to lay down our lives for our brother men. | In this we see what love is, because he gave his life for us; and it is right for us to give our lives for the brothers. |
1st-John 3:17 | He that hath the substance of this world, and shall see his brother in need, and shall shut up his bowels from him: how doth the charity of God abide in him? | But if any one has this world's wealth and sees that his brother man is in need, and yet hardens his heart against him how can such a one continue to love God? | But if a man has this world's goods, and sees that his brother is in need, and keeps his heart shut against his brother, how is it possible for the love of God to be in him? |
1st-John 3:18 | My little children, let us not love in word, nor in tongue, but in deed, and in truth. | Dear children, let us not love in words only nor with the lips, but in deed and in truth. | My little children, do not let our love be in word and in tongue, but let it be in act and in good faith. |
1st-John 3:19 | In this we know that we are of the truth: and in his sight shall persuade our hearts. | And in this way we shall come to know that we are loyal to the truth, and shall satisfy our consciences in His presence | In this way we may be certain that we are true, and may give our heart comfort before him, |
1st-John 3:20 | For if our heart reprehend us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. | in whatever matters our hearts condemn us because God is greater than our hearts and knows everything. | When our heart says that we have done wrong; because God is greater than our heart, and has knowledge of all things. |
1st-John 3:21 | Dearly beloved, if our heart do not reprehend us, we have confidence towards God: | Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have perfect confidence towards God; | My loved ones, if our heart does not say that we have done wrong, we have no fear before him; |
1st-John 3:22 | And whatsoever we shall ask, we shall receive of him: because we keep his commandments, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight. | and whatever we ask for we obtain from Him, because we obey His commands and do the things which are pleasing in His sight. | And he gives us all our requests, because we keep his laws and do the things which are pleasing in his eyes. |
1st-John 3:23 | And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ: and love one another, as he hath given commandment unto us. | And this is His command that we are to believe in His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as He has commanded us to do. | And this is his law, that we have faith in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love for one another, even as he said to us. |
1st-John 3:24 | And he that keepeth his commandments, abideth in him, and he in him. And in this we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. | The man who obeys His commands continues in union with God, and God continues in union with him; and through His Spirit whom He has given us we can know that He continues in union with us. | He who keeps his laws is in God and God is in him. And the Spirit which he gave us is our witness that he is in us. |
