James 4:1From whence are wars and contentions among you? Are they not hence, from your concupiscences, which war in your members?Whence [are] wars and fightings among you? not thence out of your passions, that are as soldiers in your members? What is the cause of wars and fighting among you? is it not in your desires which are at war in your bodies?
James 4:2You covet, and have not: you kill, and envy, and can not obtain. You contend and war, and you have not, because you ask not.ye desire, and ye have not; ye murder, and are zealous, and are not able to attain; ye fight and war, and ye have not, because of your not asking; You are burning with desire, and have not your desire, so you put men to death; you are full of envy, and you are not able to get your desire, so you are fighting and making war; you have not your desire, because you do not make request for it.
James 4:3You ask, and receive not; because you ask amiss: that you may consume it on your concupiscences.ye ask, and ye receive not, because evilly ye ask, that in your pleasures ye may spend [it].You make your request but you do not get it, because your request has been wrongly made, desiring the thing only so that you may make use of it for your pleasure.
James 4:4Adulterers, know you not that the friendship of this world is the enemy of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of this world, becometh an enemy of God.Adulterers and adulteresses! have ye not known that friendship of the world is enmity with God? whoever, then, may counsel to be a friend of the world, an enemy of God he is set.O you who are false to God, do you not see that the friends of this world are not God's friends? Every man desiring to be a friend of this world makes himself a hater of God.
James 4:5Or do you think that the scripture saith in vain: To envy doth the spirit covet which dwelleth in you?Do ye think that emptily the Writing saith, `To envy earnestly desireth the spirit that did dwell in us,`Or does it seem to you that it is for nothing that the holy Writings say, The spirit which God put into our hearts has a strong desire for us?
James 4:6But he giveth greater grace. Wherefore he saith: God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.and greater grace he doth give, wherefore he saith, `God against proud ones doth set Himself up, and to lowly ones He doth give grace?`But he gives more grace. So that the Writings say, God is against the men of pride, but he gives grace to those who make themselves low before him.
James 4:7Be subject therefore to God, but resist the devil, and he will fly from you.be subject, then, to God; stand up against the devil, and he will flee from you;For this cause be ruled by God; but make war on the Evil One and he will be put to flight before you.
James 4:8Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners: and purify your hearts, ye double minded.draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you; cleanse hands, ye sinners! and purify hearts, ye two-souled!Come near to God and he will come near to you. Make your hands clean, you evil-doers; put away deceit from your hearts, you false in mind.
James 4:9Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into sorrow.be exceeding afflicted, and mourn, and weep, let your laughter to mourning be turned, and the joy to heaviness;Be troubled, with sorrow and weeping; let your laughing be turned to sorrow and your joy to grief.
James 4:10Be humbled in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.be made low before the Lord, and He shall exalt you.Make yourselves low in the eyes of the Lord and you will be lifted up by him.
James 4:11Detract not one another, my brethren. He that detracteth his brother, or he that judgeth his brother, detracteth the law, and judgeth the law. But if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.Speak not one against another, brethren; he who is speaking against a brother, and is judging his brother, doth speak against law, and doth judge law, and if law thou dost judge, thou art not a doer of law but a judge;Do not say evil against one another, my brothers. He who says evil against his brother or makes himself his brother's judge, says evil against the law and is judging the law: and in judging the law you become, not a doer of the law but a judge.
James 4:12There is one lawgiver, and judge, that is able to destroy and to deliver.one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy; thou who art thou that dost judge the other? There is only one judge and law-giver, even he who has the power of salvation and of destruction; but who are you to be your neighbour's judge?
James 4:13But who art thou that judgest thy neighbour? Behold, now you that say: To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and there we will spend a year, and will traffic, and make our gain.Go, now, ye who are saying, `To-day and to-morrow we will go on to such a city, and will pass there one year, and traffic, and make gain;`How foolish it is to say, Today or tomorrow we will go into this town, and be there for a year and do business there and get wealth:
James 4:14Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow.who do not know the thing of the morrow; for what is your life? for it is a vapour that is appearing for a little, and then is vanishing; When you are not certain what will take place tomorrow. What is your life? It is a mist, which is seen for a little time and then is gone.
James 4:15For what is your life? It is a vapour which appeareth for a little while, and afterwards shall vanish away. For that you should say: If the Lord will, and if we shall live, we will do this or that.instead of your saying, `If the Lord may will, we shall live, and do this or that;`But the right thing to say would be, If it is the Lord's pleasure and if we are still living, we will do this and that.
James 4:16But now you rejoice in your arrogancies. All such rejoicing is wicked.and now ye glory in your pride; all such glorying is evil; But now you go on glorying in your pride: and all such glorying is evil.
James 4:17To him therefore who knoweth to do good, and doth it not, to him it is sin.to him, then, knowing to do good, and not doing, sin it is to him.The man who has knowledge of how to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
