Romans 9:1 | And not only she. But when Rebecca also had conceived at once, of Isaac our father. | Truth I say in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing testimony with me in the Holy Spirit, | I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me testimony in the Holy Spirit, |
Romans 9:11 | For when the children were not yet born, nor had done any good or evil (that the purpose of God, according to election, might stand,) | that I have great grief and unceasing pain in my heart | That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. |
Romans 9:12 | Not of works, but of him that calleth, it was said to her: The elder shall serve the younger. | for I was wishing, I myself, to be anathema from the Christ for my brethren, my kindred, according to the flesh, | For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ, for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: |
Romans 9:13 | As it is written: Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated. | who are Israelites, whose [is] the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the lawgiving, and the service, and the promises, | Who are Israelites; to whom pertain the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; |
Romans 9:14 | What shall we say then? Is there injustice with God? God forbid. | whose [are] the fathers, and of whom [is] the Christ, according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed to the ages. Amen. | Whose are the fathers, and from whom according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. |
Romans 9:15 | For he saith to Moses: I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy; and I will shew mercy to whom I will shew mercy. | And it is not possible that the word of God hath failed; for not all who [are] of Israel are these Israel; | Not as though the word of God hath taken no effect. For they are not all Israel, who are descendants from Israel? |
Romans 9:16 | So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. | nor because they are seed of Abraham [are] all children, but `in Isaac shall a seed be called to thee;` | Neither because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. |
Romans 9:17 | For the scripture saith to Pharao: To this purpose have I raised thee, that I may shew my power in thee, and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. | that is, the children of the flesh these [are] not children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned for seed; | That is, They who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. |
Romans 9:18 | Therefore he hath mercy on whom he will; and whom he will, he hardeneth. | for the word of promise [is] this; `According to this time I will come, and there shall be to Sarah a son.` | For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son. |
Romans 9:19 | Thou wilt say therefore to me: Why doth he then find fault? for who resisteth his will? | And not only [so], but also Rebecca, having conceived by one Isaac our father | And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac, |
Romans 9:20 | O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it: Why hast thou made me thus? | (for they being not yet born, neither having done anything good or evil, that the purpose of God, according to choice, might remain; not of works, but of Him who is calling,) it was said to her | (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God, according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth) |
Romans 9:21 | Or hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump, to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? | `The greater shall serve the less;` | It was said to her, The elder shall serve the younger. |
Romans 9:22 | What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath, fitted for destruction, | according as it hath been written, `Jacob I did love, and Esau I did hate.` | As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. |
Romans 9:23 | That he might shew the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he hath prepared unto glory? | What, then, shall we say? unrighteousness [is] with God? let it not be! | What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? By no means. |
Romans 9:24 | Even us, whom also he hath called, nor only of the Jews, but also of the Gentiles. | for to Moses He saith, `I will do kindness to whom I do kindness, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion;` | For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. |
Romans 9:25 | As in Osee he saith: I will call that which was not my people, my people; and her that was not beloved, beloved; and her that had not obtained mercy, one that hath obtained mercy. | so, then not of him who is willing, nor of him who is running, but of God who is doing kindness: | So then, it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy. |
Romans 9:26 | And it shall be, in the place where it was said unto them, You are not my people; there they shall be called the sons of the living God. | for the Writing saith to Pharaoh `For this very thing I did raise thee up, that I might shew in thee My power, and that My name might be declared in all the land;` | For the scripture saith to Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might show my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. |
Romans 9:27 | And Isaias crieth out concerning Israel: If the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved. | so, then, to whom He willeth, He doth kindness, and to whom He willeth, He doth harden. | Therefore he hath mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. |
Romans 9:28 | For he shall finish his word, and cut it short in justice; because a short word shall the Lord make upon the earth. | Thou wilt say, then, to me, `Why yet doth He find fault? for His counsel who hath resisted?` | Thou wilt say then to me, Why doth he yet find fault? for who hath resisted his will? |
Romans 9:29 | And as Isaias foretold: Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been made as Sodom, and we had been like unto Gomorrha. | nay, but, O man, who art thou that art answering again to God? shall the thing formed say to Him who did form [it], Why me didst thou make thus? | No, but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? |
Romans 9:30 | What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who followed not after justice, have attained to justice, even the justice that is of faith. | hath not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make the one vessel to honour, and the one to dishonour? | Hath not the potter power over the clay of the same lump to make one vessel to honor, and another to dishonor? |
Romans 9:31 | But Israel, by following after the law of justice, is not come unto the law of justice. | And if God, willing to shew the wrath and to make known His power, did endure, in much long suffering, vessels of wrath fitted for destruction, | What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: |
Romans 9:32 | Why so? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were of works. For they stumbled at the stumblingstone. | and that He might make known the riches of His glory on vessels of kindness, that He before prepared for glory, whom also He did call us | And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared for glory, |
Romans 9:33 | As it is written: Behold I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and a rock of scandal; and whosoever believeth in him shall not be confounded. | not only out of Jews, but also out of nations, | Even us whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles. |
