Galatians 4:1 | Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; | Now I say that so long as an heir is a child, he in no respect differs from a slave, although he is the owner of everything, | And I say, so long time as the heir is a babe, he differeth nothing from a servant being lord of all, |
Galatians 4:2 | But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed by the father: | but he is under the control of guardians and trustees until the time his father has appointed. | but is under tutors and stewards till the time appointed of the father, |
Galatians 4:3 | So we also, when we were children, were serving under the elements of the world. | So we also, when spiritually we were children, were subject to the world's rudimentary notions, and were enslaved. | so also we, when we were babes, under the elements of the world were in servitude, |
Galatians 4:4 | But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent his Son, made of a woman, made under the law: | But, when the time was fully come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born subject to Law, | and when the fulness of time did come, God sent forth His Son, come of a woman, come under law, |
Galatians 4:5 | That he might redeem them who were under the law: that we might receive the adoption of sons. | in order to purchase the freedom of all who were subject to Law, so that we might receive recognition as sons. | that those under law he may redeem, that the adoption of sons we may receive; |
Galatians 4:6 | And because you are sons, God hath sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying: Abba, Father. | And because you are sons, God has sent out the Spirit of His Son to enter your hearts and cry "Abba! our Father!" | and because ye are sons, God did send forth the spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, `Abba, Father!` |
Galatians 4:7 | Therefore now he is not a servant, but a son. And if a son, an heir also through God. | Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir also through God's own act. | so that thou art no more a servant, but a son, and if a son, also an heir of God through Christ. |
Galatians 4:8 | But then indeed, not knowing God, you served them, who, by nature, are not gods. | But at one time, you Gentiles, having no knowledge of God, were slaves to gods which in reality do not exist. | But then, indeed, not having known God, ye were in servitude to those not by nature gods, |
Galatians 4:9 | But now, after that you have known God, or rather are known by God: how turn you again to the weak and needy elements, which you desire to serve again? | Now, however, having come to know God or rather to be known by Him how is it you are again turning back to weak and worthless rudimentary notions to which you are once more willing to be enslaved? | and now, having known God and rather being known by God how turn ye again unto the weak and poor elements to which anew ye desire to be in servitude? |
Galatians 4:10 | You observe days, and months, and times, and years. | You scrupulously observe days and months, special seasons, and years. | days ye observe, and months, and times, and years! |
Galatians 4:11 | I am afraid of you, lest perhaps I have laboured in vain among you. | I am alarmed about you, and am afraid that I have perhaps bestowed labour upon you to no purpose. | I am afraid of you, lest in vain I did labour toward you. |
Galatians 4:12 | Be ye as I, because I also am as you: brethren, I beseech you: you have not injured me at all. | Brethren, become as I am, I beseech you; for I have also become like you. In no respect did you behave badly to me. | Become as I [am] because I also [am] as ye brethren, I beseech you; to me ye did no hurt, |
Galatians 4:13 | And you know, how through infirmity of the flesh, I preached the gospel to you heretofore: and your temptation in my flesh, | And you know that in those early days it was on account of bodily infirmity that I proclaimed the Good News to you, | and ye have known that through infirmity of the flesh I did proclaim good news to you at the first, |
Galatians 4:14 | You despised not, nor rejected: but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. | and yet the bodily infirmity which was such a trial to you, you did not regard with contempt or loathing, but you received me as if I had been an angel of God or Christ Jesus Himself! | and my trial that [is] in my flesh ye did not despise nor reject, but as a messenger of God ye did receive me as Christ Jesus; |
Galatians 4:15 | Where is then your blessedness? For I bear you witness, that, if it could be done, you would have plucked out your own eyes, and would have given them to me. | I ask you, then, what has become of your self-congratulations? For I bear you witness that had it been possible you would have torn out your own eyes and have given them to me. | what then was your happiness? for I testify to you, that if possible, your eyes having plucked out, ye would have given to me; |
Galatians 4:16 | Am I then become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? | Can it be that I have become your enemy through speaking the truth to you? | so that your enemy have I become, being true to you? |
Galatians 4:17 | They are zealous in your regard not well: but they would exclude you, that you might be zealous for them. | These men pay court to you, but not with honourable motives. They want to exclude you, so that you may pay court to them. | they are zealous for you [yet] not well, but they wish to shut us out, that for them ye may be zealous; |
Galatians 4:18 | But be zealous for that which is good in a good thing always: and not only when I am present with you. | It is always an honourable thing to be courted in an honourable cause; always, and not only when I am with you, my children | and [it is] good to be zealously regarded, in what is good, at all times, and not only in my being present with you; |
Galatians 4:19 | My little children, of whom I am in labour again, until Christ be formed in you. | you for whom I am again, as it were, undergoing the pains of childbirth, until Christ is fully formed within you. | my little children, of whom again I travail in birth, till Christ may be formed in you, |
Galatians 4:20 | And I would willingly be present with you now, and change my voice: because I am ashamed for you. | Would that I were with you and could change my tone, for I am perplexed about you. | and I was wishing to be present with you now, and to change my voice, because I am in doubt about you. |
Galatians 4:21 | Tell me, you that desire to be under the law, have you not read the law? | Tell me you who want to continue to be subject to Law will you not listen to the Law? | Tell me, ye who are willing to be under law, the law do ye not hear? |
Galatians 4:22 | For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, and the other by a free woman. | For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave-girl and one by the free woman. | for it hath been written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the maid-servant, and one by the free-woman, |
Galatians 4:23 | But he who was of the bondwoman, was born according to the flesh: but he of the free woman, was by promise. | But we see that the child of the slave-girl was born in the common course of nature; but the child of the free woman in fulfilment of the promise. | but he who [is] of the maid-servant, according to flesh hath been, and he who [is] of the free-woman, through the promise; |
Galatians 4:24 | Which things are said by an allegory. For these are the two testaments. The one from mount Sina, engendering unto bondage; which is Agar: | All this is allegorical; for the women represent two Covenants. One has its origin on Mount Sinai, and bears children destined for slavery. | which things are allegorized, for these are the two covenants: one, indeed, from mount Sinai, to servitude bringing forth, which is Hagar; |
Galatians 4:25 | For Sina is a mountain in Arabia, which hath affinity to that Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. | This is Hagar; for the name Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, which is in bondage together with her children. | for this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and doth correspond to the Jerusalem that now [is], and is in servitude with her children, |
Galatians 4:26 | But that Jerusalem, which is above, is free: which is our mother. | But the Jerusalem which is above is free, and *she* is *our* mother. | and the Jerusalem above is the free-woman, which is mother of us all, |
Galatians 4:27 | For it is written: Rejoice, thou barren, that bearest not: break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for many are the children of the desolate, more than of her that hath a husband. | For it is written, "Rejoice, thou barren woman that bearest not, break forth into a joyful cry, thou that dost not travail with child. For the desolate woman has many children more indeed than she who has the husband." | for it hath been written, `Rejoice, O barren, who art not bearing; break forth and cry, thou who art not travailing, because many [are] the children of the desolate more than of her having the husband.` |
Galatians 4:28 | Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. | But you, brethren, like Isaac, are children born in fulfilment of a promise. | And we, brethren, as Isaac, are children of promise, |
Galatians 4:29 | But as then he, that was born according to the flesh, persecuted him that was after the spirit; so also it is now. | Yet just as, at that time, the child born in the common course of nature persecuted the one whose birth was due to the power of the Spirit, so it is now. | but as then he who was born according to the flesh did persecute him according to the spirit, so also now; |
Galatians 4:30 | But what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son; for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman. | But what says the Scripture? "Send away the slave-girl and her son, for never shall the slave-girl's son share the inheritance with the son of the free woman." | but what saith the Writing? `Cast forth the maid-servant and her son, for the son of the maid-servant may not be heir with the son of the free-woman;` |
Galatians 4:31 | So then, brethren, we are not the children of the bondwoman, but of the free: by the freedom wherewith Christ has made us free. | Therefore, brethren, since we are not the children of a slave-girl, but of the free woman | then, brethren, we are not a maid-servant`s children, but the free-woman`s. |
