2nd-Peter 3:1 | Behold this second epistle I write to you, my dearly beloved, in which I stir up by way of admonition your sincere mind: | This, now, beloved, a second letter to you I write, in both which I stir up your pure mind in reminding [you], | My loved ones, this is now my second letter to you, and in this as in the first, I am attempting to keep your true minds awake; |
2nd-Peter 3:2 | That you may be mindful of those words which I told you before from the holy prophets, and of your apostles, of the precepts of the Lord and Saviour. | to be mindful of the sayings said before by the holy prophets, and of the command of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour, | So that you may keep in mind the words of the holy prophets in the past, and the law of the Lord and Saviour which was given to you by his Apostles. |
2nd-Peter 3:3 | Knowing this first, that in the last days there shall come deceitful scoffers, walking after their own lusts, | this first knowing, that there shall come in the latter end of the days scoffers, according to their own desires going on, | Having first of all the knowledge that in the last days there will be men who, ruled by their evil desires, will make sport of holy things, |
2nd-Peter 3:4 | Saying: Where is his promise or his coming? for since the time that the fathers slept, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. | and saying, `Where is the promise of his presence? for since the fathers did fall asleep, all things so remain from the beginning of the creation;` | Saying, Where is the hope of his coming? From the death of the fathers till now everything has gone on as it was from the making of the world. |
2nd-Peter 3:5 | For this they are wilfully ignorant of, that the heavens were before, and the earth out of water, and through water, consisting by the word of God. | for this is unobserved by them willingly, that the heavens were of old, and the earth out of water and through water standing together by the word of God, | But in taking this view they put out of their minds the memory that in the old days there was a heaven, and an earth lifted out of the water and circled by water, by the word of God; |
2nd-Peter 3:6 | Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. | through which the then world, by water having been deluged, was destroyed; | And that the world which then was came to an end through the overflowing of the waters. |
2nd-Peter 3:7 | But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of the ungodly men. | and the present heavens and the earth, by the same word are treasured, for fire being kept to a day of judgment and destruction of the impious men. | But the present heaven and the present earth have been kept for destruction by fire, which is waiting for them on the day of the judging and destruction of evil men. |
2nd-Peter 3:8 | But of this one thing be not ignorant, my beloved, that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. | And this one thing let not be unobserved by you, beloved, that one day with the Lord [is] as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day; | But, my loved ones, keep in mind this one thing, that with the Lord one day is the same as a thousand years, and a thousand years are no more than one day. |
2nd-Peter 3:9 | The Lord delayeth not his promise, as some imagine, but dealeth patiently for your sake, not willing that any should perish, but that all should return to penance. | the Lord is not slow in regard to the promise, as certain count slowness, but is long-suffering to us, not counselling any to be lost but all to pass on to reformation, | The Lord is not slow in keeping his word, as he seems to some, but he is waiting in mercy for you, not desiring the destruction of any, but that all may be turned from their evil ways. |
2nd-Peter 3:10 | But the day of the Lord shall come as a thief, in which the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and the elements shall be melted with heat, and the earth and the works which are in it, shall be burnt up. | and it will come the day of the Lord as a thief in the night, in which the heavens with a rushing noise will pass away, and the elements with burning heat be dissolved, and earth and the works in it shall be burnt up. | But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; and in that day the heavens will be rolled up with a great noise, and the substance of the earth will be changed by violent heat, and the world and everything in it will be burned up. |
2nd-Peter 3:11 | Seeing then that all these things are to be dissolved, what manner of people ought you to be in holy conversation and godliness? | All these, then, being dissolved, what kind of persons doth it behove you to be in holy behaviours and pious acts? | Seeing then that all these things are coming to such an end, what sort of persons is it right for you to be, in all holy behaviour and righteousness, |
2nd-Peter 3:12 | Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of the Lord, by which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with the burning heat? | waiting for and hasting to the presence of the day of God, by which the heavens, being on fire, shall be dissolved, and the elements with burning heat shall melt; | Looking for and truly desiring the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will come to an end through fire, and the substance of the earth will be changed by the great heat? |
2nd-Peter 3:13 | But we look for new heavens and a new earth according to his promises, in which justice dwelleth. | and for new heavens and a new earth according to His promise we do wait, in which righteousness doth dwell; | But having faith in his word, we are looking for a new heaven and a new earth, which will be the resting-place of righteousness. |
2nd-Peter 3:14 | Wherefore, dearly beloved, waiting for these things, be diligent that you may be found before him unspotted and blameless in peace. | wherefore, beloved, these things waiting for, be diligent, spotless and unblameable, by Him to be found in peace, | For this reason, my loved ones, as you are looking for these things, take great care that when he comes you may be in peace before him, free from sin and every evil thing. |
2nd-Peter 3:15 | And account the longsuffering of our Lord, salvation; as also our most dear brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, hath written to you: | and the long-suffering of our Lord count ye salvation, according as also our beloved brother Paul according to the wisdom given to him did write to you, | And be certain that the long waiting of the Lord is for salvation; even as our brother Paul has said in his letters to you, from the wisdom which was given to him; |
2nd-Peter 3:16 | As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are certain things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. | as also in all the epistles, speaking in them concerning these things, among which things are certain hard to be understood, which the untaught and unstable do wrest, as also the other Writings, unto their own destruction. | And as he said in all his letters, which had to do with these things; in which are some hard sayings, so that, like the rest of the holy Writings, they are twisted by those who are uncertain and without knowledge, to the destruction of their souls. |
2nd-Peter 3:17 | You therefore, brethren, knowing these things before, take heed, lest being led aside by the error of the unwise, you fall from your own steadfastness. | Ye, then, beloved, knowing before, take heed, lest, together with the error of the impious being led away, ye may fall from your own stedfastness, | For this reason, my loved ones, having knowledge of these things before they take place, take care that you are not turned away by the error of the uncontrolled, so falling from your true faith. |
2nd-Peter 3:18 | But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and unto the day of eternity. Amen. | and increase ye in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; to him [is] the glory both now, and to the day of the age! Amen. | But be increased in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. May he have glory now and for ever. So be it. |
