Ephesians 5:1 | Be ye therefore followers of God, as most dear children; | Become, then, followers of God, as children beloved, | Therefore be imitators of God, as His dear children. |
Ephesians 5:2 | And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath delivered himself for us, an oblation and a sacrifice to God for an odour of sweetness. | and walk in love, as also the Christ did love us, and did give himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for an odour of a sweet smell, | And live and act lovingly, as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up to death on our behalf as an offering and sacrifice to God, yielding a fragrant odor. |
Ephesians 5:3 | But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not so much as be named among you, as becometh saints: | and whoredom, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as becometh saints; | But fornication and every kind of impurity, or covetousness, let them not even be mentioned among you, for they ought not to be named among God's people. |
Ephesians 5:4 | Or obscenity, or foolish talking, or scurrility, which is to no purpose; but rather giving of thanks. | also filthiness, and foolish talking, or jesting, the things not fit but rather thanksgiving; | Avoid shameful and foolish talk and low jesting they are all alike discreditable and in place of these give thanks. |
Ephesians 5:5 | For know you this and understand, that no fornicator, or unclean, or covetous person (which is a serving of idols), hath inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. | for this ye know, that every whoremonger, or unclean, or covetous person, who is an idolater, hath no inheritance in the reign of the Christ and God. | For be well assured that no fornicator or immoral person and no money-grubber or in other words idol-worshipper has any share awaiting him in the Kingdom of Christ and of God. |
Ephesians 5:6 | Let no man deceive you with vain words. For because of these things cometh the anger of God upon the children of unbelief. | Let no one deceive you with vain words, for because of these things cometh the anger of God upon the sons of the disobedience, | Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is on account of these very sins that God's anger is coming upon the disobedient. |
Ephesians 5:7 | Be ye not therefore partakers with them. | become not, then, partakers with them, | Therefore do not become sharers with them. |
Ephesians 5:8 | For you were heretofore darkness, but now light in the Lord. Walk then as children of the light. | for ye were once darkness, and now light in the Lord; as children of light walk ye, | There was a time when you were nothing but darkness. Now, as Christians, you are Light itself. |
Ephesians 5:9 | For the fruit of the light is in all goodness, and justice, and truth; | for the fruit of the Spirit [is] in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth, | Live and act as sons of Light for the effect of the Light is seen in every kind of goodness, uprightness and truth |
Ephesians 5:10 | Proving what is well pleasing to God: | proving what is well-pleasing to the Lord, | and learn in your own experiences what is fully pleasing to the Lord. |
Ephesians 5:11 | And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. | and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of the darkness and rather even convict, | Have nothing to do with the barren unprofitable deeds of darkness, but, instead of that, set your faces against them; |
Ephesians 5:12 | For the things that are done by them in secret, it is a shame even to speak of. | for the things in secret done by them it is a shame even to speak of, | for the things which are done by these people in secret it is disgraceful even to speak of. |
Ephesians 5:13 | But all things that are reproved, are made manifest by the light; for all that is made manifest is light. | and all the things reproved by the light are manifested, for everything that is manifested is light; | But everything can be tested by the light and thus be shown in its true colors; for whatever shines of itself is light. |
Ephesians 5:14 | Wherefore he saith: Rise thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead: and Christ shall enlighten thee. | wherefore he saith, `Arouse thyself, thou who art sleeping, and arise out of the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee.` | For this reason it is said, "Rise, sleeper; rise from among the dead, and Christ will shed light upon you." |
Ephesians 5:15 | See therefore, brethren, how you walk circumspectly: not as unwise, | See, then, how exactly ye walk, not as unwise, but as wise, | Therefore be very careful how you live and act. Let it not be as unwise men, but as wise. |
Ephesians 5:16 | But as wise: redeeming the time, because the days are evil. | redeeming the time, because the days are evil; | Buy up your opportunities, for these are evil times. |
Ephesians 5:17 | Wherefore become not unwise, but understanding what is the will of God. | because of this become not fools, but understanding what [is] the will of the Lord, | On this account do not prove yourselves wanting in sense, but try to understand what the Lord's will is. |
Ephesians 5:18 | And be not drunk with wine, wherein is luxury; but be ye filled with the holy Spirit, | and be not drunk with wine, in which is dissoluteness, but be filled in the Spirit, | Do not over-indulge in wine a thing in which excess is so easy |
Ephesians 5:19 | Speaking to yourselves in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual canticles, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord; | speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, | but drink deeply of God's Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and offer praise in your hearts to the Lord. |
Ephesians 5:20 | Giving thanks always for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God and the Father: | giving thanks always for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the God and Father; | Always and for everything let your thanks to God the Father be presented in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; |
Ephesians 5:21 | Being subject one to another, in the fear of Christ. | subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of God. | and submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. |
Ephesians 5:22 | Let women be subject to their husbands, as to the Lord: | The wives! to your own husbands subject yourselves, as to the Lord, | Married women, submit to your own husbands as if to the Lord; |
Ephesians 5:23 | Because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body. | because the husband is head of the wife, as also the Christ [is] head of the assembly, and he is saviour of the body, | because a husband is the Head of his wife as Christ also is the Head of the Church, being indeed the Saviour of this His Body. |
Ephesians 5:24 | Therefore as the church is subject to Christ, so also let the wives be to their husbands in all things. | but even as the assembly is subject to Christ, so also [are] the wives to their own husbands in everything. | And just as the Church submits to Christ, so also married women should be entirely submissive to their husbands. |
Ephesians 5:25 | Husbands, love your wives, as Christ also loved the church, and delivered himself up for it: | The husbands! love your own wives, as also the Christ did love the assembly, and did give himself for it, | Married men, love your wives, as Christ also loved the Church and gave Himself up to death for her; |
Ephesians 5:26 | That he might sanctify it, cleansing it by the laver of water in the word of life: | that he might sanctify it, having cleansed [it] with the bathing of the water in the saying, | in order to make her holy, cleansing her with the baptismal water by the word, |
Ephesians 5:27 | That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any; such thing; but that it should be holy, and without blemish. | that he might present it to himself the assembly in glory, not having spot or wrinkle, or any of such things, but that it may be holy and unblemished; | that He might present the Church to Himself a glorious bride, without spot or wrinkle or any other defect, but to be holy and unblemished. |
Ephesians 5:28 | So also ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife, loveth himself. | so ought the husbands to love their own wives as their own bodies: he who is loving his own wife himself he doth love; | So too married men ought to love their wives as much as they love themselves. He who loves his wife loves himself. |
Ephesians 5:29 | For no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, as also Christ doth the church: | for no one ever his own flesh did hate, but doth nourish and cherish it, as also the Lord the assembly, | For never yet has a man hated his own body. On the contrary he feeds and cherishes it, just as Christ feeds and cherishes the Church; |
Ephesians 5:30 | Because we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. | because members we are of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones; | because we are, as it were, parts of His Body. |
Ephesians 5:31 | For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they shall be two in one flesh. | `for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and they shall be the two for one flesh;` | "For this reason a man is to leave his father and his mother and be united to his wife, and the two shall be as one." |
Ephesians 5:32 | This is a great sacrament; but I speak in Christ and in the church. | this secret is great, and I speak in regard to Christ and to the assembly; | That is a great truth hitherto kept secret: I mean the truth concerning Christ and the Church. |
Ephesians 5:33 | Nevertheless let every one of you in particular love his wife as himself: and let the wife fear her husband. | but ye also, every one in particular let each his own wife so love as himself, and the wife that she may reverence the husband. | Yet I insist that among you also, each man is to love his own wife as much as he loves himself, and let a married woman see to it that she treats her husband with respect. |
