1st-John 4:1 | Dearly beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits if they be of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. | Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but put the spirits to the test to see whether they are from God; for many false teachers have gone out into the world. | Beloved, every spirit believe not, but prove the spirits, if of God they are, because many false prophets have gone forth to the world; |
1st-John 4:2 | By this is the spirit of God known. Every spirit which confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God: | The test by which you may recognize the Spirit of God is that every spirit which acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come as man is from God, | in this know ye the Spirit of God; every spirit that doth confess Jesus Christ in the flesh having come, of God it is, |
1st-John 4:3 | And every spirit that dissolveth Jesus, is not of God: and this is Antichrist, of whom you have heard that he cometh, and he is now already in the world. | and that no spirit is from God which does not acknowledge this about Jesus. Such is the spirit of the anti-Christ; of whose coming you have heard, and it is already in the world. | and every spirit that doth not confess Jesus Christ in the flesh having come, of God it is not; and this is that of the antichrist, which ye heard that it doth come, and now in the world it is already. |
1st-John 4:4 | You are of God, little children, and have overcome him. Because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. | As for you, dear children, you are God's children, and have successfully resisted them; for greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. | Ye of God ye are, little children, and ye have overcome them; because greater is He who [is] in you, than he who is in the world. |
1st-John 4:5 | They are of the world: therefore of the world they speak, and the world heareth them. | They are the world's children, and so their language is that of the world, and the world listens to them. We are God's children. | They of the world they are; because of this from the world they speak, and the world doth hear them; |
1st-John 4:6 | We are of God. He that knoweth God, heareth us. He that is not of God, heareth us not. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. | The man who is beginning to know God listens to us, but he who is not a child of God does not listen to us. By this test we can distinguish the Spirit of truth from the spirit of error. | we of God we are; he who is knowing God doth hear us; he who is not of God, doth not hear us; from this we know the spirit of the truth, and the spirit of the error. |
1st-John 4:7 | Dearly beloved, let us love one another, for charity is of God. And every one that loveth, is born of God, and knoweth God. | Dear friends, let us love one another; for love has its origin in God, and every one who loves has become a child of God and is beginning to know God. | Beloved, may we love one another, because the love is of God, and every one who is loving, of God he hath been begotten, and doth know God; |
1st-John 4:8 | He that loveth not, knoweth not God: for God is charity. | He who is destitute of love has never had any knowledge of God; because God is love. | he who is not loving did not know God, because God is love. |
1st-John 4:9 | By this hath the charity of God appeared towards us, because God hath sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we may live by him. | God's love for us has been manifested in that He has sent His only Son into the world so that we may have Life through Him. | In this was manifested the love of God in us, because His Son the only begotten hath God sent to the world, that we may live through him; |
1st-John 4:10 | In this is charity: not as though we had loved God, but because he hath first loved us, and sent his Son to be a propitiation for our sins. | This is love indeed we did not love God, but He loved us and sent His Son to be an atoning sacrifice for our sins. | in this is the love, not that we loved God, but that He did love us, and did send His Son a propitiation for our sins. |
1st-John 4:11 | My dearest, if God hath so loved us; we also ought to love one another. | Dear friends, if God has so loved us, we also ought to love one another. | Beloved, if thus did God love us, we also ought one another to love; |
1st-John 4:12 | No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abideth in us, and his charity is perfected in us. | No one has ever yet seen God. If we love one another, God continues in union with us, and His love in all its perfection is in our hearts. | God no one hath ever seen; if we may love one another, God in us doth remain, and His love is having been perfected in us; |
1st-John 4:13 | In this we know that we abide in him, and he in us: because he hath given us of his spirit. | We can know that we are continuing in union with Him and that He is continuing in union with us, by the fact that He has given us a portion of His Spirit. | in this we know that in Him we do remain, and He in us, because of His Spirit He hath given us. |
1st-John 4:14 | And we have seen, and do testify, that the Father hath sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world. | And we have seen and bear witness that the Father has sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. | And we we have seen and do testify, that the Father hath sent the Son Saviour of the world; |
1st-John 4:15 | Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God abideth in him, and he in God. | Whoever acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God God continues in union with him, and he continues in union with God. | whoever may confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God in him doth remain, and he in God; |
1st-John 4:16 | And we have known, and have believed the charity, which God hath to us. God is charity: and he that abideth in charity, abideth in God, and God in him. | And, as for us, we know the love which God has for us, and we confide in it. God is love, and he who continues to love continues in union with God, and God continues in union with him. | and we we have known and believed the love, that God hath in us; God is love, and he who is remaining in the love, in God he doth remain, and God in him. |
1st-John 4:17 | In this is the charity of God perfected with us, that we may have confidence in the day of judgment: because as he is, we also are in this world. | Our love will be manifested in all its perfection by our having complete confidence on the day of the Judgement; because just what He is, we also are in the world. | In this made perfect hath been the love with us, that boldness we may have in the day of the judgment, because even as He is, we we also are in this world; |
1st-John 4:18 | Fear is not in charity: but perfect charity casteth out fear, because fear hath pain. And he that feareth, is not perfected in charity. | Love has in it no element of fear; but perfect love drives away fear, because fear involves pain, and if a man gives way to fear, there is something imperfect in his love. | fear is not in the love, but the perfect love doth cast out the fear, because the fear hath punishment, and he who is fearing hath not been made perfect in the love; |
1st-John 4:19 | Let us therefore love God, because God first hath loved us. | We love because God first loved us. | we we love him, because He He first loved us; |
1st-John 4:20 | If any man say, I love God, and hateth his brother; he is a liar. For he that loveth not his brother, whom he seeth, how can he love God, whom he seeth not? | If any one says that he loves God, while he hates his brother man, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother man whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. | if any one may say `I love God,` and his brother he may hate, a liar he is; for he who is not loving his brother whom he hath seen, God whom he hath not seen how is he able to love? |
1st-John 4:21 | And this commandment we have from God, that he, who loveth God, love also his brother. | And the command which we have from Him is that he who loves God must love his brother man also. | and this [is] the command we have from Him, that he who is loving God, may also love his brother. |
