Matthew 15:1 | Then came to him from Jerusalem scribes and Pharisees, saying: | Then there came to Jesus a party of Pharisees and Scribes from Jerusalem, who inquired, | Then there came to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying, |
Matthew 15:2 | Why do thy disciples trangress the tradition of the ancients? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread. | "Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the Elders by not washing their hands before meals?" | Why do your disciples go against the teaching of the fathers? for they take food with unwashed hands. |
Matthew 15:3 | But he answering, said to them: Why do you also transgress the commandment of God for your tradition? For God said: | "Why do you, too," He retorted, "transgress God's commands for the sake of your tradition? | And in answer he said to them, Why do you, yourselves, go against the word of God on account of the teaching which has been handed down to you? |
Matthew 15:4 | Honour thy father and mother: And: He that shall curse father or mother, let him die the death. | For God said, `Honour thy father and thy mother'; and `Let him who reviles father or mother be certainly put to death'; | For God said, Give honour to your father and mother: and, He who says evil of father or mother will be put to death. |
Matthew 15:5 | But you say: Whosoever shall say to father or mother, The gift whatsoever proceedeth from me, shall profit thee. | but you this is what you say: `If a man says to his father or mother, That is consecrated, whatever it is, which otherwise you should have received from me | But you say, If a man says to his father or his mother, That by which you might have had profit from me is given to God; |
Matthew 15:6 | And he shall not honour his father or his mother: and you have made void the commandment of God for your tradition. | he shall be absolved from honouring his father'; and so you have abrogated God's Word for the sake of your tradition. | There is no need for him to give honour to his father. And you have made the word of God without effect because of your teaching. |
Matthew 15:7 | Hypocrites, well hath Isaias prophesied of you, saying: | Hypocrites! well did Isaiah prophesy of you, | You false ones, well did Isaiah say of you, |
Matthew 15:8 | This people honoureth me with their lips: but their heart is far from me. | "`This is a People who honour Me with their lips, while their heart is far away from Me; | These people give me honour with their lips, but their heart is far from me. |
Matthew 15:9 | And in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men. | but it is in vain they worship Me, while they lay down precepts which are mere human rules.'" | But their worship is to no purpose, while they give as their teaching the rules of men. |
Matthew 15:10 | And having called together the multitudes unto him, he said to them: Hear ye and understand. | Then, when He had called the people to Him, Jesus said, "Hear and understand. | And he got the people together and said to them, Give ear, and let my words be clear to you: |
Matthew 15:11 | Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man: but what cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. | It is not what goes into a man's mouth that defiles him; but it is what comes out of his mouth *that* defiles a man." | Not that which goes into the mouth makes a man unclean, but that which comes out of the mouth. |
Matthew 15:12 | Then came his disciples, and said to him: Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard this word, were scandalized? | Then His disciples came and said to Him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were greatly shocked when they heard those words?" | Then the disciples came and said to him, Did you see that the Pharisees were troubled when these words came to their ears? |
Matthew 15:13 | But he answering them, said: Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. | "Every plant," He replied, "which my Heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. | But he said in answer, Every plant which my Father in heaven has not put in the earth, will be taken up by the roots. |
Matthew 15:14 | Let them alone: they are blind, and leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the pit. | Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind; and if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into some pit." | Let them be: they are blind guides. And if a blind man is guiding a blind man, the two will go falling into a hole together. |
Matthew 15:15 | And Peter answering, said to him: Expound to us this parable. | "Explain to us this figurative language," said Peter. | Then Peter said to him, Make the story clear to us. |
Matthew 15:16 | But he said: Are you also yet without understanding? | "Are even you," He answered, "still without intellingence? | And he said, Are you, like them, still without wisdom? |
Matthew 15:17 | Do you not understand, that whatsoever entereth into the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the privy? | Do you not understand that whatever enters the mouth passes into the stomach and is afterwards ejected from the body? | Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth goes on into the stomach, and is sent out as waste? |
Matthew 15:18 | But the things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart, and those things defile a man. | But the things that come out of the mouth proceed from the heart, and it is these that defile the man. | But the things which come out of the mouth come from the heart; and they make a man unclean. |
Matthew 15:19 | For from the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies. | For out of the heart proceed wicked thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, impiety of speech. | For out of the heart come evil thoughts, the taking of life, broken faith between the married, unclean desires of the flesh, taking of property, false witness, bitter words: |
Matthew 15:20 | These are the things that defile a man. But to eat with unwashed hands doth not defile a man. | These are the things which defile the man; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile." | These are the things which make a man unclean; but to take food with unwashed hands does not make a man unclean. |
Matthew 15:21 | And Jesus went from thence, and retired into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. | Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew into the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon. | And Jesus went away from there into the country of Tyre and Sidon. |
Matthew 15:22 | And behold a woman of Canaan who came out of those coasts, crying out, said to him: Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David: my daughter is grieviously troubled by the devil. | Here a Canaanitish woman of the district came out and persistently cried out, "Sir, Son of David, pity me; my daughter is cruelly harassed by a demon." | And a woman of Canaan came out from those parts, crying and saying, Have pity on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is greatly troubled with an unclean spirit. |
Matthew 15:23 | Who answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying: Send her away, for she crieth after us: | But He answered her not a word. Then the disciples interposed, and begged Him, saying, "Send her away because she keeps crying behind us." | But he gave her no answer. And his disciples came and said to him, Send her away, for she is crying after us. |
Matthew 15:24 | And he answering, said: I was not sent but to the sheep that are lost of the house of Israel. | "I have only been sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel," He replied. | But he made answer and said, I was sent only to the wandering sheep of the house of Israel. |
Matthew 15:25 | But she came and adored him, saying: Lord, help me. | Then she came and threw herself at His feet and entreated Him. "O Sir, help me," she said. | But she came and gave him worship, saying, Help, Lord. |
Matthew 15:26 | Who answering, said: It is not good to take the bread of the children, and to cast it to the dogs. | "It is not right," He said, "to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." | And he made answer and said, It is not right to take the children's bread and give it to the dogs. |
Matthew 15:27 | But she said: Yea, Lord; for the whelps also eat of the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters. | "Be it so, Sir," she said, "for even the dogs eat the scraps which fall from their masters' tables." | But she said, Yes, Lord: but even the dogs take the bits from under their masters' table. |
Matthew 15:28 | Then Jesus answering, said to her: O woman, great is thy faith: be it done to thee as thou wilt: and her daughter was cured from that hour. | "O woman," replied Jesus, "great is your faith: be it done to you as you desire." And from that moment her daughter was restored to health. | Then Jesus, answering, said to her, O woman, great is your faith: let your desire be done. And her daughter was made well from that hour. |
Matthew 15:29 | And when Jesus had passed away from thence, he came nigh the sea of Galilee. And going up into a mountain, he sat there. | Again, moving thence, Jesus went along by the Lake of Galilee; and ascending the hill, He sat down there. | And Jesus went from there and came to the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain, and took his seat there. |
Matthew 15:30 | And there came to him great multitudes, having with them the dumb, the blind, the lame, the maimed, and many others: and they cast them down at his feet, and he healed them: | Soon great crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were crippled in feet or hands, blind or dumb, and many besides, and they hastened to lay them at His feet. And He cured them, | And there came to him great numbers of people having with them those who were broken in body, or blind, or without voice, or wounded, or ill in any way, and a number of others; they put them down at his feet and he made them well: |
Matthew 15:31 | So that the multitudes marvelled seeing the dumb speak, the lame walk, and the blind see: and they glorified the God of Israel. | so that the people were amazed to see the dumb speaking, the maimed with their hands perfect, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they gave the glory to the God of Israel. | So that the people were full of wonder when they saw that those who had no voice were talking, the feeble were made strong, those whose bodies were broken had the power of walking, and the blind were able to see: and they gave glory to the God of Israel. |
Matthew 15:32 | And Jesus called together his disciples, and said: I have compassion on the multitudes, because they continue with me now three days, and have not what to eat, and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. | But Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, "My heart yearns over this mass of people, for it is now the third day that they have been with me and they have nothing to eat. I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they should faint on the road." | And Jesus got his disciples together and said, I have pity for the people, because they have now been with me three days and have no food: and I will not send them away without food, or they will have no strength for the journey. |
Matthew 15:33 | And the disciples say unto him: Whence then should we have so many loaves in the desert, as to fill so great a multitude? | "Where can we," asked the disciples, "get bread enough in this remote place to satisfy so vast a multitude?" | And the disciples say to him, How may we get enough bread in a waste place, to give food to such a number of people? |
Matthew 15:34 | And Jesus said to them: How many loaves have you? But they said: Seven, and a few little fishes. | "How many loaves have you?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they said, "and a few small fish." | And Jesus says to them, How much bread have you? And they said, Seven cakes, and some small fishes. |
Matthew 15:35 | And he commanded the multitude to sit down upon the ground. | So He bade all the people sit down on the ground, | Then he gave an order to the people to be seated on the earth, |
Matthew 15:36 | And taking the seven loaves and the fishes, and giving thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the people. | and He took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks He broke them up and then distributed them to the disciples, and they to the people. | And he took the seven cakes of bread and the fishes; and having given praise, he gave the broken bread to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to the people. |
Matthew 15:37 | And they did all eat, and had their fill. And they took up seven baskets full, of what remained of the fragments. | And they all ate and were satisfied. The broken portions that remained over they took up seven full hampers. | And they all took food, and had enough; and they took up of the broken bits, seven baskets full. |
Matthew 15:38 | And they that did eat, were four thousand men, beside children and women. | Those who ate were 4,000 adult men, without reckoning women and children. | And there were four thousand men who took food, together with women and children. |
Matthew 15:39 | And having dismissed the multitude, he went up into a boat, and came into the coasts of Magedan. | He then dismissed the people, went on board the boat, and came into the district of Magadan. | And when he had sent the people away, he got into the boat, and came into the country of Magadan. |
