John 4:1

When Jesus therefore understood that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus maketh more disciples, and baptizeth more than John,

Now as soon as the Master was aware that the Pharisees had heard it said, "Jesus is gaining and baptizing more disciples than John"

When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus more disciples doth make and baptize than John,

John 4:2

(Though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples,)

though Jesus Himself did not baptize them, but His disciples did

(though indeed Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples,)

John 4:3

He left Judea, and went again into Galilee.

He left Judaea and returned to Galilee.

he left Judea and went away again to Galilee,

John 4:4

And he was of necessity to pass through Samaria.

His road lay through Samaria,

and it was behoving him to go through Samaria.

John 4:5

He cometh therefore to a city of Samaria, which is called Sichar, near the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

and so He came to Sychar, a town in Samaria near the piece of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

He cometh, therefore, to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the place that Jacob gave to Joseph his son;

John 4:6

Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well. It was about the sixth hour.

Jacob's Well was there: and accordingly Jesus, tired out with His journey, sat down by the well to rest. It was about six o'clock in the evening.

and there was there a well of Jacob. Jesus therefore having been weary from the journeying, was sitting thus on the well; it was as it were the sixth hour;

John 4:7

There cometh a woman of Samaria, to draw water. Jesus saith to her: Give me to drink.

Presently there came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus asked her to give Him some water;

there cometh a woman out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, `Give me to drink;`

John 4:8

For his disciples were gone into the city to buy meats.

for His disciples were gone to the town to buy provisions.

for his disciples were gone away to the city, that they may buy victuals;

John 4:9

Then that Samaritan woman saith to him: How dost thou, being a Jew, ask of me to drink, who am a Samaritan woman? For the Jews do not communicate with the Samaritans.

"How is it," replied the woman, "that a Jew like you asks me, who am a woman and a Samaritan, for water?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

the Samaritan woman therefore saith to him, `How dost thou, being a Jew, ask drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?` for Jews have no dealing with Samaritans.

John 4:10

Jesus answered, and said to her: If thou didst know the gift of God, and who he is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou perhaps wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

"If you had known God's free gift," replied Jesus, "and who it is that said to you, `Give me some water,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."

Jesus answered and said to her, `If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.`

John 4:11

The woman saith to him: Sir, thou hast nothing wherein to draw, and the well is deep; from whence then hast thou living water?

"Sir," she said, "you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; so where can you get the living water from?

The woman saith to him, `Sir, thou hast not even a vessel to draw with, and the well is deep; whence, then, hast thou the living water?

John 4:12

Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

Are you greater than our forefather Jacob, who gave us the well, and himself drank from it, as did also his sons and his cattle?"

Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who did give us the well, and himself out of it did drink, and his sons, and his cattle?`

John 4:13

Jesus answered, and said to her: Whosoever drinketh of this water, shall thirst again; but he that shall drink of the water that I will give him, shall not thirst for ever:

"Every one," replied Jesus, "who drinks any of this water will be thirsty again;

Jesus answered and said to her, `Every one who is drinking of this water shall thirst again;

John 4:14

But the water that I will give him, shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into life everlasting.

but whoever drinks any of the water that I shall give him will never, never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become a fountain within him of water springing up for the Life of the Ages."

but whoever may drink of the water that I will give him, may not thirst to the age; and the water that I will give him shall become in him a well of water, springing up to life age-during.`

John 4:15

The woman saith to him: Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.

"Sir," said the woman, "give me that water, that I may never be thirsty, nor continually come all the way here to draw from the well."

The woman saith unto him, `Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.`

John 4:16

Jesus saith to her: Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17 The woman answered, and said: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: Thou hast said well, I have no husband:

"Go and call your husband," said Jesus; "and come back."

Jesus saith to her, `Go, call thy husband, and come hither;`

John 4:18

For thou hast had five husbands: and he whom thou now hast, is not thy husband. This thou hast said truly.

"I have no husband," she replied. "You rightly say that you have no husband," said Jesus;

the woman answered and said, `I have not a husband.` Jesus saith to her, `Well didst thou say A husband I have not;

John 4:19

The woman saith to him: Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

"for you have had five husbands, and the man you have at present is not your husband. You have spoken the truth in saying that."

for five husbands thou hast had, and, now, he whom thou hast is not thy husband; this hast thou said truly.`

John 4:20

Our fathers adored on this mountain, and you say, that at Jerusalem is the place where men must adore.

"Sir," replied the woman, "I see that you are a Prophet.

The woman saith to him, `Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet;

John 4:21

Jesus saith to her: Woman, believe me, that the hour cometh, when you shall neither on this mountain, not in Jerusalem, adore the Father.

Our forefathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem."

our fathers in this mountain did worship, and ye ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where it behoveth to worship.`

John 4:22

You adore that which you know not: we adore that which we know; for salvation is of the Jews.

"Believe me," said Jesus, "the time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

Jesus saith to her, `Woman, believe me, that there doth come an hour, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father;

John 4:23

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true adorers shall adore the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeketh such to adore him.

You worship One of whom you know nothing. We worship One whom we know; for salvation comes from the Jews.

ye worship what ye have not known; we worship what we have known, because the salvation is of the Jews;

John 4:24

God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth.

But a time is coming nay, has already come when the true worshippers will worship the Father with true spiritual worship; for indeed the Father desires such worshippers.

but, there cometh an hour, and it now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also doth seek such to worship him;

John 4:25

The woman saith to him: I know that the Messias cometh (who is called Christ); therefore, when he is come, he will tell us all things.

God is Spirit; and those who worship Him must bring Him true spiritual worship."

God [is] a Spirit, and those worshipping Him, in spirit and truth it doth behove to worship.`

John 4:26

Jesus saith to her: I am he, who am speaking with thee.

"I know," replied the woman, "that Messiah is coming `the Christ,' as He is called. When He has come, He will tell us everything."

The woman saith to him, `I have known that Messiah doth come, who is called Christ, when that one may come, he will tell us all things;`

John 4:27

And immediately his disciples came; and they wondered that he talked with the woman. Yet no man said: What seekest thou? or, why talkest thou with her?

"I am He," said Jesus "I who am now talking to you."

Jesus saith to her, `I am [he], who am speaking to thee.`

John 4:28

The woman therefore left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men there:

Just then His disciples came, and were surprised to find Him talking with a woman. Yet not one of them asked Him, "What is your wish?" or "Why are you talking with her?"

And upon this came his disciples, and were wondering that with a woman he was speaking, no one, however, said, `What seekest thou?` or `Why speakest thou with her?`

John 4:29

Come, and see a man who has told me all things whatsoever I have done. Is not he the Christ?

The woman however, leaving her pitcher, went away to the town, and called the people.

The woman then left her water-jug, and went away to the city, and saith to the men,

John 4:30

They went therefore out of the city, and came unto him.

"Come," she said, "and see a man who has told me everything I have ever done. Can this be the Christ, do you think?"

`Come, see a man, who told me all things as many as I did; is this the Christ?`

John 4:31

In the mean time the disciples prayed him, saying: Rabbi, eat.

They left the town and set out to go to Him.

They went forth therefore out of the city, and were coming unto him.

John 4:32

But he said to them: I have meat to eat, which you know not.

Meanwhile the disciples were urging Jesus. "Rabbi," they said, "eat something."

And in the meanwhile his disciples were asking him, saying, `Rabbi, eat;`

John 4:33

The disciples therefore said one to another: Hath any man brought him to eat?

"I have food to eat," He replied, "of which you do not know."

and he said to them, `I have food to eat that ye have not known.`

John 4:34

Jesus saith to them: My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, that I may perfect his work.

So the disciples began questioning one another. "Can it be," they said, "that some one has brought Him something to eat?"

The disciples then said one to another, `Did any one bring him anything to eat?`

John 4:35

Do you not say, There are yet four months, and then the harvest cometh? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and see the countries; for they are white already to harvest.

"My food," said Jesus, "is to be obedient to Him who sent me, and fully to accomplish His work.

Jesus saith to them, `My food is, that I may do the will of Him who sent me, and may finish His work;

John 4:36

And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life everlasting: that both he that soweth, and he that reapeth, may rejoice together.

Do you not say, `It wants four months yet to the harvest'? But look round, I tell you, and observe these plains they are already ripe for the sickle.

do not say that it is yet four months, and the harvest cometh; lo, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and see the fields, that they are white unto harvest already.

John 4:37

For in this is the saying true: That it is one man that soweth, and it is another that reapeth.

The reaper gets pay and gathers in a crop in preparation for the Life of the Ages, that so the sower and the reapers may rejoice together.

`And he who is reaping doth receive a reward, and doth gather fruit to life age-during, that both he who is sowing and he who is reaping may rejoice together;

John 4:38

I have sent you to reap that in which you did not labour: others have laboured, and you have entered into their labours.

For it is in this that you see the real meaning of the saying, `The sower is one person, and the reaper is another.'

for in this the saying is the true one, that one is the sower and another the reaper.

John 4:39

Now of that city many of the Samaritans believed in him, for the word of the woman giving testimony: He told me all things whatsoever I have done.

I sent you to reap a harvest which is not the result of your own labours. Others have laboured, and you are getting benefit from their labours."

I sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others laboured, and ye into their labour have entered.

John 4:40

So when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired that he would tarry there. And he abode there two days.

Of the Samaritan population of that town a good many believed in Him because of the woman's statement when she declared, "He has told me all that I have ever done."

And from that city many believed in him, of the Samaritans, because of the word of the woman testifying, `He told me all things as many as I did.`

John 4:41

And many more believed in him because of his own word.

When however the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him on all sides to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.

When, then, the Samaritans came unto him, they were asking him to remain with them, and he remained there two days;

John 4:42

And they said to the woman: We now believe, not for thy saying: for we ourselves have heard him, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.

Then a far larger number of people believed because of His own words,

and many more did believe because of his word,

John 4:43

Now after two days, he departed thence, and went into Galilee.

and they said to the woman, "We no longer believe in Him simply because of your statements; for we have now heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Saviour of the world."

and said to the woman `No more because of thy speaking do we believe; for we ourselves have heard and known that this is truly the Saviour of the world the Christ.`

John 4:44

For Jesus himself gave testimony that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

After the two days He departed, and went into Galilee;

And after the two days he went forth thence, and went away to Galilee,

John 4:45

And when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things he had done at Jerusalem on the festival day; for they also went to the festival day.

though Jesus Himself declared that a Prophet has no honour in his own country.

for Jesus himself testified that a prophet in his own country shall not have honour;

John 4:46

He came again therefore into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capharnaum.

When however He reached Galilee, the Galilaeans welcomed Him eagerly, having been eye-witnesses of all that He had done in Jerusalem at the Festival; for they also had been to the Festival.

when then, he came to Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all things that he did in Jerusalem in the feast for they also went to the feast.

John 4:47

He having heard that Jesus was come from Judea into Galilee, went to him, and prayed him to come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.

So He came once more to Cana in Galilee, where He had made the water into wine. Now there was a certain officer of the King's court whose son was ill at Capernaum.

Jesus came, therefore, again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine, and there was a certain courtier, whose son was ailing in Capernaum,

John 4:48

Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not.

Having heard that Jesus had come from Judaea to Galilee, he came to Him and begged Him to go down and cure his son; for he was at the point of death.

he, having heard that Jesus is come out of Judea to Galilee, went away unto him, and was asking him that he may come down and may heal his son, for he was about to die.

John 4:49

The ruler saith to him: Lord, come down before that my son die.

"Unless you and others see miracles and marvels," said Jesus, "nothing will induce you to believe."

Jesus then said unto him, `If signs and wonders ye may not see, ye will not believe.`

John 4:50

Jesus saith to him: Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way.

"Sir," pleaded the officer, "come down before my child dies."

The courtier saith unto him, `Sir, come down before my child die;`

John 4:51

And as he was going down, his servants met him; and they brought word, saying, that his son lived.

"You may return home," replied Jesus; "your son has recovered." He believed the words of Jesus, and started back home;

Jesus saith to him, `Be going on; thy son doth live.` And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and was going on,

John 4:52

He asked therefore of them the hour wherein he grew better. And they said to him: Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.

and he was already on his way down when his servants met him and told him that his son was alive and well.

and he now going down, his servants met him, and told, saying `Thy child doth live;`

John 4:53

The father therefore knew, that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed, and his whole house.

So he inquired of them at what hour he had shown improvement. "Yesterday, about seven o'clock," they replied, "the fever left him."

he inquired then of them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him `Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him;`

John 4:54

This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee.

Then the father recollected that that was the time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son has recovered," and he and his whole household became believers.

then the father knew that [it was] in that hour in which Jesus said to him `Thy son doth live,` and he himself believed, and his whole house;
