John 5:1 | After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, | After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
John 5:2 | Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches. | and there is in Jerusalem by the sheep-[gate] a pool that is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches, | Now in Jerusalem near the sheep-market there is a public bath which in Hebrew is named Beth-zatha. It has five doorways. |
John 5:3 | In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered; waiting for the moving of the water. | in these were lying a great multitude of the ailing, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water, | In these doorways there were a great number of people with different diseases: some unable to see, some without the power of walking, some with wasted bodies. |
John 5:4 | And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water, was made whole, of whatsoever infirmity he lay under. | for a messenger at a set time was going down in the pool, and was troubling the water, the first then having gone in after the troubling of the water, became whole of whatever sickness he was held. | [] |
John 5:5 | And there was a certain man there, that had been eight and thirty years under his infirmity. | and there was a certain man there being in ailment thirty and eight years, | One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. |
John 5:6 | Him when Jesus had seen lying, and knew that he had been now a long time, he saith to him: Wilt thou be made whole? | him Jesus having seen lying, and having known that he is already a long time, he saith to him, `Dost thou wish to become whole?` | When Jesus saw him there on the floor it was clear to him that he had been now a long time in that condition, and so he said to the man, Is it your desire to get well? |
John 5:7 | The infirm man answered him: Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pond. For whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me. | The ailing man answered him, `Sir, I have no man, that, when the water may be troubled, he may put me into the pool, and while I am coming, another doth go down before me.` | The ill man said in answer, Sir, I have nobody to put me into the bath when the water is moving; and while I am on the way down some other person gets in before me. |
John 5:8 | Jesus saith to him: Arise, take up thy bed, and walk. | Jesus saith to him, `Rise, take up thy couch, and be walking;` | Jesus said to him, Get up, take your bed and go. |
John 5:9 | And immediately the man was made whole: and he took up his bed, and walked. And it was the sabbath that day. | and immediately the man became whole, and he took up his couch, and was walking, and it was a sabbath on that day, | And the man became well straight away, and took up his bed and went. Now that day was the Sabbath. |
John 5:10 | The Jews therefore said to him that was healed: It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed. | the Jews then said to him that hath been healed, `It is a sabbath; it is not lawful to thee to take up the couch.` | So the Jews said to the man who had been made well, It is the Sabbath; and it is against the law for you to take up your bed. |
John 5:11 | He answered them: He that made me whole, he said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk. | He answered them, `He who made me whole that one said to me, Take up thy couch, and be walking;` | He said to them, But he who made me well, said to me, Take up your bed and go. |
John 5:12 | They asked him therefore: Who is that man who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? | they questioned him, then, `Who is the man who is saying to thee, Take up thy couch and be walking?` | Then they put to him the question: Who is the man who said to you, Take it up and go? |
John 5:13 | But he who was healed, knew not who it was; for Jesus went aside from the multitude standing in the place. | But he that was healed had not known who he is, for Jesus did move away, a multitude being in the place. | Now he who had been made well had no knowledge who it was, Jesus having gone away because of the number of people who were in that place. |
John 5:14 | Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee. | After these things, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, `Lo, thou hast become whole; sin no more, lest something worse may happen to thee.` | After a time Jesus came across him in the Temple and said to him, See, you are well and strong; do no more sin for fear a worse thing comes to you. |
John 5:15 | The man went his way, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had made him whole. | The man went away, and told the Jews that it is Jesus who made him whole, | The man went away and said to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. |
John 5:16 | Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. | and because of this were the Jews persecuting Jesus, and seeking to kill him, because these things he was doing on a sabbath. | And for this reason the Jews were turned against Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. |
John 5:17 | But Jesus answered them: My Father worketh until now; and I work. | And Jesus answered them, `My Father till now doth work, and I work;` | But his answer was: My Father is still working even now, and so I am working. |
John 5:18 | Hereupon therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he did not only break the sabbath, but also said God was his Father, making himself equal to God. | because of this, then, were the Jews seeking the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the sabbath, but he also called God his own Father, making himself equal to God. | For this cause the Jews had an even greater desire to put Jesus to death, because not only did he not keep the Sabbath but he said God was his Father, so making himself equal with God. |
John 5:19 | Then Jesus answered, and said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you, the Son cannot do any thing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doth, these the Son also doth in like manner. | Jesus therefore responded and said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything of himself, if he may not see the Father doing anything; for whatever things He may do, these also the Son in like manner doth; | So Jesus made answer and said, Truly I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything himself; he is able to do only what he sees the Father doing; whatever the Father does the Son does it in the same way. |
John 5:20 | For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things which himself doth: and greater works than these will he shew him, that you may wonder. | for the Father doth love the Son, and doth shew to him all things that He himself doth; and greater works than these He will shew him, that ye may wonder. | For the Father has love for the Son and lets him see everything which he does: and he will let him see greater works than these so that you may be full of wonder. |
John 5:21 | For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and giveth life: so the Son also giveth life to whom he will. | `For, as the Father doth raise the dead, and doth make alive, so also the Son doth make alive whom he willeth; | In the same way, as the Father gives life to the dead, even so the Son gives life to those to whom he is pleased to give it. |
John 5:22 | For neither doth the Father judge any man, but hath given all judgment to the Son. | for neither doth the Father judge any one, but all the judgment He hath given to the Son, | The Father is not the judge of men, but he has given all decisions into the hands of the Son; |
John 5:23 | That all men may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father, who hath sent him. | that all may honour the Son according as they honour the Father; he who is not honouring the Son, doth not honour the Father who sent him. | So that all men may give honour to the Son even as they give honour to the Father. He who gives no honour to the Son gives no honour to the Father who sent him. |
John 5:24 | Amen, amen I say unto you, that he who heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath life everlasting; and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life. | `Verily, verily, I say to you He who is hearing my word, and is believing Him who sent me, hath life age-during, and to judgment he doth not come, but hath passed out of the death to the life. | Truly I say to you, The man whose ears are open to my word and who has faith in him who sent me, has eternal life; he will not be judged, but has come from death into life. |
John 5:25 | Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. | `Verily, verily, I say to you There cometh an hour, and it now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and those having heard shall live; | Truly I say to you, The time is coming, it has even now come, when the voice of the Son of God will come to the ears of the dead, and those hearing it will have life. |
John 5:26 | For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given the Son also to have life in himself: | for, as the Father hath life in himself, so He gave also to the Son to have life in himself, | For even as the Father has life in himself, so he has given to the Son to have life in himself. |
John 5:27 | And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man. | and authority He gave him also to do judgment, because he is Son of Man. | And he has given him authority to be judge because he is the Son of man. |
John 5:28 | Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh, wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God. | `Wonder not at this, because there doth come an hour in which all those in the tombs shall hear his voice, | Do not be surprised at this: for the time is coming when his voice will come to all who are in the place of the dead, |
John 5:29 | And they that have done good things, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment. | and they shall come forth; those who did the good things to a rising again of life, and those who practised the evil things to a rising again of judgment. | And they will come out; those who have done good, into the new life; and those who have done evil, to be judged. |
John 5:30 | I cannot of myself do any thing. As I hear, so I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me. | `I am not able of myself to do anything; according as I hear I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me. | Of myself I am unable to do anything: as the voice comes to me so I give a decision: and my decision is right because I have no desire to do what is pleasing to myself, but only what is pleasing to him who sent me. |
John 5:31 | If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. | `If I testify concerning myself, my testimony is not true; | If I gave witness about myself, my witness would not be true. |
John 5:32 | There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. | another there is who is testifying concerning me, and I have known that the testimony that he doth testify concerning me is true; | There is another who gives witness about me and I am certain that the witness he gives about me is true. |
John 5:33 | You sent to John, and he gave testimony to the truth. | ye have sent unto John, and he hath testified to the truth. | You sent to John and he gave true witness. |
John 5:34 | But I receive not testimony from man: but I say these things, that you may be saved. | `But I do not receive testimony from man, but these things I say that ye may be saved; | But I have no need of a man's witness: I only say these things so that you may have salvation. |
John 5:35 | He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. | he was the burning and shining lamp, and ye did will to be glad, for an hour, in his light. | He was a burning and shining light, and for a time you were ready to be happy in his light. |
John 5:36 | But I have a greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to perfect; the works themselves, which I do, give testimony of me, that the Father hath sent me. | `But I have the testimony greater than John`s, for the works that the Father gave me, that I might finish them, the works themselves that I do, they testify concerning me, that the Father hath sent me. | But the witness which I have is greater than that of John: the work which the Father has given me to do, the very work which I am now doing, is a witness that the Father has sent me. |
John 5:37 | And the Father himself who hath sent me, hath given testimony of me: neither have you heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. | `And the Father who sent me Himself hath testified concerning me; ye have neither heard His voice at any time, nor His appearance have ye seen; | And the Father himself who sent me has given witness about me. Not one of you has ever given ear to his voice; his form you have not seen. |
John 5:38 | And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him you believe not. | and His word ye have not remaining in you, because whom He sent, him ye do not believe. | And you have not kept his word in your hearts, because you have not faith in him whom he has sent. |
John 5:39 | Search the scriptures, for you think in them to have life everlasting; and the same are they that give testimony of me. | `Ye search the Writings, because ye think in them to have life age-during, and these are they that are testifying concerning me; | You make search in the holy Writings, in the belief that through them you get eternal life; and it is those Writings which give witness about me. |
John 5:40 | And you will not come to me that you may have life. | and ye do not will to come unto me, that ye may have life; | And still you have no desire to come to me so that you may have life. |
John 5:41 | I receive glory not from men. | glory from man I do not receive, | I do not take honour from men; |
John 5:42 | But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you. | but I have known you, that the love of God ye have not in yourselves. | But I have knowledge of you that you have no love for God in your hearts. |
John 5:43 | I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive. | `I have come in the name of my Father, and ye do not receive me; if another may come in his own name, him ye will receive; | I have come in my Father's name, and your hearts are not open to me. If another comes with no other authority but himself, you will give him your approval. |
John 5:44 | How can you believe, who receive glory one from another: and the glory which is from God alone, you do not seek? | how are ye able ye to believe, glory from one another receiving, and the glory that [is] from God alone ye seek not? | How is it possible for you to have faith while you take honour one from another and have no desire for the honour which comes from the only God? |
John 5:45 | Think not that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one that accuseth you, Moses, in whom you trust. | `Do not think that I will accuse you unto the Father; there is who is accusing you, Moses in whom ye have hoped; | Put out of your minds the thought that I will say things against you to the Father: the one who says things against you is Moses, on whom you put your hopes. |
John 5:46 | For if you did believe Moses, you would perhaps believe me also; for he wrote of me. | for if ye were believing Moses, ye would have been believing me, for he wrote concerning me; | If you had belief in Moses you would have belief in me; for his writings are about me. |
John 5:47 | But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words? | but if his writings ye believe not, how shall ye believe my sayings?` | If you have no belief in his writings, how will you have belief in my words? |
