Malachi 1:1 | The burden of the word of the Lord to Israel by the hand of Malachias. | The burden of a word of Jehovah unto Israel by the hand of Malachi: | The word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi. |
Malachi 1:2 | I have loved you, saith the Lord: and you have said: Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau brother to Jacob, saith the Lord, and I have loved Jacob, | I have loved you, said Jehovah, And ye have said, `In what hast Thou loved us?` | You have been loved by me, says the Lord. But you say, Where was your love for us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? says the Lord: but Jacob was loved by me, |
Malachi 1:3 | But have hated Esau? and I have made his mountains a wilderness, and given his inheritance to the dragons of the desert. | Is not Esau Jacob`s brother? an affirmation of Jehovah, And I love Jacob, and Esau I have hated, And I make his mountains a desolation, And his inheritance for dragons of a wilderness. | And Esau was hated, and I sent destruction on his mountains, and gave his heritage to the beasts of the waste land. |
Malachi 1:4 | But if Edom shall say: We are destroyed, but we will return and build up what hath been destroyed: thus saith the Lord of hosts: They shall build up, and I will throw down: and they shall be called the borders of wickedness, and the people with whom the Lord is angry for ever. | Because Edom saith, `We have been made poor, And we turn back and we build the wastes,` Thus said Jehovah of Hosts: They do build, and I do destroy, And [men] have called to them, `O region of wickedness,` `O people whom Jehovah defied to the age.` | Though Edom says, We are crushed down but we will come back, building up the waste places; this is what the Lord of armies has said: They may put up buildings, but I will have them pulled down; and they will be named The land of evil-doing, and The people against whom the Lord keeps his wrath for ever. |
Malachi 1:5 | And your eyes shall see, and you shall say: The Lord be magnified upon the border of Israel. | And your eyes do see, and ye say, `Magnified is Jehovah beyond the border of Israel, | And your eyes will see it; and you will say, The Lord is great even outside the limits of Israel. |
Malachi 1:6 | The son honoureth the father, and the servant his master: if then I be a father, where is my honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord of hosts. | A son honoureth a father, and a servant his master. And if I [am] a father, where [is] Mine honour? And if I [am] a master, where [is] My fear? Said Jehovah of Hosts to you, O priests, despising My name! And ye have said: `In what have we despised Thy name?` | A son gives honour to his father, and a servant has fear of his master: if then I am a father, where is my honour? and if I am a master, where is the fear of me? says the Lord of armies to you, O priests, who give no value to my name. And you say, How have we not given value to your name? |
Malachi 1:7 | To you, O priests, that despise my name, and have said: Wherein have we despised thy name? You offer polluted bread upon my altar, and you say: Wherein have we polluted thee? In that you say: The table of the Lord is contemptible. | Ye are bringing nigh on Mine altar polluted bread, And ye have said: `In what have we polluted Thee?` In your saying: `The table of Jehovah it [is] despicable,` | You put unclean bread on my altar. And you say, How have we made it unclean? By your saying, The table of the Lord is of no value. |
Malachi 1:8 | If you offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if you offer the lame and the sick, is it not evil? offer it to thy prince, if he will be pleased with it, or if he will regard thy face, saith the Lord of hosts. | And when ye bring nigh the blind for sacrifice, `There is no evil,` And when ye bring nigh the lame and sick, `There is no evil;` Bring it near, I pray thee, to thy governor Doth he accept thee? or doth he lift up thy face? Said Jehovah of Hosts. | And when you give what is blind for an offering, it is no evil! and when you give what is damaged and ill, it is no evil! Give it now to your ruler; will he be pleased with you, or will you have his approval? says the Lord of armies. |
Malachi 1:9 | And now beseech ye the face of God, that he may have mercy on you, (for by your hand hath this been done,) if by any means he will receive your faces, saith the Lord of hosts. | And now, appease, I pray thee, the face of God, And He doth favour us; From your own hand hath this been, Doth He accept of you appearances? Said Jehovah of Hosts. | And now, make request for the grace of God so that he may have mercy on us: this has been your doing: will he give his approval to any of you? says the Lord of armies. |
Malachi 1:10 | Who is there among you, that will shut the doors, and will kindle the fire on my altar gratis? I have no pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts: and I will not receive a gift of your hand. | Who [is] even among you, And he shutteth the two-leaved doors? Yea, ye do not kindle Mine altar for nought, I have no pleasure in you, said Jehovah of Hosts, And a present I do not accept of your hand. | If only there was one among you who would see that the doors were shut, so that you might not put a light to the fire on my altar for nothing! I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of armies, and I will not take an offering from your hands. |
Malachi 1:11 | For from the rising of the sun even to the going down, my name is great among the Gentiles, and in every place there is sacrifice, and there is offered to my name a clean oblation: for my name is great among the Gentiles, saith the Lord of hosts. | For, from the rising of the sun to its going in, Great [is] My name among nations, And in every place perfume is brought nigh to My name, and a pure present, For great [is] My name among nations, Said Jehovah of Hosts. | For, from the coming up of the sun till its going down, my name is great among the Gentiles; and in every place the smell of burning flesh is offered to my name, and a clean offering: for my name is great among the Gentiles, says the Lord of armies. |
Malachi 1:12 | And you have profaned it in that you say: The table of the Lord is defiled: and that which is laid thereupon is contemptible with the fire that devoureth it. | And ye are polluting it in your saying, `The table of Jehovah it is polluted, As to its fruit despicable is its food.` | But you make it unholy by saying, The Lord's table has become unclean, and his food is of no value. |
Malachi 1:13 | And you have said: Behold of our labour, and you puffed it away, saith the Lord of hosts, and you brought in of rapine the lame, and the sick, and brought in an offering: shall I accept it at your hands, saith the Lord? | And ye have said, `Lo, what a weariness,` And ye have puffed at it, said Jehovah of Hosts, And ye have brought in plunder, And the lame and the sick, And ye have brought in the present! Do I accept it from your hand? said Jehovah. | And you say, See, what a weariness it is! and you let out your breath at it, says the Lord of armies; and you have given what has been cut about by beasts, and what is damaged in its feet and ill; this is the offering you give: will this be pleasing to me from your hands? says the Lord. |
Malachi 1:14 | Cursed is the deceitful man that hath in his flock a male, and making a vow offereth in sacrifice that which is feeble to the Lord: for I am a great King, saith the Lord of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the Gentiles. | And cursed [is] a deceiver, who hath in his drove a male, And is vowing, and is sacrificing a marred thing to the Lord, For a great king [am] I, said Jehovah of Hosts, And My name [is] revered among nations! | A curse on the false man who has a male in his flock, and takes his oath, and gives to the Lord a damaged thing: for I am a great King, says the Lord of armies, and my name is to be feared among the Gentiles. |
