Matthew 19:1 | And it came to pass when Jesus had ended these words, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judea, beyond Jordan. | It happened when Jesus had finished these words, he departed from Galilee, and came into the borders of Judea beyond the Jordan. | And it came about that after saying these words, Jesus went away from Galilee, and came into the parts of Judaea on the other side of Jordan. |
Matthew 19:2 | And great multitudes followed him: and he healed them there. | Great multitudes followed him, and he healed them there. | And a great number went after him; and he made them well there. |
Matthew 19:3 | And there came to him the Pharisees tempting him, and saying: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? | Pharisees came to him, testing him, and saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?" | And certain Pharisees came to him, testing him, and saying, Is it right for a man to put away his wife for every cause? |
Matthew 19:4 | Who answering, said to them: Have ye not read, that he who made man from the beginning, Made them male and female? And he said: | He answered, "Haven't you read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, | And he said in answer, Have you not seen in the Writings, that he who made them at the first made them male and female, and said, |
Matthew 19:5 | For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they two shall be in one flesh. | and said, 'For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will join to his wife; and the two will become one flesh?' | For this cause will a man go away from his father and mother, and be joined to his wife; and the two will become one flesh? |
Matthew 19:6 | Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder. | So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, don't let man tear apart." | So that they are no longer two, but one flesh. Then let not that which has been joined by God be parted by man. |
Matthew 19:7 | They say to him: Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce, and to put away? | They asked him, "Why then did Moses command us to give her a bill of divorce, and divorce her?" | They say to him, Why then did Moses give orders that a husband might give her a statement in writing and be free from her? |
Matthew 19:8 | He saith to them: Because Moses by reason of the hardness of your heart permitted you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. | He said to them, "Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been so. | He says to them, Moses, because of your hard hearts, let you put away your wives: but it has not been so from the first. |
Matthew 19:9 | And I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that shall marry her that is put away, committeth adultery. | I tell you that whoever will put away his wife, except for sexual immorality, and will marry another, commits adultery; and he who marries her when she is put away commits adultery." | And I say to you, Whoever puts away his wife for any other cause than the loss of her virtue, and takes another, is a false husband: and he who takes her as his wife when she is put away, is no true husband to her. |
Matthew 19:10 | His disciples say unto him: If the case of a man with his wife be so, it is not expedient to marry. | His disciples said to him, "If this is the case of the man with his wife, it is not expedient to marry." | The disciples say to him, If this is the position of a man in relation to his wife, it is better not to be married. |
Matthew 19:11 | Who said to them: All men take not this word, but they to whom it is given. | But he said to them, "Not all men can receive this saying, but they to whom it is given. | But he said to them, Not all men are able to take in this saying, but only those to whom it is given. |
Matthew 19:12 | For there are eunuchs, who were born so from their mother's womb: and there are eunuchs, who were made so by men: and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. He that can take, let him take it. | For there are eunuchs, who were born that way from their mother's womb, and there are eunuchs, who were made eunuchs by men: and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the Kingdom of Heaven's sake. He who is able to receive it, let him receive it." | For there are men who, from birth, were without sex: and there are some who were made so by men: and there are others who have made themselves so for the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to take it, let him take it. |
Matthew 19:13 | Then were little children presented to him, that he should impose hands upon them and pray. And the disciples rebuked them. | Then little children were brought to him, that he should lay his hands on them, and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. | Then some people took little children to him, so that he might put his hands on them in blessing: and the disciples said sharp words to them. |
Matthew 19:14 | But Jesus said to them: Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come to me: for the kingdom of heaven is for such. | But Jesus said, "Allow the little children, and don't forbid them to come to me; for to such belongs the Kingdom of Heaven." | But Jesus said, Let the little ones come to me, and do not keep them away: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. |
Matthew 19:15 | And when he had imposed hands upon them, he departed from thence. | He laid his hands on them, and departed there. | And he put his hands on them, and went away. |
Matthew 19:16 | And behold one came and said to him: Good master, what good shall I do that I may have life everlasting? | Behold, one came to him and said, "Good teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?" | And one came to him and said, Master, what good thing have I to do, so that I may have eternal life? |
Matthew 19:17 | Who said to him: Why asketh thou me concerning good? One is good, God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. | He said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but one, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments." | And he said to him, Why are you questioning me about what is good? One there is who is good: but if you have a desire to go into life, keep the rules of the law. |
Matthew 19:18 | He said to him: Which? And Jesus said: Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness. | He said to him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not offer false testimony. | He says to him, Which? And Jesus said, Do not put anyone to death, Do not be untrue in married life, Do not take what is not yours, Do not give false witness, |
Matthew 19:19 | Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. | Honor your father and mother. And, you shall love your neighbor as yourself." | Give honour to your father and your mother: and, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself. |
Matthew 19:20 | The young man saith to him: All these I have kept from my youth, what is yet wanting to me? | The young man said to him, "All these things I have observed from my youth. What do I still lack?" | The young man says to him, All these things have I done: what more is there? |
Matthew 19:21 | Jesus saith to him: If thou wilt be perfect, go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come follow me. | Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." | Jesus said to him, If you have a desire to be complete, go, get money for your property, and give it to the poor, and you will have wealth in heaven: and come after me. |
Matthew 19:22 | And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad: for he had great possessions. | But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sad, for he was one who had great possessions. | But hearing these words the young man went away sorrowing: for he had much property. |
Matthew 19:23 | Then Jesus said to his disciples: Amen, I say to you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. | Jesus said to his disciples, "Most assuredly I say to you, a rich man will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven with difficulty. | And Jesus said to his disciples, Truly I say to you, It is hard for a man with much money to go into the kingdom of heaven. |
Matthew 19:24 | And again I say to you: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. | Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." | And again I say to you, It is simpler for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a man with much money to go into the kingdom of God. |
Matthew 19:25 | And when they had heard this, the disciples wondered very much, saying: Who then can be saved? | When the disciples heard it, they were exceedingly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" | And the disciples, hearing this, were greatly surprised, saying, Who then may have salvation? |
Matthew 19:26 | And Jesus beholding, said to them: With men this is impossible: but with God all things are possible. | Looking at them, Jesus said, "With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible." | And Jesus, looking at them, said, With men this is not possible; but with God all things are possible. |
Matthew 19:27 | Then Peter answering, said to him: Behold we have left all things, and have followed thee: what therefore shall we have? | Then Peter answered, "Behold, we have left everything, and followed you. What then will we have?" | Then Peter said to him, See, we have given up everything and have come after you; what then will we have? |
Matthew 19:28 | And Jesus said to them: Amen, I say to you, that you, who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, you also shall sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly I tell you, that you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | And Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you that in the time when all things are made new, and the Son of man is seated in his glory, you who have come after me will be seated on twelve seats, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
Matthew 19:29 | And every one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting. | Everyone who has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, will receive one hundred times, and will inherit eternal life. | And everyone who has given up houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or child, or land, for my name, will be given a hundred times as much, and have eternal life. |
Matthew 19:30 | And many that are first, shall be last: and the last shall be first. | But many will be last who are first; and first who are last. | But a great number who are first will be last, and some who are last will be first. |
