John 18:1When Jesus had said these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples. After offering this prayer Jesus went out with His disciples to a place on the further side of the Ravine of the Cedars, where there was a garden which He entered Himself and His disciples. When Jesus had said these words he went out with his disciples over the stream Kedron to a garden, into which he went with his disciples.
John 18:2And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples. Now Judas also, who at that very time was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often resorted there with His disciples. And Judas, who was false to him, had knowledge of the place because Jesus went there frequently with his disciples.
John 18:3Judas therefore having received a band of soldiers and servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. So Judas, followed by the battalion and by a detachment of the Temple police sent by the High Priests and Pharisees, came there with torches and lamps and weapons. So Judas, getting a band of armed men and police from the chief priests and Pharisees, went there with lights and with arms.
John 18:4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said to them: Whom seek ye?Jesus therefore, knowing all that was about to befall Him, went out to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" He asked them. Then Jesus, having knowledge of everything which was coming on him, went forward and said to them, Who are you looking for?
John 18:5They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them: I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them."For Jesus the Nazarene," was the answer. "I am he," He replied. (Now Judas who was betraying Him was also standing with them.)Their answer was, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said, I am he. And Judas, who was false to him, was there at their side.
John 18:6As soon therefore as he had said to them: I am he; they went backward, and fell to the ground. As soon then as He said to them, "I am he," they went backwards and fell to the ground. And when he said to them, I am he, they went back, falling to the earth.
John 18:7Again therefore he asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.Again therefore He asked them, "Who are you looking for?" "For Jesus the Nazarene," they said.So again he put the question to them, Who are you looking for? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene.
John 18:8Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way."I have told you," replied Jesus, "that I am he. If therefore you are looking for me, let these my disciples go their way."Jesus made answer, I have said that I am he; if you are looking for me, let these men go away.
John 18:9That the word might be fulfilled which he said: Of them whom thou hast given me, I have not lost any one.He made this request in order that the words He had spoken might be fulfilled, "As for those whom Thou hast given me, I have not lost one."(He said this so that his words might come true, I have kept safe all those whom you gave to me.)
John 18:10Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the name of the servant was Malchus.Simon Peter, however, having a sword, drew it, and, aiming at the High Priest's servant, cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, took it out and gave the high priest's servant a blow, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
John 18:11Jesus therefore said to Peter: Put up thy sword into the scabbard. The chalice which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put back your sword. Shall I refuse to drink the cup of sorrow which the Father has given me to drink?"Then Jesus said to Peter, Put back your sword: am I not to take the cup which my Father has given to me?
John 18:12Then the band and the tribune, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him:So the battalion and their tribune and the Jewish police closed in, and took Jesus and bound Him.Then the band and the chief captain and the police took Jesus and put cords round him.
John 18:13And they led him away to Annas first, for he was father in law to Caiphas, who was the high priest of that year. They then brought Him to Annas first; for Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was High Priest that year. They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was the high priest that year.
John 18:14Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people.(It was this Caiaphas who had advised the Jews, saying, "It is to your interest that one man should die for the People.")It was Caiaphas who had said to the Jews that it was in their interest for one man to be put to death for the people.
John 18:15And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest.Meanwhile Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so also was another disciple. The latter was known to the High Priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the High Priest's palace.And Simon Peter went after Jesus with another disciple. Now that disciple was a friend of the high priest and he went in with Jesus into the house of the high priest;
John 18:16But Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the portress, and brought in Peter. But Peter remained standing outside the door, till the disciple who was acquainted with the High Priest came out and induced the portress to let Peter in.But Peter was kept outside at the door. Then this other disciple, who was a friend of the high priest, came out and had a word with the girl who kept the door, and took Peter in.
John 18:17The maid therefore that was portress, saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith: I am not. This led the girl, the portress, to ask Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" "No, I am not," he replied. Then the girl who was the door-keeper said to Peter, Are you not one of this man's disciples? In answer he said, I am not.
John 18:18Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing, and warming himself. Now because it was cold the servants and the police had lighted a charcoal fire, and were standing and warming themselves; and Peter too remained with them, standing and warming himself. Now the servants and the police had made a fire of coals because it was cold; they were warming themselves in front of it and Peter was there with them, warming himself.
John 18:19The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. So the High Priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching. Then the high priest put questions to Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
John 18:20Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world: I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort; and in secret I have spoken nothing."As for me," replied Jesus, "I have spoken openly to the world. I have continually taught in some synagogue or in the Temple where all the Jews are wont to assemble, and I have said nothing in secret.Jesus made answer, I said things openly to the world at all times; I have given my teaching in the Synagogues and in the Temple to which all the Jews come; and I have said nothing secretly.
John 18:21Why asketh thou me? ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them: behold they know what things I have said. Why do you question me? Question those who heard what it was I said to them: these witnesses here know what I said."Why are you questioning me? put questions to my hearers about what I have said to them: they have knowledge of what I said.
John 18:22And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so?Upon His saying this, one of the officers standing by struck Him with his open hand, asking Him as he did so, "Is that the way you answer the High Priest?"When he said this, one of the police by his side gave him a blow with his open hand, saying, Do you give such an answer to the high priest?
John 18:23Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me?"If I have spoken wrongly," replied Jesus, "bear witness to it as wrong; but if rightly, why that blow?"Jesus said in answer, If I have said anything evil, give witness to the evil: but if I said what is true, why do you give me blows?
John 18:24And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest. So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the High Priest. Then Annas sent him chained to Caiaphas, the high priest.
John 18:25And Simon Peter was standing, and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said: I am not.But Simon Peter remained standing and warming himself, and this led to their asking him, "Are you also one of his disciples?" He denied it, and said, "No, I am not."But Simon Peter was still there warming himself by the fire. They said to him, Are you not one of his disciples? He said, No, I am not.
John 18:26One of the servants of the high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) saith to him: Did I not see thee in the garden with him?One of the High Priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?"One of the servants of the high priest, a relation of him whose ear had been cut off by Peter, said, Did I not see you with him in the garden?
John 18:27Again therefore Peter denied; and immediately the cock crew.Once more Peter denied it, and immediately a cock crowed. Then again Peter said, No. And straight away a cock gave its cry.
John 18:28Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor's hall. And it was morning; and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch. So they brought Jesus from Caiaphas's house to the Praetorium. It was the early morning, and they would not enter the Praetorium themselves for fear of defilement, and in order that they might be able to eat the Passover. So they took Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early. They themselves did not go into the Praetorium, so that they might not become unclean, but might take the Passover.
John 18:29Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man?Accordingly Pilate came out to them and inquired, "What accusation have you to bring against this man?"So Pilate came out to them and put the question: What have you to say against this man?
John 18:30They answered, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee."If the man were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."They said to him in answer, If the man was not a wrongdoer we would not have given him up to you.
John 18:31Pilate therefore said to them: Take him you, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him: It is not lawful for us to put any man to death;"Take him yourselves," said Pilate, "and judge him by your Law." "We have no power," replied the Jews, "to put any man to death."Then Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and let him be judged by your law. But the Jews said to him, We have no right to put any man to death.
John 18:32That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying what death he should die. They said this that the words might be fulfilled in which Jesus predicted the kind of death He was to die.(That the word of Jesus might come true, pointing to the sort of death he would have.)
John 18:33Pilate therefore went into the hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him: Art thou the king of the Jews?Re-entering the Praetorium, therefore, Pilate called Jesus and asked Him, "Are *you* the King of the Jews?"Then Pilate went back into the Praetorium and sent for Jesus and said to him, Are you the King of the Jews?
John 18:34Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me?"Do you say this of yourself, or have others told it you about me?" replied Jesus.Jesus made answer, Do you say this of yourself, or did others say it about me?
John 18:35Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?"Am I a Jew?" exclaimed Pilate; "it is your own nation and the High Priests who have handed you over to me. What have you done?"Pilate said, Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests have given you into my hands: what have you done?
John 18:36Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence."My kingdom," replied Jesus, "does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my subjects would have resolutely fought to save me from being delivered up to the Jews. But, as a matter of fact, my kingdom has not this origin."Jesus said in answer, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom was of this world, my disciples would have made a good fight to keep me out of the hands of the Jews: but my kingdom is not here.
John 18:37Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice."So then *you* are a king!" rejoined Pilate. "Yes," said Jesus, "you say truly that I am a king. For this purpose I was born, and for this purpose I have come into the world to give testimony for the truth. Every one who is a friend of the truth listens to my voice."Then Pilate said to him, Are you then a king? Jesus made answer, You say that I am a king. For this purpose was I given birth, and for this purpose I came into the world, that I might give witness to what is true. Every lover of what is true gives ear to my voice.
John 18:38Pilate saith to him: What is truth? And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them: I find no cause in him."What is truth?" said Pilate. But no sooner had he spoken the words than he went out again to the Jews and told them, "I find no crime in him.Pilate said to him, True? what is true? Having said this he went out again to the Jews and said to them, I see no wrong in him.
John 18:39But you have a custom that I should release one unto you at the pasch: will you, therefore, that I release unto you the king of the Jews? But you have a custom that I should release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So shall I release to you the King of the Jews?"But every year you make a request to me to let a prisoner go free at the Passover. Is it your desire that I let the King of the Jews go free?
John 18:40Then cried they all again, saying: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. With a roar of voices they again cried out, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber. Then again they gave a loud cry, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was an outlaw.
