John 8:1 | And Jesus went unto mount Olivet. | but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. | And at dawn he came again to the temple, |
John 8:2 | And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him, and sitting down he taught them. | At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself; | and all the people were coming unto him, and having sat down, he was teaching them; |
John 8:3 | And the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman taken in adultery: and they set her in the midst, | and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him. | and the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman having been taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst, |
John 8:4 | And said to him: Master, this woman was even now taken in adultery. | "Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery. | they say to him, `Teacher, this woman was taken in the very crime committing adultery, |
John 8:5 | Now Moses in the law commanded us to stone such a one. But what sayest thou? | Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do you say?" | and in the law, Moses did command us that such be stoned; thou, therefore, what dost thou say?` |
John 8:6 | And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground. | They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground. | and this they said, trying him, that they might have to accuse him. And Jesus, having stooped down, with the finger he was writing on the ground, |
John 8:7 | When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. | When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them, "Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her." | and when they continued asking him, having bent himself back, he said unto them, `The sinless of you let him first cast the stone at her;` |
John 8:8 | And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground. | Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground. | and again having stooped down, he was writing on the ground, |
John 8:9 | But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst. | They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone and the woman in the centre of the court. | and they having heard, and by the conscience being convicted, were going forth one by one, having begun from the elders unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. |
John 8:10 | Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee? | Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?" | And Jesus having bent himself back, and having seen no one but the woman, said to her, `Woman, where are those thine accusers? did no one pass sentence upon thee?` |
John 8:11 | Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more. | "No one, Sir," she replied. "And *I* do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more."] | and she said, `No one, Sir;` and Jesus said to her, `Neither do I pass sentence on thee; be going on, and no more sin.` |
John 8:12 | Again therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying: I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life. | Once more Jesus addressed them. "I am the Light of the world," He said; "the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life." | Again, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, `I am the light of the world; he who is following me shall not walk in the darkness, but he shall have the light of the life.` |
John 8:13 | The Pharisees therefore said to him: Thou givest testimony of thyself: thy testimony is not true. | "You are giving testimony about yourself," said the Pharisees; "your testimony is not true." | The Pharisees, therefore, said to him, `Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;` |
John 8:14 | Jesus answered, and said to them: Although I give testimony of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go: but you know not whence I come, or whither I go. | "Even if I am giving testimony about myself," replied Jesus, "my testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you know neither of these two things. | Jesus answered and said to them, `And if I testify of myself my testimony is true, because I have known whence I came, and whither I go, and ye ye have not known whence I come, or whither I go. |
John 8:15 | You judge according to the flesh: I judge not any man. | You judge according to appearances: I am judging no one. | `Ye according to the flesh do judge; I do not judge any one, |
John 8:16 | And if I do judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. | And even if I do judge, my judgement is just; for I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me. | and even if I do judge my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me; |
John 8:17 | And in your law it is written, that the testimony of two men is true. | In your own Law, too, it is written that the testimony of two men is true. | and also in your law it hath been written, that the testimony of two men are true; |
John 8:18 | I am one that give testimony of myself: and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me. | I am one giving testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me gives testimony about me." | I am [one] who is testifying of myself, and the Father who sent me doth testify of me.` |
John 8:19 | They said therefore to him: Where is thy Father? Jesus answered: Neither me do you know, nor my Father: if you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also. | "Where is your Father?" they asked. "You know my Father as little as you know me." He replied; "if you knew me, you would know my Father also." | They said, therefore, to him, `Where is thy father?` Jesus answered, `Ye have neither known me nor my Father: if me ye had known, my Father also ye had known.` |
John 8:20 | These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. | These sayings He uttered in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple; yet no one arrested Him, because His time had not yet come. | These sayings spake Jesus in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come; |
John 8:21 | Again therefore Jesus said to them: I go, and you shall seek me, and you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come. | Again He said to them, "I am going away. Then you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come." | therefore said Jesus again to them, `I go away, and ye will seek me, and in your sin ye shall die; whither I go away, ye are not able to come.` |
John 8:22 | The Jews therefore said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Whither I go, you cannot come? | The Jews began to ask one another, "Is he going to kill himself, do you think, that he says, `Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come'?" | The Jews, therefore, said, `Will he kill himself, because he saith, Whither I go away, ye are not able to come?` |
John 8:23 | And he said to them: You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world. | "You," He continued, "are from below, I am from above: you are of this present world, I am not of this present world. | and he said to them, `Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world; |
John 8:24 | Therefore I said to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin. | That is why I told you that you will die in your sins; for, unless you believe that I am He, that is what will happen." | I said, therefore, to you, that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye may not believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.` |
John 8:25 | They said therefore to him: Who art thou? Jesus said to them: The beginning, who also speak unto you. | "You who are you?" they asked. "How is it that I am speaking to you at all?" replied Jesus. | They said, therefore, to him, `Thou who art thou?` and Jesus said to them, `Even what I did speak of to you at the beginning; |
John 8:26 | Many things I have to speak and to judge of you. But he that sent me, is true: and the things I have heard of him, these same I speak in the world. | "Many things I have to speak and to judge concerning you. But He who sent me is true, and the things which I have heard from Him are those which I have come into the world to speak." | many things I have to speak concerning you and to judge, but He who sent me is true, and I what things I heard from Him these I say to the world.` |
John 8:27 | And they understood not, that he called God his Father. | They did not perceive that He was speaking to them of the Father. | They knew not that of the Father he spake to them; |
John 8:28 | Jesus therefore said to them: When you shall have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know, that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father hath taught me, these things I speak: | So Jesus added, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. Of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, so I speak. | Jesus, therefore, said to them, `When ye may lift up the Son of Man then ye will know that I am [he]; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak; |
John 8:29 | And he that sent me, is with me, and he hath not left me alone: for I do always the things that please him. | And He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone: for I do always what is pleasing to Him." | and He who sent me is with me; the Father did not leave me alone, because I, the things pleasing to Him, do always.` |
John 8:30 | When he spoke these things, many believed in him. | As He thus spoke, many became believers in Him. | As he is speaking these things, many believed in him; |
John 8:31 | Then Jesus said to those Jews, who believed him: If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed. | Jesus therefore said to those of the Jews who had now believed in Him, "As for you, if you hold fast to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples; | Jesus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, `If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth, |
John 8:32 | And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. | and you shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free." | and the truth shall make you free.` |
John 8:33 | They answered him: We are the seed of Abraham, and we have never been slaves to any man: how sayest thou: you shall be free? | "We are descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and have never at any time been in slavery to any one. What do those words of yours mean, `You shall become free'?" | They answered him, `Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how dost thou say Ye shall become free?` |
John 8:34 | Jesus answered them: Amen, amen I say unto you: that whosoever committeth sin, is the servant of sin. | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin. | Jesus answered them, `Verily, verily, I say to you Every one who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin, |
John 8:35 | Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever; but the son abideth for ever. | Now a slave does not remain permanently in his master's house, but a son does. | and the servant doth not remain in the house to the age, the son doth remain to the age; |
John 8:36 | If therefore the son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. | If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed. | if then the son may make you free, in reality ye shall be free. |
John 8:37 | I know that you are the children of Abraham: but you seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. | You are descendants of Abraham, I know; but you want to kill me, because my teaching gains no ground within you. | `I have known that ye are seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you; |
John 8:38 | I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do the things that you have seen with your father. | The words I speak are those I have learnt in the presence of the Father. Therefore you also should do what you have heard from your father." | I that which I have seen with my Father do speak, and ye, therefore, that which ye have seen with your father ye do.` |
John 8:39 | They answered, and said to him: Abraham is our father. Jesus saith to them: If you be the children of Abraham, do the works of Abraham. | "Our father is Abraham," they said. "If you were Abraham's children," replied Jesus, "it is Abraham's deeds that you would be doing. | They answered and said to him, `Our father is Abraham;` Jesus saith to them, `If children of Abraham ye were, the works of Abraham ye were doing; |
John 8:40 | But now you seek to kill me, a man who have spoken the truth to you, which I have heard of God. This Abraham did not. | But, in fact, you are longing to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I have heard from God. Abraham did not do that. | and now, ye seek to kill me a man who hath spoken to you the truth I heard from God; this Abraham did not; |
John 8:41 | You do the works of your father. They said therefore to him: We are not born of fornication: we have one Father, even God. | You are doing the deeds of your father." "We," they replied, "are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, namely God." | ye do the works of your father.` They said, therefore, to him, `We of whoredom have not been born; one Father we have God;` |
John 8:42 | Jesus therefore said to them: If God were your Father, you would indeed love me. For from God I proceeded, and came; for I came not of myself, but he sent me: | "If God were your Father," said Jesus, "you would love me; for it is from God that I came and I am now here. I have not come of myself, but *He* sent me. | Jesus then said to them, `If God were your father, ye were loving me, for I came forth from God, and am come; for neither have I come of myself, but He sent me; |
John 8:43 | Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word. | How is it you do not understand me when I speak? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my words. | wherefore do ye not know my speech? because ye are not able to hear my word. |
John 8:44 | You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he stood not in the truth; because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof. | The father whose sons you are is the Devil; and you desire to do what gives him pleasure. *He* was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth for there is no truth in him. Whenever he utters his lie, he utters it out of his own store; for he is a liar, and the father of lies. | `Ye are of a father the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaketh, because he is a liar also his father. |
John 8:45 | But if I say the truth, you believe me not. | But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. | `And because I say the truth, ye do not believe me. |
John 8:46 | Which of you shall convince me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me? | Which of *you* convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me? | Who of you doth convict me of sin? and if I speak truth, wherefore do ye not believe me? |
John 8:47 | He that is of God, heareth the words of God. Therefore you hear them not, because you are not of God. | He who is a child of God listens to God's words. You do not listen to them: and why? It is because you are not God's children." | he who is of God, the sayings of God he doth hear; because of this ye do not hear, because of God ye are not.` |
John 8:48 | The Jews therefore answered, and said to him: Do not we say well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? | "Are we not right," answered the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?" | The Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, `Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?` |
John 8:49 | Jesus answered: I have not a devil: but I honour my Father, and you have dishonoured me. | "I am not possessed by a demon," replied Jesus. "On the contrary I honour my Father, and you dishonour me. | Jesus answered, `I have not a demon, but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me; |
John 8:50 | But I seek not my own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. | I, however, am not aiming at glory for myself: there is One who aims at glory for me and who judges. | and I do not seek my own glory; there is who is seeking and is judging; |
John 8:51 | Amen, amen I say to you: If any man keep my word, he shall not see death for ever. | In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed my teaching he shall in no case ever see death." | verily, verily, I say to you, If any one may keep my word, death he may not see to the age.` |
John 8:52 | The Jews therefore said: Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest: If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death for ever. | "Now," exclaimed the Jews, "we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the Prophets, and yet *you* say, `If any one shall have obeyed my teaching, he shall in no case ever taste death.' | The Jews, therefore, said to him, `Now we have known that thou hast a demon; Abraham did die, and the prophets, and thou dost say, If any one may keep my word, he shall not taste of death to the age! |
John 8:53 | Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead. Whom dost thou make thyself? | Are you really greater than our forefather Abraham? For he died. And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?" | Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom dost thou make thyself?` |
John 8:54 | Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom you say that he is your God. | "Were I to glorify myself," answered Jesus, "I should have no real glory. There is One who glorifies me namely my Father, who you say is your God. | Jesus answered, `If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me, of whom ye say that He is your God; |
John 8:55 | And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I shall say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar. But I do know him, and do keep his word. | You do not know Him, but I know Him perfectly; and were I to deny my knowledge of Him, I should resemble you, and be a liar. On the contrary I do know Him, and I obey His commands. | and ye have not known Him, and I have known Him, and if I say that I have not known Him, I shall be like you speaking falsely; but I have known Him, and His word I keep; |
John 8:56 | Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day: he saw it, and was glad. | Abraham your forefather exulted in the hope of seeing my day: and he saw it, and was glad." | Abraham, your father, was glad that he might see my day; and he saw, and did rejoice.` |
John 8:57 | The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? | "You are not yet fifty years old," cried the Jews, "and have you seen Abraham?" | The Jews, therefore, said unto him, `Thou art not yet fifty years old, and Abraham hast thou seen?` |
John 8:58 | Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am. | "In most solemn truth," answered Jesus, "I tell you that before Abraham came into existence, I am." | Jesus said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham`s coming I am;` |
John 8:59 | They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple. | Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple. | they took up, therefore, stones that they may cast at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. |
