John 21:1After this, Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. And he shewed himself after this manner. After these things, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself this way. After this, Jesus again showed Himself to the disciples. It was at the Lake of Tiberias. The circumstances were as follows.
John 21:2There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas, who is called Didymus, and Nathanael, who was of Cana of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples.Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.Simon Peter was with Thomas, called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zabdi, and two others of the Master's disciples.
John 21:3Simon Peter saith to them: I go a fishing. They say to him: We also come with thee. And they went forth, and entered into the ship: and that night they caught nothing.Simon Peter said to them, "I'm going fishing." They told him, "We are also coming with you." They immediately went forth, and entered into the boat. That night, they caught nothing.Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." "We will go too," said they. So they set out and went on board their boat; but they caught nothing that night.
John 21:4But when the morning was come, Jesus stood on the shore: yet the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. But when day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach, yet the disciples didn't know that it was Jesus. When, however, day was now dawning, Jesus stood on the beach, though the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
John 21:5Jesus therefore said to them: Children, have you any meat? They answered him: No.Jesus therefore said to them, "Children, have you anything to eat?" They answered him, "No."He called to them. "Children," He said, "have you any food there?" "No," they answered.
John 21:6He saith to them: Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you shall find. They cast therefore; and now they were not able to draw it, for the multitude of fishes. He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it in for the multitude of fish."Throw the net in on the right hand side," He said, "and you will find fish." So they threw the net in, and now they could scarcely drag it along for the quantity of fish.
John 21:7That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved, said to Peter: It is the Lord. Simon Peter, when he heard that it was the Lord, girt his coat about him, (for he was naked,) and cast himself into the sea. That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It's the Lord!" So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he wrapped his coat around him (for he was naked), and threw himself into the sea. This made the disciple whom Jesus loved say to Peter, "It is the Master." Simon Peter therefore, when he heard the words, "It is the Master," drew on his fisherman's shirt for he had not been wearing it put on his girdle, and sprang into the water.
John 21:8But the other disciples came in the ship, (for they were not far from the land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits away), dragging the net full of fish. But the rest of the disciples came in the small boat (for they were not far from land only about a hundred yards off), dragging the net full of fish.
John 21:9As soon then as they came to land, they saw hot coals lying, and a fish laid thereon, and bread. So when they got out on the land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. As soon as they landed, they saw a charcoal fire burning there, with fish broiling on it, and bread close by.
John 21:10Jesus saith to them: Bring hither of the fishes which you have now caught.Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have just caught."Jesus told them to fetch some of the fish which they had just caught.
John 21:11Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land, full of great fishes, one hundred and fifty-three. And although there were so many, the net was not broken.Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land, full of great fish, one hundred fifty-three; and even though there were so many, the net wasn't torn.So Simon Peter went on board the boat and drew the net ashore full of large fish, 153 in number; and yet, although there were so many, the net had not broken.
John 21:12Jesus saith to them: Come, and dine. And none of them who were at meat, durst ask him: Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.Jesus said to them, "Come and eat breakfast." None of the disciples dared inquire of him, "Who are you?" knowing that it was the Lord."Come this way and have breakfast," said Jesus. But not one of the disciples ventured to question Him as to who He was, for they felt sure that it was the Master.
John 21:13And Jesus cometh and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish in like manner. Then Jesus came and took the bread, gave it to them, and the fish likewise. Then Jesus came and took the bread and gave them some, and the fish in the same way.
John 21:14This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to his disciples, after he was risen from the dead. This is now the third time that Jesus was revealed to his disciples, after he had risen from the dead. This was now the third occasion on which Jesus showed Himself to the disciples after He had risen from among the dead.
John 21:15When therefore they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter: Simon son of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs. So when they had eaten their breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."When they had finished breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these others do?" "Yes, Master," was his answer; "you know that you are dear to me." "Then feed my lambs," replied Jesus.
John 21:16He saith to him again: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs. He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."Again a second time He asked him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" "Yes, Master," he said, "you know that you are dear to me." "Then be a shepherd to my sheep," He said.
John 21:17He said to him the third time: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved, because he had said to him the third time: Lovest thou me? And he said to him: Lord, thou knowest all things: thou knowest that I love thee. He said to him: Feed my sheep. He says to him the third time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?" Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time, "Do you have affection for me?" He said to him, "Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.A third time Jesus put the question: "Simon, son of John, am I dear to you?" It grieved Peter that Jesus asked him the third time, "Am I dear to you?" "Master," he replied, "you know everything, you can see that you are dear to me." "Then feed my much-loved sheep," said Jesus.
John 21:18Amen, amen I say to thee, when thou wast younger, thou didst gird thyself, and didst walk where thou wouldst. But when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and lead thee whither thou wouldst not. Most assuredly I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself, and walked where you wanted to. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you, and carry you where you don't want to go.""In most solemn truth I tell you that whereas, when you were young, you used to put on your girdle and walk whichever way you chose, when you have grown old you will stretch out your arms and some one else will put a girdle round you and carry you where you have no wish to go."
John 21:19And this he said, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had said this, he saith to him: Follow me.Now he said this, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. When he had said this, he said to him, "Follow me."This He said to indicate the kind of death by which that disciple would bring glory to God; and after speaking thus He said to him, "Follow me."
John 21:20Peter turning about, saw that disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned on his breast at supper, and said: Lord, who is he that shall betray thee? Then Peter, turning around, saw a disciple following. This was the disciple whom Jesus sincerely loved, the one who had also leaned on Jesus' breast at the supper and asked, "Lord, who is going to betray You?"Peter turned round and noticed the disciple whom Jesus loved following the one who at the supper had leaned back on His breast and had asked, "Master, who is it that is betraying you?"
John 21:21Him therefore when Peter had seen, he saith to Jesus: Lord, and what shall this man do?Peter seeing him, said to Jesus, "Lord, and what will this man do?"On seeing him, Peter asked Jesus, "And, Master, what about him?"
John 21:22Jesus saith to him: So I will have him to remain till I come, what is it to thee? follow thou me.Jesus said to him, "If I desire that he stay until I come, what is that to you? You follow me.""If I desire him to remain till I come," replied Jesus, "what concern is that of yours? You, yourself, must follow me."
John 21:23This saying therefore went abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die. And Jesus did not say to him: He should not die; but, So I will have him to remain till I come, what is it to thee? This saying therefore went forth among the brothers, that that disciple wouldn't die. Yet Jesus didn't say to him that he wouldn't die, but, "If I desire that he stay until I come, what is that to you?"Hence the report spread among the brethren that that disciple would never die. Yet Jesus did not say, "He is not to die," but, "If I desire him to remain till I come, what concern is that of yours?"
John 21:24This is that disciple who giveth testimony of these things, and hath written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. This is the disciple who testifies about these things, and wrote these things. We know that his witness is true. That is the disciple who gives his testimony as to these matters, and has written this history; and we know that his testimony is true.
John 21:25But there are also many other things which Jesus did; which, if they were written every one, the world itself, I think, would not be able to contain the books that should be written. There are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they would all be written, I suppose that even the world itself wouldn't contain the books that would be written. But there are also many other things which Jesus did so vast a number indeed that if they were all described in detail, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would have to be written.
