Genesis 38:8 | Juda, therefore add to Onan his son: Go in to thy brother's wife and marry her, that thou mayst raise seed to thy brother. | Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her, and raise up seed to your brother." | Then Judah said to Onan, Go in to thy brother's wife, and fulfil to her the brother-in-law's duty, and raise up seed to thy brother. |
Genesis 38:9 | He knowing that the children should not be his, when he went in to his brother's wife, spilled his seed upon the ground, lest children should be born in his brother's name. | Onan knew that the seed wouldn't be his; and it happened, when he went in to his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother. | But when Onan knew that the seed should not be his own, it came to pass when he went in to his brother's wife, that he spilled [it] on the ground, in order to give no seed to his brother. |
Genesis 38:10 | And therefore the Lord slew him, be- cause he did a detestable thing. | The thing which he did was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and he killed him also. | And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and he slew him also. |

She went her way and dwelt in her father's house. | Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow in your father's house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up;" for he said, "Lest he also die, like his brothers." Tamar went and lived in her father's house. | And Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, Remain a widow in thy father's house, until Shelah my son is grown; for he said, Lest he die also, as his brethren. And Tamar went and remained in her father's house. |

Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep-shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite. | And as the days were multiplied, Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. And Judah was comforted, and he went up to his sheep-shearers, to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. |

Genesis 38:14 | And she put off the garments of her widowhood, and took a veil: and changing her dress, sat in the cross way, that leadeth to Thamnas: because Sela was grown up, and she had not been married to him. | She took off of her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn't given to him as a wife. | And she put the garments of her widowhood off from her, and covered herself with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the entry of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as wife. |
Genesis 38:16 | When Juda saw her, he thought she was a harlot: for she had covered her face, lest she should be known. | When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. | And Judah saw her, and took her for a harlot; because she had covered her face. |

And she answered: What wilt thou give me to en joy my company? | He turned to her by the way, and said, "Please come, let me come in to you:" for he didn't know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?" | And he turned aside to her by the way, and said, Come, I pray thee, let me go in to thee; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in to me? |
Genesis 38:17 | He said: I will send thee a kid out of the flock. And when she said again: I will suffer what thou wilt, if thou give a pledge, till thou send what thou promisest, | He said, "I will send you a kid of the goats from the flock." She said, "Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?" | And he said, I will send [thee] a kid of the goats from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give [me] a pledge, until thou send it? |
Genesis 38:18 | Juda said: What wilt thou have for a pledge ? She answered: Thy ring and bracelet, and the staff which thou holdest in thy hand. The woman therefore at one copulation conceived. | He said, "What pledge will I give you?" She said, "Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand." He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him. | And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy lace, and thy staff which is in thy hand. And he gave [it] her, and went in to her; and she conceived by him. |
Genesis 38:19 | And she arose and went her way: and putting off the apparel which she had taken, put on the garments of her widowhood. | She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood. | And she arose and went away; and she laid by her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood. |

Genesis 38:21 | asked the men of that place : Where is the woman that sat in the cross way? And when they all made answer: There was no harlot in this place, | Then he asked the men of her place, saying, "Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?" They said, "There has been no prostitute here." | And he asked the men of her place, saying, Where is the prostitute that was at Enaim, by the way-side? And they said, There was no prostitute here. |
Genesis 38:22 | He returned to Juda, and said to him: I have not found her; moreover the men of that place said to me, that there never sat a harlot there. | He returned to Judah, and said, "I haven't found her; and also the men of the place said, 'There has been no prostitute here.'" | And he returned to Judah, and said, I have not found her; and also the men of the place said, No prostitute has been here. |
Genesis 38:23 | Juda said : Let her take it to herself ; surely she cannot charge us with a,lie: I sent the kid which I promised: and thou didst not find her. | Judah said, "Let her keep it, lest we be put to shame. Behold, I sent this kid, and you haven't found her." | Then Judah said, Let her take [it] for herself, lest we be put to shame. Behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her. |
Genesis 38:24 | And behold after three months they told a lie, saying: Thamar, thy daughter in law hath played the harlot, and she appeareth to have a big belly. And Juda said : Bring her out that she may be burnt. | It happened about three months later, that it was told Judah, saying, "Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute; and moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution." Judah said, "Bring her forth, and let her be burnt." | And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter-in-law has committed fornication, and behold, she is also with child by fornication. And Judah said, Bring her forth, that she may be burned. |
Genesis 38:26 | But when she was led to execution, she sent to her father in law, saying: By the man, to whom these things belong, I am with child. See whose ring, and bracelet, and staff this is. | When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, "By the man, whose these are, I am with child." She also said, "Please discern whose are these - the signet, and the cords, and the staff." | When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, By the man to whom these [belong] am I with child; and she said, Acknowledge, I pray thee, whose are this signet, and this lace, and this staff. |
Genesis 38:26 | But he acknowledging the gifts, said: She is juster than I: because I did not give her to Sela, my son. However, he knew her no more. | Judah acknowledged them, and said, "She is more righteous than I, because I didn't give her to Shelah, my son." He knew her again no more. | And Judah acknowledged [them], and said, She is more righteous than I, because I have not given her to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more. |

Genesis 38:28 | This shall come forth the first. | It happened, when she travailed, that one put out a hand: and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, "This came out first." | And it came to pass when she brought forth, that one stretched out [his] hand, and the midwife took it and bound round his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. |
Genesis 38:29 | But he drawing back his hand, the other came forth: and the woman said: Why is the partition divided for thee? and therefore called his name Phares. | It happened, as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out, and she said, "Why have you made a breach for yourself?" Therefore his name was called Perez. | And it came to pass as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out; and she said, How hast thou broken forth! on thee be the breach! And they called his name Pherez. |
Genesis 38:30 | Afterwards his brother came out, on whose hand was the scarlet thread: and she called him Zara. | Afterward his brother came out, that had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah. | And afterwards came out his brother, round whose hand was the scarlet thread; and they called his name Zerah. |
