John 5:1 | After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | After this there was a Festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
John 5:2 | Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches. | Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, called in Hebrew `Bethesda.' It has five arcades. | Now in Jerusalem near the sheep-market there is a public bath which in Hebrew is named Beth-zatha. It has five doorways. |
John 5:3 | In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered; waiting for the moving of the water. | In these there used to lie a great number of sick persons, and of people who were blind or lame or paralyzed. | In these doorways there were a great number of people with different diseases: some unable to see, some without the power of walking, some with wasted bodies. |
John 5:4 | And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water, was made whole, of whatsoever infirmity he lay under. | [] | [] |
John 5:5 | And there was a certain man there, that had been eight and thirty years under his infirmity. | And there was one man there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. | One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. |
John 5:6 | Him when Jesus had seen lying, and knew that he had been now a long time, he saith to him: Wilt thou be made whole? | Jesus saw him lying there, and knowing that he had been a long time in that condition, He asked him, "Do you wish to have health and strength?" | When Jesus saw him there on the floor it was clear to him that he had been now a long time in that condition, and so he said to the man, Is it your desire to get well? |
John 5:7 | The infirm man answered him: Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pond. For whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me. | "Sir," replied the sufferer, "I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is moved; but while I am coming some one else steps down before me." | The ill man said in answer, Sir, I have nobody to put me into the bath when the water is moving; and while I am on the way down some other person gets in before me. |
John 5:8 | Jesus saith to him: Arise, take up thy bed, and walk. | "Rise," said Jesus, "take up your mat and walk." | Jesus said to him, Get up, take your bed and go. |
John 5:9 | And immediately the man was made whole: and he took up his bed, and walked. And it was the sabbath that day. | Instantly the man was restored to perfect health, and he took up his mat and began to walk. | And the man became well straight away, and took up his bed and went. Now that day was the Sabbath. |
John 5:10 | The Jews therefore said to him that was healed: It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed. | That day was a Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, "It is the Sabbath: you must not carry your mat." | So the Jews said to the man who had been made well, It is the Sabbath; and it is against the law for you to take up your bed. |
John 5:11 | He answered them: He that made me whole, he said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk. | "He who cured me," he replied, "said to me, `Take up your mat and walk.'" | He said to them, But he who made me well, said to me, Take up your bed and go. |
John 5:12 | They asked him therefore: Who is that man who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? | "Who is it," they asked, "that said to you, `Take up your mat and walk'?" | Then they put to him the question: Who is the man who said to you, Take it up and go? |
John 5:13 | But he who was healed, knew not who it was; for Jesus went aside from the multitude standing in the place. | But the man who had been cured did not know who it was; for Jesus had passed out unnoticed, there being a crowd in the place. | Now he who had been made well had no knowledge who it was, Jesus having gone away because of the number of people who were in that place. |
John 5:14 | Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee. | Afterwards Jesus found him in the Temple and said to him, "You are now restored to health. Do not sin any more, or a worse thing may befall you." | After a time Jesus came across him in the Temple and said to him, See, you are well and strong; do no more sin for fear a worse thing comes to you. |
John 5:15 | The man went his way, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had made him whole. | The man went and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had restored him to health; | The man went away and said to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. |
John 5:16 | Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. | and on this account the Jews began to persecute Jesus because He did these things on the Sabbath. | And for this reason the Jews were turned against Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. |
John 5:17 | But Jesus answered them: My Father worketh until now; and I work. | His reply to their accusation was, "My Father works unceasingly, and so do I." | But his answer was: My Father is still working even now, and so I am working. |
John 5:18 | Hereupon therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he did not only break the sabbath, but also said God was his Father, making himself equal to God. | On this account then the Jews were all the more eager to put Him to death because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also spoke of God as being in a special sense His Father, thus putting Himself on a level with God. | For this cause the Jews had an even greater desire to put Jesus to death, because not only did he not keep the Sabbath but he said God was his Father, so making himself equal with God. |
John 5:19 | Then Jesus answered, and said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you, the Son cannot do any thing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doth, these the Son also doth in like manner. | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that the Son can do nothing of Himself He can only do what He sees the Father doing; for whatever He does, that the Son does in like manner. | So Jesus made answer and said, Truly I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything himself; he is able to do only what he sees the Father doing; whatever the Father does the Son does it in the same way. |
John 5:20 | For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things which himself doth: and greater works than these will he shew him, that you may wonder. | For the Father loves the Son and reveals to Him all that He Himself is doing. And greater deeds than these will He reveal to Him, in order that you may wonder. | For the Father has love for the Son and lets him see everything which he does: and he will let him see greater works than these so that you may be full of wonder. |
John 5:21 | For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and giveth life: so the Son also giveth life to whom he will. | For just as the Father awakens the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom He wills. | In the same way, as the Father gives life to the dead, even so the Son gives life to those to whom he is pleased to give it. |
John 5:22 | For neither doth the Father judge any man, but hath given all judgment to the Son. | The Father indeed does not judge any one, but He has entrusted all judgement to the Son, | The Father is not the judge of men, but he has given all decisions into the hands of the Son; |
John 5:23 | That all men may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father, who hath sent him. | that all may honour the Son even as they honour the Father. The man who withholds honour from the Son withholds honour from the Father who sent Him. | So that all men may give honour to the Son even as they give honour to the Father. He who gives no honour to the Son gives no honour to the Father who sent him. |
John 5:24 | Amen, amen I say unto you, that he who heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath life everlasting; and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life. | "In most solemn truth I tell you that he who listens to my teaching and believes Him who sent me, has the Life of the Ages, and does not come under judgement, but has passed over out of death into Life. | Truly I say to you, The man whose ears are open to my word and who has faith in him who sent me, has eternal life; he will not be judged, but has come from death into life. |
John 5:25 | Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. | "In most solemn truth I tell you that a time is coming nay, has already come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live. | Truly I say to you, The time is coming, it has even now come, when the voice of the Son of God will come to the ears of the dead, and those hearing it will have life. |
John 5:26 | For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given the Son also to have life in himself: | For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has also given to the Son to have life in Himself. | For even as the Father has life in himself, so he has given to the Son to have life in himself. |
John 5:27 | And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man. | And He has conferred on Him authority to act as Judge, because He is the Son of Man. | And he has given him authority to be judge because he is the Son of man. |
John 5:28 | Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh, wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God. | Wonder not at this. For a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice and will come forth | Do not be surprised at this: for the time is coming when his voice will come to all who are in the place of the dead, |
John 5:29 | And they that have done good things, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment. | they who have done what is right to the resurrection of Life, and they whose actions have been evil to the resurrection of judgement. | And they will come out; those who have done good, into the new life; and those who have done evil, to be judged. |
John 5:30 | I cannot of myself do any thing. As I hear, so I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me. | "I can of my own self do nothing. As I am bidden, so I judge; and mine is a just judgement, because it is not my own will that guides me, but the will of Him who sent me. | Of myself I am unable to do anything: as the voice comes to me so I give a decision: and my decision is right because I have no desire to do what is pleasing to myself, but only what is pleasing to him who sent me. |
John 5:31 | If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. | "If I give testimony concerning myself, my testimony cannot be accepted. | If I gave witness about myself, my witness would not be true. |
John 5:32 | There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. | There is Another who gives testimony concerning me, and I know that the testimony is true which He offers concerning me. | There is another who gives witness about me and I am certain that the witness he gives about me is true. |
John 5:33 | You sent to John, and he gave testimony to the truth. | "You sent to John, and he both was and still is a witness to the truth. | You sent to John and he gave true witness. |
John 5:34 | But I receive not testimony from man: but I say these things, that you may be saved. | But the testimony on my behalf which I accept is not from man; though I say all this in order that you may be saved. | But I have no need of a man's witness: I only say these things so that you may have salvation. |
John 5:35 | He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. | He was the lamp that burned and shone, and for a time you were willing to be gladdened by his light. | He was a burning and shining light, and for a time you were ready to be happy in his light. |
John 5:36 | But I have a greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to perfect; the works themselves, which I do, give testimony of me, that the Father hath sent me. | "But the testimony which I have is weightier than that of John; for the work the Father has assigned to me for me to bring it to completion the very work which I am doing affords testimony concerning me that the Father has sent me. | But the witness which I have is greater than that of John: the work which the Father has given me to do, the very work which I am now doing, is a witness that the Father has sent me. |
John 5:37 | And the Father himself who hath sent me, hath given testimony of me: neither have you heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. | And the Father who sent me, *He* has given testimony concerning me. None of you have ever either heard His voice or seen what He is like. | And the Father himself who sent me has given witness about me. Not one of you has ever given ear to his voice; his form you have not seen. |
John 5:38 | And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him you believe not. | Nor have you His word dwelling within you, for you refuse to believe Him whom *He* has sent. | And you have not kept his word in your hearts, because you have not faith in him whom he has sent. |
John 5:39 | Search the scriptures, for you think in them to have life everlasting; and the same are they that give testimony of me. | "You search the Scriptures, because you suppose that in them you will find the Life of the Ages; and it is those Scriptures that yield testimony concerning me; | You make search in the holy Writings, in the belief that through them you get eternal life; and it is those Writings which give witness about me. |
John 5:40 | And you will not come to me that you may have life. | and yet you are unwilling to come to me that you may have Life. | And still you have no desire to come to me so that you may have life. |
John 5:41 | I receive glory not from men. | "I do not accept glory from man, | I do not take honour from men; |
John 5:42 | But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you. | but I know you well, and I know that in your hearts you do not really love God. | But I have knowledge of you that you have no love for God in your hearts. |
John 5:43 | I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive. | I have come as my Father's representative, and you do not receive me. If some one else comes representing only himself, him you will receive. | I have come in my Father's name, and your hearts are not open to me. If another comes with no other authority but himself, you will give him your approval. |
John 5:44 | How can you believe, who receive glory one from another: and the glory which is from God alone, you do not seek? | How is it possible for you to believe, while you receive glory from one another and have no desire for the glory that comes from the only God? | How is it possible for you to have faith while you take honour one from another and have no desire for the honour which comes from the only God? |
John 5:45 | Think not that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one that accuseth you, Moses, in whom you trust. | "Do not suppose that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, namely Moses, on whom your hope rests. | Put out of your minds the thought that I will say things against you to the Father: the one who says things against you is Moses, on whom you put your hopes. |
John 5:46 | For if you did believe Moses, you would perhaps believe me also; for he wrote of me. | For if you believe Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. | If you had belief in Moses you would have belief in me; for his writings are about me. |
John 5:47 | But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words? | But if you disbelieve his writings, how are you to believe my words?" | If you have no belief in his writings, how will you have belief in my words? |
