John 11:1Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister.And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sisterNow a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
John 11:2(And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailingAnd it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
John 11:3His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;`The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
John 11:4And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it.and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.`But when Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.
John 11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus.And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
John 11:6When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days.when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,When therefore he heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days in the place where he was.
John 11:7Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;`Then after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
John 11:8The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again?the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!`The disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
John 11:9Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
John 11:10But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.`But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.
John 11:11These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;`These things spake he: and after this he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
John 11:12His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;`The disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover.
John 11:13But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep.
John 11:14Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died;Then Jesus therefore said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
John 11:15And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him.and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;`And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
John 11:16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go we also, that we may die with him,`Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
John 11:17Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave.Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.
John 11:18(Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;
John 11:19And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
John 11:20Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home.Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house.
John 11:21Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;Martha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
John 11:22But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;`And even now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.
John 11:23Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.`Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
John 11:24Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day.Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;`Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
John 11:25Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live;
John 11:26And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die to the age;and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?
John 11:27She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.believest thou this?` she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.`She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, [even] he that cometh into the world.
John 11:28And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee.And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;`And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is her, and calleth thee.
John 11:29She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him.she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;And she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him.
John 11:30For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;(Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.)
John 11:31The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.`The Jews then who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going unto the tomb to weep there.
John 11:32When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;`Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
John 11:33Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself,Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews [also] weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
John 11:34And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.`Where have ye laid him?` they say to him, `Sir, come and see;`and said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see.
John 11:35And Jesus wept.Jesus wept.Jesus wept.
John 11:36The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him.The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!`The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!
John 11:37But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die?and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?`But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die?
John 11:38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
John 11:39Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days.Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;` the sister of him who hath died Martha saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;`Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time the body decayeth; for he hath been [dead] four days.
John 11:40Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?`Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
John 11:41They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me.
John 11:42And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said [it], that they may believe that Thou didst send me.`And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me.
John 11:43When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;`And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
John 11:44And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.`He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
John 11:45Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him.Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld that which he did, believed on him.
John 11:46But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done.but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.
John 11:47The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs?The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs.
John 11:48If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation.if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.`If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.
John 11:49But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing.and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything,But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
John 11:50Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.`nor do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
John 11:51And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,Now this he said not of himself: but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;
John 11:52And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed.and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God that are scattered abroad.
John 11:53From that day therefore they devised to put him to death.From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.
John 11:54Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples.Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed thence into the country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there he tarried with the disciples.
John 11:55And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves.And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;Now the passover of the Jews was at hand: and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, to purify themselves.
John 11:56They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you that he may not come to the feast?`They sought therefore for Jesus, and spake one with another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? That he will not come to the feast?
