Luke 24:1 | And on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared. | And on the first of the sabbaths, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, bearing the spices they made ready, and certain [others] with them, | But on the first day of the week, at dawn, they came to the place where his body had been put, taking the spices which they had got ready. |
Luke 24:2 | And they found the stone rolled back from the sepulchre. | and they found the stone having been rolled away from the tomb, | And they saw that the stone had been rolled away. |
Luke 24:3 | And going in, they found not the body of the Lord Jesus. | and having gone in, they found not the body of the Lord Jesus. | And they went in, but the body of the Lord Jesus was not there. |
Luke 24:4 | And it came to pass, as they were astonished in their mind at this, behold, two men stood by them, in shining apparel. | And it came to pass, while they are perplexed about this, that lo, two men stood by them in glittering apparel, | And while they were in doubt about it, they saw two men in shining clothing by them: |
Luke 24:5 | And as they were afraid, and bowed down their countenance towards the ground, they said unto them: Why seek you the living with the dead? | and on their having become afraid, and having inclined the face to the earth, they said to them, `Why do ye seek the living with the dead? | And while their faces were bent down to the earth in fear, these said to them, Why are you looking for the living among the dead? |
Luke 24:6 | He is not here, but is risen. Remember how he spoke unto you, when he was in Galilee, | he is not here, but was raised; remember how he spake to you, being yet in Galilee, | He is not here, he has come back to life: have in mind what he said to you when he was still in Galilee, saying, |
Luke 24:7 | Saying: The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. | saying It behoveth the Son of Man to be delivered up to the hands of sinful men, and to be crucified, and the third day to rise again.` | The Son of man will be given up into the hands of evil-doers, and be put to death on the cross, and on the third day he will come back to life. |
Luke 24:8 | And they remembered his words. | And they remembered his sayings, | And his words came back into their minds, |
Luke 24:9 | And going back from the sepulchre, they told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest. | and having turned back from the tomb told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest. | And they went away from that place and gave an account of all these things to the eleven disciples and all the others. |
Luke 24:10 | And it was Mary Magdalen, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women that were with them, who told these things to the apostles. | And it was the Magdalene Mary, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women with them, who told unto the apostles these things, | Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James: and the other women with them said these things to the Apostles. |
Luke 24:11 | And these words seemed to them as idle tales; and they did not believe them. | and their sayings appeared before them as idle talk, and they were not believing them. | But these words seemed foolish to them, and they had no belief in them. |
Luke 24:12 | But Peter rising up, ran to the sepulchre, and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths laid by themselves; and went away wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. | And Peter having risen, did run to the tomb, and having stooped down he seeth the linen clothes lying alone, and he went away to his own home, wondering at that which was come to pass. | But Peter got up and went to the place where the body had been put, and looking in he saw nothing but the linen cloths, and he went to his house full of wonder at what had taken place. |
Luke 24:13 | And behold, two of them went, the same day, to a town which was sixty furlongs from Jerusalem, named Emmaus. | And, lo, two of them were going on during that day to a village, distant sixty furlongs from Jerusalem, the name of which [is] Emmaus, | And then, two of them, on that very day, were going to a little town named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. |
Luke 24:14 | And they talked together of all these things which had happened. | and they were conversing with one another about all these things that have happened. | And they were talking together about all those things which had taken place. |
Luke 24:15 | And it came to pass, that while they talked and reasoned with themselves, Jesus himself also drawing near, went with them. | And it came to pass in their conversing and reasoning together, that Jesus himself, having come nigh, was going on with them, | And while they were talking and questioning together, Jesus himself came near and went with them. |
Luke 24:16 | But their eyes were held, that they should not know him. | and their eyes were holden so as not to know him, | But their eyes were not open that they might have knowledge of him. |
Luke 24:17 | And he said to them: What are these discourses that you hold one with another as you walk, and are sad? | and he said unto them, `What [are] these words that ye exchange with one another, walking, and ye are sad?` | And he said to them, What are you talking about together while you go? |
Luke 24:18 | And the one of them, whose name was Cleophas, answering, said to him: Art thou only a stranger to Jerusalem, and hast not known the things that have been done there in these days? | And the one, whose name was Cleopas, answering, said unto him, `Art thou alone such a stranger in Jerusalem, that thou hast not known the things that came to pass in it in these days?` | Then stopping, and looking sadly at him, one of them, named Cleopas, said to him, Are you the only man living in Jerusalem who has not had news of the things which have taken place there at this time? |
Luke 24:19 | To whom he said: What things? And they said: Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in work and word before God and all the people; | And he said to them, `What things?` And they said to him, `The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who became a man a prophet powerful in deed and word, before God and all the people, | And he said to them, What things? And they said, The things to do with Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, great in his acts and his words, before God and all the people: |
Luke 24:20 | And how our chief priests and princes delivered him to be condemned to death, and crucified him. | how also the chief priests and our rulers did deliver him up to a judgment of death, and crucified him; | And how the chief priests and our rulers gave him up to be put to death on the cross. |
Luke 24:21 | But we hoped, that it was he that should have redeemed Israel: and now besides all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. | and we were hoping that he it is who is about to redeem Israel, and also with all these things, this third day is passing to-day, since these things happened. | But we were hoping that he would be the Saviour of Israel. In addition to all this he has now let three days go by from the time when these things took place; |
Luke 24:22 | Yea and certain women also of our company affrighted us, who before it was light, were at the sepulchre, | `And certain women of ours also astonished us, coming early to the tomb, | And certain women among us gave us cause for wonder, for they went early to the place where his body had been put, |
Luke 24:23 | And not finding his body, came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who say that he is alive. | and not having found his body, they came, saying also to have seen an apparition of messengers, who say he is alive, | And it was not there; then they came saying that they had seen a vision of angels who said that he was living. |
Luke 24:24 | And some of our people went to the sepulchre, and found it so as the women had said, but him they found not. | and certain of those with us went away unto the tomb, and found as even the women said, and him they saw not.` | And some of those who were with us went to the place, and saw that it was as the women had said, but him they did not see. |
Luke 24:25 | Then he said to them: O foolish, and slow of heart to believe in all things which the prophets have spoken. | And he said unto them, `O inconsiderate and slow in heart, to believe on all that the prophets spake! | And he said, O foolish men! how slow you are to give belief to what the prophets have said. |
Luke 24:26 | Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and so to enter into his glory? | Was it not behoving the Christ these things to suffer, and to enter into his glory?` | Was it not necessary for the Christ to go through these things, and to come into his glory? |
Luke 24:27 | And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures, the things that were concerning him. | and having begun from Moses, and from all the prophets, he was expounding to them in all the Writings the things about himself. | And he made clear to them all the things in the Writings, from Moses and from all the prophets, which had to do with himself. |
Luke 24:28 | And they drew night to the town, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go farther. | And they came nigh to the village whither they were going, and he made an appearance of going on further, | And they came near the town to which they were going, and he seemed as if he was going on; |
Luke 24:29 | But they constrained him; saying: Stay with us, because it is towards evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in with them. | and they constrained him, saying, `Remain with us, for it is toward evening,` and the day did decline, and he went in to remain with them. | But they kept him back, saying, Do not go, for evening is near, the day is almost gone. And he went in with them. |
Luke 24:30 | And it came to pass, whilst he was at table with them, he took bread, and blessed, and brake, and gave to them. | And it came to pass, in his reclining (at meat) with them, having taken the bread, he blessed, and having broken, he was giving to them, | And when he was seated with them at table, he took the bread, and said words of blessing and, making division of it, he gave it to them. |
Luke 24:31 | And their eyes were opened, and they knew him: and he vanished out of their sight. | and their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he became unseen by them. | And then their eyes were open, and they had knowledge of him, but he went from their view. |
Luke 24:32 | And they said one to the other: Was not our heart burning within us, whilst he spoke in this way, and opened to us the scriptures? | And they said one to another, `Was not our heart burning within us, as he was speaking to us in the way, and as he was opening up to us the Writings?` | And they said to one another, Were not our hearts burning in us while he was talking to us on the way, making clear to us the holy Writings? |
Luke 24:33 | And rising up, the same hour, they went back to Jerusalem: and they found the eleven gathered together, and those that were staying with them, | And they, having risen up the same hour, turned back to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven, and those with them, | And that very hour they got up and went back to Jerusalem, where the eleven and the others had come together. |
Luke 24:34 | Saying: The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. | saying `The Lord was raised indeed, and was seen by Simon;` | And they said to them, The Lord has truly come back to life again, and Simon has seen him. |
Luke 24:35 | And they told what things were done in the way; and how they knew him in the breaking of the bread. | and they were telling the things in the way, and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread, | And they gave an account of the things which had taken place on the way, and how, when he gave them bread, they had knowledge of him. |
Luke 24:36 | Now whilst they were speaking these things, Jesus stood in the midst of them, and saith to them: Peace be to you; it is I, fear not. | and as they are speaking these things, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith to them, `Peace to you;` | And while they were saying these things, he himself was among them, and said to them, Peace be with you! |
Luke 24:37 | But they being troubled and frightened, supposed that they saw a spirit. | and being amazed, and becoming affrighted, they were thinking themselves to see a spirit. | But they were full of fear, being of the opinion that they were seeing a spirit. |
Luke 24:38 | And he said to them: Why are you troubled, and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? | And he said to them, `Why are ye troubled? and wherefore do reasonings come up in your hearts? | And he said to them, Why are you troubled, and why are your hearts full of doubt? |
Luke 24:39 | See my hands and feet, that it is I myself; handle, and see: for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as you see me to have. | see my hands and my feet, that I am he; handle me and see, because a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me having.` | See; my hands and my feet: it is I myself; put your hands on me and make certain; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have. |
Luke 24:40 | And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and feet. | And having said this, he shewed to them the hands and the feet, | And when he had said this, he let them see his hands and his feet. |
Luke 24:41 | But while they yet believed not, and wondered for joy, he said: Have you any thing to eat? | and while they are not believing from the joy, and wondering, he said to them, `Have ye anything here to eat?` | And because, for joy and wonder, they were still in doubt, he said to them, Have you any food here? |
Luke 24:42 | And they offered him a piece of a broiled fish, and a honeycomb. | and they gave to him part of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb, | And they gave him a bit of cooked fish. |
Luke 24:43 | And when he had eaten before them, taking the remains, he gave to them. | and having taken, he did eat before them, | And before their eyes he took a meal. |
Luke 24:44 | And he said to them: These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. | and he said to them, `These [are] the words that I spake unto you, being yet with you, that it behoveth to be fulfilled all the things that are written in the Law of Moses, and the Prophets, and the Psalms, about me.` | And he said to them, These are the words which I said to you when I was still with you, how it was necessary for all the things which are in the writings of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms about me, to be put into effect. |
Luke 24:45 | Then he opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures. | Then opened he up their understanding to understand the Writings, | Then he made the holy Writings clear to their minds. |
Luke 24:46 | And he said to them: Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead, the third day: | and he said to them `Thus it hath been written, and thus it was behoving the Christ to suffer, and to rise out of the dead the third day, | And he said to them, So it is in the Writings that the Christ would undergo death, and come back to life again on the third day; |
Luke 24:47 | And that penance and remission of sins should be preached in his name, unto all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. | and reformation and remission of sins to be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem: | And that teaching about a change of heart and forgiveness of sins is to be given to Jerusalem first and to all nations in his name. |
Luke 24:48 | And you are witnesses of these things. | and ye ye are witnesses of these things. | You are witnesses of these things. |
Luke 24:49 | And I send the promise of my Father upon you: but stay you in the city till you be endued with power from on high. | `And, lo, I do send the promise of my Father upon you, but ye abide ye in the city of Jerusalem till ye be clothed with power from on high.` | And now I will send to you what my father has undertaken to give you, but do not go from the town, till the power from heaven comes to you. |
Luke 24:50 | And he led them out as far as Bethania: and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. | And he led them forth without unto Bethany, and having lifted up his hands he did bless them, | And he took them out till they were near Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he gave them a blessing. |
Luke 24:51 | And it came to pass, whilst he blessed them, he departed from them, and was carried up to heaven. | and it came to pass, in his blessing them, he was parted from them, and was borne up to the heaven; | And while he was doing so, he went from them and was taken up into heaven. |
Luke 24:52 | And they adoring went back into Jerusalem with great joy. | and they, having bowed before him, did turn back to Jerusalem with great joy, | And they gave him worship and went back to Jerusalem with great joy. |
Luke 24:53 | And they were always in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen. | and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen. | And they were in the Temple at all times, giving praise to God. |
