Genesis 33:1 | And Jacob lifting up his eyes, saw Esau coming, and with him four hundred men: and he divided the children of Lia, and of Rachel, and of the two handmaids: | And Jacob lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, Esau is coming, and with him four hundred men; and he divideth the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two maid-servants; | Then Jacob, lifting up his eyes, saw Esau coming with his four hundred men. So he made a division of the children between Leah and Rachel and the two women-servants. |
Genesis 33:2 | And he put both the handmaids and their children foremost: and Lia and her children in the second place: and Rachel and Joseph last. | and he setteth the maid-servants and their children first, and Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last. | He put the servants and their children in front, Leah and her children after them, and Rachel and Joseph at the back. |
Genesis 33:3 | And he went forward and bowed down with his face to the ground seven times until his brother came near. | And he himself passed over before them, and boweth himself to the earth seven times, until his drawing nigh unto his brother, | And he himself, going before them, went down on his face to the earth seven times till he came near his brother. |
Genesis 33:4 | Then Esau ran to meet his brother, and embraced him: and clasping him fast about the neck, and kissing him, wept. | and Esau runneth to meet him, and embraceth him, and falleth on his neck, and kisseth him, and they weep; | Then Esau came running up to him, and folding him in his arms, gave him a kiss: and the two of them were overcome with weeping. |
Genesis 33:5 | And lifting up his eyes, he saw the women and their children, and said: What mean these? And do they belong to thee? He answered: They are the children which God hath given to me thy servant. | and he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the women and the children, and saith, `What [are] these to thee?` And he saith, `The children with whom God hath favoured thy servant.` | Then Esau, lifting up his eyes, saw the women and the children, and said, Who are these with you? And he said, The children whom God in his mercy has given to your servant. |
Genesis 33:6 | Then the handmaids and their children came near, and bowed themselves. | And the maid-servants draw nigh, they and their children, and bow themselves; | Then the servants and their children came near, and went down on their faces. |
Genesis 33:7 | Lia also with her children came near, and bowed down in like manner, and last of all Joseph and Rachel bowed down. | and Leah also draweth nigh, and her children, and they bow themselves; and afterwards Joseph hath drawn nigh with Rachel, and they bow themselves. | And Leah came near with her children, and then Joseph and Rachel, and they did the same. |
Genesis 33:8 | And Esau said: What are the droves that I met? He answered: That I might find favor before my lord. | And he saith, `What to thee [is] all this camp which I have met?` and he saith, `To find grace in the eyes of my lord.` | And he said, What were all those herds which I saw on the way? And Jacob said, They were an offering so that I might have grace in my lord's eyes. |
Genesis 33:9 | But he said: I have plenty, my brother, keep what is thine for thyself. | And Esau saith, `I have abundance, my brother, let it be to thyself that which thou hast.` | But Esau said, I have enough; keep what is yours, my brother, for yourself. |
Genesis 33:10 | And Jacob said: Do not so I beseech thee, but if I have found favor in thy eyes, receive a little present at my hands: for I have seen thy face, as if I should have seen the countenance of God: be gracious to me, | And Jacob saith, `Nay, I pray thee, if, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes, then thou hast received my present from my hand, because that I have seen thy face, as the seeing of the face of God, and thou art pleased with me; | And Jacob said, Not so; but if I have grace in your eyes, take them as a sign of my love, for I have seen your face as one may see the face of God, and you have been pleased with me. |
Genesis 33:11 | And take the blessing, which I have brought thee, and which God hath given me, who giveth all things. He took it with much ado at his brother's earnest pressing him, | receive, I pray thee, my blessing, which is brought to thee, because God hath favoured me, and because I have all [things];` and he presseth on him, and he receiveth, | Take my offering then, with my blessing; for God has been very good to me and I have enough: so at his strong request, he took it. |
Genesis 33:12 | And said: Let us go on together, and I will accompany thee in thy journey. | and saith, `Let us journey and go on, and I go on before thee.` | And he said, Let us go on our journey together, and I will go in front. |
Genesis 33:13 | And Jacob said: My lord, thou knowest that I have with me tender children, and sheep, and kine with young: which if I should cause to be overdriven, in one day all the flocks will die. | And he saith unto him, `My lord knoweth that the children [are] tender, and the suckling flock and the herd [are] with me; when they have beaten them one day, then hath all the flock died. | But Jacob said, My lord may see that the children are only small, and there are young ones in my flocks and herds: one day's over-driving will be the destruction of all the flock. |
Genesis 33:14 | May it please my lord to go before his servant: and I will follow softly after him, as I shall see my children to be able, until I come to my lord in Seir. | Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant, and I I lead on gently, according to the foot of the work which [is] before me, and to the foot of the children, until that I come unto my lord, to Seir.` | Do you, my lord, go on before your servant; I will come on slowly, at the rate at which the cattle and the children are able to go, till I come to my lord at Seir. |
Genesis 33:15 | Esau answered: I beseech thee, that some of the people at least, who are with me, may stay to accompany thee in the way. And he said: There is no necessity: I want nothing else but only to find favor, my lord, in thy sight. | And Esau saith, `Let me, I pray thee, place with thee some of the people who [are] with me;` and he said, `Why [is] this? I find grace in the eyes of my lord.` | And Esau said, Then keep some of my men with you. And he said, What need is there for that, if my lord is pleased with me? |
Genesis 33:16 | So Esau returned, that day, the way that he came, to Seir. | And turn back on that day doth Esau on his way to Seir; | So Esau, turning back that day, went on his way to Seir. |
Genesis 33:17 | And Jacob came to Socoth: where having built a house, and pitched tents, he called the name of the place Socoth, that is, Tents. | and Jacob hath journeyed to Succoth, and buildeth to himself a house, and for his cattle hath made booths, therefore hath he called the name of the place Succoth. | And Jacob went on to Succoth, where he made a house for himself and put up tents for his cattle: for this reason the place was named Succoth. |
Genesis 33:18 | And he passed over to Salem, a city of the Sichemites, which is in the land of Chanaan, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria: and he dwelt by the town: | And Jacob cometh in to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which [is] in the land of Canaan, in his coming from Padan-Aram, and encampeth before the city, | So Jacob came safely from Paddan-aram to the town of Shechem in the land of Canaan, and put up his tents near the town. |
Genesis 33:19 | And he bought that part of the field, in which he pitched his tents, of the children of Hemor, the father of Sichem for a hundred lambs. | and he buyeth the portion of the field where he hath stretched out his tent, from the hand of the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred kesitah; | And for a hundred bits of money he got from the children of Hamor, the builder of Shechem, the field in which he had put up his tents. |
Genesis 33:20 | And raising an altar there, he invoked upon it the most mighty God of Israel. | and he setteth up there an altar, and proclaimeth at it God the God of Israel. | And there he put up an altar, naming it El, the God of Israel. |
