Exodus 20:1 | And the Lord spoke all these words: | | God spoke all these words, saying, |
Exodus 20:2 | I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. | | "I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. |
Exodus 20:3 | Thou shalt not have strange gods before me. | | You shall have no other gods before me. |

Exodus 20:5 | Thou shalt not adore them, nor serve them: I am the Lord thy God, mighty, jealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me: | | you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, |
Exodus 20:6 | And shewing mercy unto thousands to them that love me, and keep my commandments. | | and showing lovingkindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. |
Exodus 20:7 | Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that shall take the name of the Lord his God in vain. | | "You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. |
Exodus 20:8 | Remember that thou keep holy the sabbath day. | | "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. |
Exodus 20:9 | Six days shalt thou labour, and shalt do all thy works. | | You shall labor six days, and do all your work, |
Exodus 20:10 | But on the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: thou shalt do no work on it, thou nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy beast, nor the stranger that is within thy gates. | | but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates; |
Exodus 20:11 | For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all things that are in them, and rested on the seventh day: therefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it. | | for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy. |
Exodus 20:12 | Honour thy father and thy mother, that thou mayest be longlived upon the land which the Lord thy God will give thee. | | "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. |

You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's." |
Exodus 20:18 | And all the people saw the voices and the flames, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mount smoking: and being terrified and struck with fear, they stood afar off, | | All the people perceived the thunderings, the lightnings, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled, and stayed at a distance. |
Exodus 20:19 | Saying to Moses: Speak thou to us, and we will hear: let not the Lord speak to us, lest we die. | | They said to Moses, "Speak with us yourself, and we will listen; but don't let God speak with us, lest we die." |
Exodus 20:20 | And Moses said to the people: Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that the dread of him might be in you, and you should not sin. | | Moses said to the people, "Don't be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won't sin." |
Exodus 20:21 | And the people stood afar off. But Moses went to the dark cloud wherein God was. | | The people stayed at a distance, and Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was. |
Exodus 20:22 | And the Lord said to Moses: Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel: You have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven. | | Yahweh said to Moses, "This is what you shall tell the children of Israel: 'You yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. |
Exodus 20:23 | You shall not make gods of silver, nor shall you make to yourselves gods of gold. | | You shall most certainly not make alongside of me gods of silver, or gods of gold for yourselves. |
Exodus 20:24 | You shall make an altar of earth unto me, and you shall offer upon it your holocausts and peace offerings, your sheep and oxen, in every place where the memory of my name shall be: I will come to thee, and will bless thee. | | You shall make an altar of earth for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace-offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I record my name I will come to you and I will bless you. |
Exodus 20:25 | And if thou make an altar of stone unto me, thou shalt not build it of hewn stones: for if thou lift up a tool upon it, it shall be defiled. | | If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones; for if you lift up your tool on it, you have polluted it. |
Exodus 20:26 | Thou shalt not go up by steps unto my altar, lest thy nakedness be discovered. | | Neither shall you go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed to it.' |
