John 8:1 | And Jesus went unto mount Olivet. | but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. | But Jesus went to the Mountain of Olives. |
John 8:2 | And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him, and sitting down he taught them. | At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself; | And early in the morning he came again into the Temple and all the people came to him and he was seated teaching them. |
John 8:3 | And the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman taken in adultery: and they set her in the midst, | and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him. | Now the scribes and Pharisees came, with a woman who had been taken in the act of sinning against the married relation; |
John 8:4 | And said to him: Master, this woman was even now taken in adultery. | "Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery. | And putting her forward, they said to him, Master, this woman has been taken in the very act of sinning against the married relation. |
John 8:5 | Now Moses in the law commanded us to stone such a one. But what sayest thou? | Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do you say?" | Now in the law Moses gave directions that such women were to be stoned; what do you say about it? |
John 8:6 | And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground. | They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground. | They said this, testing him, so that they might have something against him. But Jesus, with his head bent down, made letters on the floor with his finger. |
John 8:7 | When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. | When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them, "Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her." | But when they went on with their questions, he got up and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin be the first to send a stone at her. |
John 8:8 | And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground. | Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground. | And again, with bent head, he made letters on the floor. |
John 8:9 | But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst. | They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone and the woman in the centre of the court. | And when his words came to their ears, they went out one by one, starting with the oldest even to the last, because they were conscious of what was in their hearts: and Jesus was there by himself with the woman before him. |
John 8:10 | Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee? | Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?" | Then Jesus got up, and seeing nobody but the woman, he said to her, Where are the men who said things against you? did no one give a decision against you? |
John 8:11 | Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more. | "No one, Sir," she replied. "And *I* do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more."] | And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, And I do not give a decision against you: go, and never do wrong again.] |
John 8:12 | Again therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying: I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life. | Once more Jesus addressed them. "I am the Light of the world," He said; "the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life." | Then again Jesus said to them, I am the light of the world; he who comes with me will not be walking in the dark but will have the light of life. |
John 8:13 | The Pharisees therefore said to him: Thou givest testimony of thyself: thy testimony is not true. | "You are giving testimony about yourself," said the Pharisees; "your testimony is not true." | So the Pharisees said to him, The witness you give is about yourself: your witness is not true. |
John 8:14 | Jesus answered, and said to them: Although I give testimony of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go: but you know not whence I come, or whither I go. | "Even if I am giving testimony about myself," replied Jesus, "my testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you know neither of these two things. | Jesus said in answer, Even if I give witness about myself, my witness is true, because I have knowledge of where I came from and where I am going; but you have no knowledge of where I come from or of where I am going. |
John 8:15 | You judge according to the flesh: I judge not any man. | You judge according to appearances: I am judging no one. | You are judging from what you see; I am judging no man. |
John 8:16 | And if I do judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. | And even if I do judge, my judgement is just; for I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me. | Even if I am judging, my decision is right, because I am not by myself with me is the Father who sent me. |
John 8:17 | And in your law it is written, that the testimony of two men is true. | In your own Law, too, it is written that the testimony of two men is true. | Even in your law it is said that the witness of two men is true. |
John 8:18 | I am one that give testimony of myself: and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me. | I am one giving testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me gives testimony about me." | I give witness about myself and the Father who sent me gives witness about me. |
John 8:19 | They said therefore to him: Where is thy Father? Jesus answered: Neither me do you know, nor my Father: if you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also. | "Where is your Father?" they asked. "You know my Father as little as you know me." He replied; "if you knew me, you would know my Father also." | Then they said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus said in answer, You have no knowledge of me or of my Father: if you had knowledge of me you would have knowledge of my Father. |
John 8:20 | These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. | These sayings He uttered in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple; yet no one arrested Him, because His time had not yet come. | Jesus said these words in the place where the offerings were stored, while he was teaching in the Temple: but no man took him because his time was still to come. |
John 8:21 | Again therefore Jesus said to them: I go, and you shall seek me, and you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come. | Again He said to them, "I am going away. Then you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come." | Then he said to them again, I am going away and you will be looking for me, but death will overtake you in your sins. It is not possible for you to come where I am going. |
John 8:22 | The Jews therefore said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Whither I go, you cannot come? | The Jews began to ask one another, "Is he going to kill himself, do you think, that he says, `Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come'?" | So the Jews said, Will he take his life? Is that why he says, Where I go it is not possible for you to come? |
John 8:23 | And he said to them: You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world. | "You," He continued, "are from below, I am from above: you are of this present world, I am not of this present world. | And he said to them, You are of the earth; I am from heaven: you are of this world; I am not of this world. |
John 8:24 | Therefore I said to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin. | That is why I told you that you will die in your sins; for, unless you believe that I am He, that is what will happen." | For this reason I said to you that death will overtake you in your sins: for if you have not faith that I am he, death will come to you while you are in your sins. |
John 8:25 | They said therefore to him: Who art thou? Jesus said to them: The beginning, who also speak unto you. | "You who are you?" they asked. "How is it that I am speaking to you at all?" replied Jesus. | Then they said to him, Who are you? Jesus said, What I said to you from the first. |
John 8:26 | Many things I have to speak and to judge of you. But he that sent me, is true: and the things I have heard of him, these same I speak in the world. | "Many things I have to speak and to judge concerning you. But He who sent me is true, and the things which I have heard from Him are those which I have come into the world to speak." | I have much to say about you and against you: but he who sent me is true and what he has said to me I say to the world. |
John 8:27 | And they understood not, that he called God his Father. | They did not perceive that He was speaking to them of the Father. | They did not see that his words were about the Father. |
John 8:28 | Jesus therefore said to them: When you shall have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know, that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father hath taught me, these things I speak: | So Jesus added, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. Of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, so I speak. | So Jesus said, When the Son of man has been lifted up by you, then it will be clear to you who I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but say as the Father gave me teaching. |
John 8:29 | And he that sent me, is with me, and he hath not left me alone: for I do always the things that please him. | And He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone: for I do always what is pleasing to Him." | He who sent me is with me; he has not gone from me, because at all times I do the things which are pleasing to him. |
John 8:30 | When he spoke these things, many believed in him. | As He thus spoke, many became believers in Him. | When he said this a number came to have faith in him. |
John 8:31 | Then Jesus said to those Jews, who believed him: If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed. | Jesus therefore said to those of the Jews who had now believed in Him, "As for you, if you hold fast to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples; | Then Jesus said to the Jews who had faith in him, If you keep my word, then you are truly my disciples; |
John 8:32 | And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. | and you shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free." | And you will have knowledge of what is true, and that will make you free. |
John 8:33 | They answered him: We are the seed of Abraham, and we have never been slaves to any man: how sayest thou: you shall be free? | "We are descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and have never at any time been in slavery to any one. What do those words of yours mean, `You shall become free'?" | They said to him in answer, We are Abraham's seed and have never been any man's servant: why do you say, You will become free? |
John 8:34 | Jesus answered them: Amen, amen I say unto you: that whosoever committeth sin, is the servant of sin. | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin. | And this was the answer Jesus gave them: Truly I say to you, Everyone who does evil is the servant of sin. |
John 8:35 | Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever; but the son abideth for ever. | Now a slave does not remain permanently in his master's house, but a son does. | Now the servant does not go on living in the house for ever, but the son does. |
John 8:36 | If therefore the son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. | If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed. | If then the son makes you free, you will be truly free. |
John 8:37 | I know that you are the children of Abraham: but you seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. | You are descendants of Abraham, I know; but you want to kill me, because my teaching gains no ground within you. | I am conscious that you are Abraham's seed; but you have a desire to put me to death because my word has no place in you. |
John 8:38 | I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do the things that you have seen with your father. | The words I speak are those I have learnt in the presence of the Father. Therefore you also should do what you have heard from your father." | I say the things which I have seen in my Father's house: and you do the things which come to you from your father's house. |
John 8:39 | They answered, and said to him: Abraham is our father. Jesus saith to them: If you be the children of Abraham, do the works of Abraham. | "Our father is Abraham," they said. "If you were Abraham's children," replied Jesus, "it is Abraham's deeds that you would be doing. | In answer they said to him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus said to them, If you were Abraham's children you would do what Abraham did. |
John 8:40 | But now you seek to kill me, a man who have spoken the truth to you, which I have heard of God. This Abraham did not. | But, in fact, you are longing to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I have heard from God. Abraham did not do that. | But now you have a desire to put me to death, a man who has said to you what is true, as I had it from God: Abraham did not do that. |
John 8:41 | You do the works of your father. They said therefore to him: We are not born of fornication: we have one Father, even God. | You are doing the deeds of your father." "We," they replied, "are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, namely God." | You are doing the works of your father. They said to him, We are true sons of Abraham; we have one Father, who is God. |
John 8:42 | Jesus therefore said to them: If God were your Father, you would indeed love me. For from God I proceeded, and came; for I came not of myself, but he sent me: | "If God were your Father," said Jesus, "you would love me; for it is from God that I came and I am now here. I have not come of myself, but *He* sent me. | Jesus said to them, If God was your Father you would have love for me, because it was from God I came and am here. I did not come of myself, but he sent me. |
John 8:43 | Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word. | How is it you do not understand me when I speak? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my words. | Why are my words not clear to you? It is because your ears are shut to my teaching. |
John 8:44 | You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he stood not in the truth; because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof. | The father whose sons you are is the Devil; and you desire to do what gives him pleasure. *He* was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth for there is no truth in him. Whenever he utters his lie, he utters it out of his own store; for he is a liar, and the father of lies. | You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false. |
John 8:45 | But if I say the truth, you believe me not. | But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. | But because I say what is true, you have no belief in me. |
John 8:46 | Which of you shall convince me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me? | Which of *you* convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me? | Which of you is able truly to say that I am a sinner? If I say what is true, why have you no belief in me? |
John 8:47 | He that is of God, heareth the words of God. Therefore you hear them not, because you are not of God. | He who is a child of God listens to God's words. You do not listen to them: and why? It is because you are not God's children." | He who is a child of God gives ear to the words of God: your ears are not open to them because you are not from God. |
John 8:48 | The Jews therefore answered, and said to him: Do not we say well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? | "Are we not right," answered the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?" | The Jews said to him in answer, Are we not right in saying that you are of Samaria and have an evil spirit? |
John 8:49 | Jesus answered: I have not a devil: but I honour my Father, and you have dishonoured me. | "I am not possessed by a demon," replied Jesus. "On the contrary I honour my Father, and you dishonour me. | And this was the answer of Jesus: I have not an evil spirit; but I give honour to my Father and you do not give honour to me. |
John 8:50 | But I seek not my own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. | I, however, am not aiming at glory for myself: there is One who aims at glory for me and who judges. | I, however, am not in search of glory for myself: there is One who is searching for it and he is judge. |
John 8:51 | Amen, amen I say to you: If any man keep my word, he shall not see death for ever. | In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed my teaching he shall in no case ever see death." | Truly I say to you, If a man keeps my word he will never see death. |
John 8:52 | The Jews therefore said: Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest: If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death for ever. | "Now," exclaimed the Jews, "we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the Prophets, and yet *you* say, `If any one shall have obeyed my teaching, he shall in no case ever taste death.' | The Jews said to him, Now we are certain that you have an evil spirit. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead; and you say, If a man keeps my word he will never see death. |
John 8:53 | Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead. Whom dost thou make thyself? | Are you really greater than our forefather Abraham? For he died. And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?" | Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead: who do you say that you are? |
John 8:54 | Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom you say that he is your God. | "Were I to glorify myself," answered Jesus, "I should have no real glory. There is One who glorifies me namely my Father, who you say is your God. | Jesus said in answer, If I take glory for myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who gives me glory, of whom you say that he is your God. |
John 8:55 | And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I shall say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar. But I do know him, and do keep his word. | You do not know Him, but I know Him perfectly; and were I to deny my knowledge of Him, I should resemble you, and be a liar. On the contrary I do know Him, and I obey His commands. | You have no knowledge of him, but I have knowledge of him; and if I said I have no knowledge of him I would be talking falsely like you: but I have full knowledge of him, and I keep his word. |
John 8:56 | Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day: he saw it, and was glad. | Abraham your forefather exulted in the hope of seeing my day: and he saw it, and was glad." | Your father Abraham was full of joy at the hope of seeing my day: he saw it and was glad. |
John 8:57 | The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? | "You are not yet fifty years old," cried the Jews, "and have you seen Abraham?" | Then the Jews said to him, You are not fifty years old; have you seen Abraham? |
John 8:58 | Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am. | "In most solemn truth," answered Jesus, "I tell you that before Abraham came into existence, I am." | Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into being, I am. |
John 8:59 | They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple. | Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple. | So they took up stones to send at him: but Jesus got secretly out of their way and went out of the Temple. |
