2nd-Peter 3:1 | Behold this second epistle I write to you, my dearly beloved, in which I stir up by way of admonition your sincere mind: | This letter which I am now writing to you, dear friends, is my second letter. In both my letters I seek to revive in your honest minds the memory of certain things, | My loved ones, this is now my second letter to you, and in this as in the first, I am attempting to keep your true minds awake; |
2nd-Peter 3:2 | That you may be mindful of those words which I told you before from the holy prophets, and of your apostles, of the precepts of the Lord and Saviour. | so that you may recall the words spoken long ago by the holy Prophets, and the commandments of our Lord and Saviour given you through your Apostles. | So that you may keep in mind the words of the holy prophets in the past, and the law of the Lord and Saviour which was given to you by his Apostles. |
2nd-Peter 3:3 | Knowing this first, that in the last days there shall come deceitful scoffers, walking after their own lusts, | But, above all, remember that, in the last days, men will come who make a mock at everything men governed only by their own passions, | Having first of all the knowledge that in the last days there will be men who, ruled by their evil desires, will make sport of holy things, |
2nd-Peter 3:4 | Saying: Where is his promise or his coming? for since the time that the fathers slept, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. | and, asking, "What has become of His promised Return? For from the time our forefathers fell asleep all things continue as they have been ever since the creation of the world." | Saying, Where is the hope of his coming? From the death of the fathers till now everything has gone on as it was from the making of the world. |
2nd-Peter 3:5 | For this they are wilfully ignorant of, that the heavens were before, and the earth out of water, and through water, consisting by the word of God. | For they are wilfully blind to the fact that there were heavens which existed of old, and an earth, the latter arising out of water and extending continuously through water, by the command of God; | But in taking this view they put out of their minds the memory that in the old days there was a heaven, and an earth lifted out of the water and circled by water, by the word of God; |
2nd-Peter 3:6 | Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. | and that, by means of these, the then existing race of men was overwhelmed with water and perished. | And that the world which then was came to an end through the overflowing of the waters. |
2nd-Peter 3:7 | But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of the ungodly men. | But the present heavens and the present earth are, by the command of the same God, kept stored up, reserved for fire in preparation for a day of judgement and of destruction for the ungodly. | But the present heaven and the present earth have been kept for destruction by fire, which is waiting for them on the day of the judging and destruction of evil men. |
2nd-Peter 3:8 | But of this one thing be not ignorant, my beloved, that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. | But there is one thing, dear friends, which you must not forget. With the Lord one day resembles a thousand years and a thousand years resemble one day. | But, my loved ones, keep in mind this one thing, that with the Lord one day is the same as a thousand years, and a thousand years are no more than one day. |
2nd-Peter 3:9 | The Lord delayeth not his promise, as some imagine, but dealeth patiently for your sake, not willing that any should perish, but that all should return to penance. | The Lord is not slow in fulfilling His promise, in the sense in which some men speak of slowness. But He bears patiently with you, His desire being that no one should perish but that all should come to repentance. | The Lord is not slow in keeping his word, as he seems to some, but he is waiting in mercy for you, not desiring the destruction of any, but that all may be turned from their evil ways. |
2nd-Peter 3:10 | But the day of the Lord shall come as a thief, in which the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and the elements shall be melted with heat, and the earth and the works which are in it, shall be burnt up. | The day of the Lord will come like a thief it will be a day on which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, the elements be destroyed in the fierce heat, and the earth and all the works of man be utterly burnt up. | But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; and in that day the heavens will be rolled up with a great noise, and the substance of the earth will be changed by violent heat, and the world and everything in it will be burned up. |
2nd-Peter 3:11 | Seeing then that all these things are to be dissolved, what manner of people ought you to be in holy conversation and godliness? | Since all these things are thus pre-destined to dissolution, what sort of men ought you to be found to be in all holy living and godly conduct, | Seeing then that all these things are coming to such an end, what sort of persons is it right for you to be, in all holy behaviour and righteousness, |
2nd-Peter 3:12 | Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of the Lord, by which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with the burning heat? | eagerly looking forward to the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens, all ablaze, will be destroyed, and the elements will melt in the fierce heat? | Looking for and truly desiring the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will come to an end through fire, and the substance of the earth will be changed by the great heat? |
2nd-Peter 3:13 | But we look for new heavens and a new earth according to his promises, in which justice dwelleth. | But in accordance with His promise we are expecting new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness will dwell. | But having faith in his word, we are looking for a new heaven and a new earth, which will be the resting-place of righteousness. |
2nd-Peter 3:14 | Wherefore, dearly beloved, waiting for these things, be diligent that you may be found before him unspotted and blameless in peace. | Therefore, dear friends, since you have these expectations, earnestly seek to be found in His presence, free from blemish or reproach, in peace. | For this reason, my loved ones, as you are looking for these things, take great care that when he comes you may be in peace before him, free from sin and every evil thing. |
2nd-Peter 3:15 | And account the longsuffering of our Lord, salvation; as also our most dear brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, hath written to you: | And always regard the patient forbearance of our Lord as salvation, as our dear brother Paul also has written to you in virtue of the wisdom granted to him. | And be certain that the long waiting of the Lord is for salvation; even as our brother Paul has said in his letters to you, from the wisdom which was given to him; |
2nd-Peter 3:16 | As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are certain things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. | That is what he says in all his letters, when speaking in them of these things. In those letters there are some statements hard to understand, which ill-taught and unprincipled people pervert, just as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own ruin. | And as he said in all his letters, which had to do with these things; in which are some hard sayings, so that, like the rest of the holy Writings, they are twisted by those who are uncertain and without knowledge, to the destruction of their souls. |
2nd-Peter 3:17 | You therefore, brethren, knowing these things before, take heed, lest being led aside by the error of the unwise, you fall from your own steadfastness. | You, therefore, dear friends, having been warned beforehand, must continually be on your guard so as not to be led astray by the false teaching of immoral men nor fall from your own stedfastness. | For this reason, my loved ones, having knowledge of these things before they take place, take care that you are not turned away by the error of the uncontrolled, so falling from your true faith. |
2nd-Peter 3:18 | But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and unto the day of eternity. Amen. | But be always growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be all glory, both now and to the day of Eternity! | But be increased in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. May he have glory now and for ever. So be it. |
