Luke 4:1

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the desert,

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, turned back from the Jordan, and was brought in the Spirit to the wilderness,

Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led about by the Spirit in the Desert for forty days,

Luke 4:2

For the space of forty days; and was tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was hungry.

forty days being tempted by the Devil, and he did not eat anything in those days, and they having been ended, he afterward hungered,

tempted all the while by the Devil. During those days He ate nothing, and at the close of them He suffered from hunger.

Luke 4:3

And the devil said to him: If thou be the Son of God, say to this stone that it be made bread.

and the Devil said to him, `If Son thou art of God, speak to this stone that it may become bread.`

Then the Devil said to Him, "If you are God's Son, tell this stone to become bread."

Luke 4:4

And Jesus answered him: It is written, that Man liveth not by bread alone, but by every word of God.

And Jesus answered him, saying, `It hath been written, that, not on bread only shall man live, but on every saying of God.`

"It is written," replied Jesus, "`It is not on bread alone that a man shall live.'"

Luke 4:5

And the devil led him into a high mountain, and shewed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time;

And the Devil having brought him up to an high mountain, shewed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time,

The Devil next led Him up and caused Him to see at a glance all the kingdoms of the world.

Luke 4:6

And he said to him: To thee will I give all this power, and the glory of them; for to me they are delivered, and to whom I will, I give them.

and the Devil said to him, `To thee I will give all this authority, and their glory, because to me it hath been delivered, and to whomsoever I will, I do give it;

And the Devil said to Him, "To you will I give all this authority and this splendour; for it has been handed over to me, and on whomsoever I will I bestow it.

Luke 4:7

If thou therefore wilt adore before me, all shall be thine.

thou, then, if thou mayest bow before me all shall be thine.`

If therefore you do homage to me, it shall all be yours.'

Luke 4:8

And Jesus answering said to him: It is written: Thou shalt adore the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

And Jesus answering him said, `Get thee behind me, Adversary, for it hath been written, Thou shalt bow before the Lord thy God, and Him only thou shalt serve.`

Jesus answered him, "It is written, `To the Lord thy God thou shalt do homage, and to Him alone shalt thou render worship.'"

Luke 4:9

And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and he said to him: If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself from hence.

And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, `If the Son thou art of God, cast thyself down hence,

Then he brought Him to Jerusalem and caused Him to stand on the roof of the Temple, and said to Him, "If you are God's Son, throw yourself down from here; for it is written,

Luke 4:10

For it is written, that He hath given his angels charge over thee, that they keep thee.

for it hath been written To His messengers He will give charge concerning thee, to guard over thee,

`He will give orders to His angels concerning thee, to guard thee safely;'

Luke 4:11

And that in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone.

and On hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou mayest dash against a stone thy foot.`

and `On their hands they shall bear thee up, Lest at any moment thou shouldst strike thy foot against a stone.'"

Luke 4:12

And Jesus answering, said to him: It is said: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

And Jesus answering said to him `It hath been said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.`

The reply of Jesus was, "It is said, `Thou shalt not put the Lord they God to the proof.'"

Luke 4:13

And all the temptation being ended, the devil departed from him for a time.

And having ended all temptation, the Devil departed from him till a convenient season.

So the Devil, having fully tried every kind of temptation on Him, left Him for a time.

Luke 4:14

And Jesus returned in the power of the spirit, into Galilee, and the fame of him went out through the whole country.

And Jesus turned back in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a fame went forth through all the region round about concerning him,

Then Jesus returned in the Spirit's power to Galilee; and His fame spread through all the adjacent districts.

Luke 4:15

And he taught in their synagogues, and was magnified by all.

and he was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

And He proceeded to teach in their synagogues, winning praise from all.

Luke 4:16

And he came to Nazareth, where he was brought up: and he went into the synagogue, according to his custom, on the sabbath day; and he rose up to read.

And he came to Nazareth, where he hath been brought up, and he went in, according to his custom, on the sabbath-day, to the synagogue, and stood up to read;

He came to Nazareth also, where He had been brought up; and, as was His custom, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.

Luke 4:17

And the book of Isaias the prophet was delivered unto him. And as he unfolded the book, he found the place where it was written:

and there was given over to him a roll of Isaiah the prophet, and having unfolded the roll, he found the place where it hath been written:

And there was handed to Him the book of the Prophet Isaiah, and, opening the book, He found the place where it was written,

Luke 4:18

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. Wherefore he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the contrite of heart,

`The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, Because He did anoint me; To proclaim good news to the poor, Sent me to heal the broken of heart, To proclaim to captives deliverance, And to blind receiving of sight, To send away the bruised with deliverance,

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to proclaim Good News to the poor; He has sent me to announce release to the prisoners of war and recovery of sight to the blind: to send away free those whom tyranny has crushed,

Luke 4:19

To preach deliverance to the captives, and sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of reward.

To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.`

to proclaim the year of acceptance with the Lord."

Luke 4:20

And when he had folded the book, he restored it to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

And having folded the roll, having given [it] back to the officer, he sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were gazing on him.

And rolling up the book, He returned it to the attendant, and sat down to speak. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him.

Luke 4:21

And he began to say to them: This day is fulfilled this scripture in your ears.

And he began to say unto them `To-day hath this writing been fulfilled in your ears;`

Then He proceeded to say to them, "To-day is this Scripture fulfilled in your hearing."

Luke 4:22

And all gave testimony to him: and they wondered at the words of grace that proceeded from his mouth, and they said: Is not this the son of Joseph?

and all were bearing testimony to him, and were wondering at the gracious words that are coming forth out of his mouth, and they said, `Is not this the son of Joseph?`

And they all spoke well of Him, wondering at the sweet words of kindness which fell from His lips, while they asked one another, "Is not this Joseph's son?"

Luke 4:23

And he said to them: Doubtless you will say to me this similitude: Physician, heal thyself: as great things as we have heard done in Capharnaum, do also here in thy own country.

And he said unto them, `Certainly ye will say to me this simile, Physician, heal thyself; as great things as we heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country;`

"Doubtless," said He, "you will quote to me the proverb, `Physician, cure yourself: all that we hear that you have done at Capernaum, do here also in your native place.'"

Luke 4:24

And he said: Amen I say to you, that no prophet is accepted in his own country.

and he said, `Verily I say to you No prophet is accepted in his own country;

"I tell you in solemn truth," He added, "that no Prophet is welcomed among his own people.

Luke 4:25

In truth I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elias in Israel, when heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was a great famine throughout all the earth.

and of a truth I say to you, Many widows were in the days of Elijah, in Israel, when the heaven was shut for three years and six months, when great famine came on all the land,

But I tell you in truth that there was many a widow in Israel in the time of Elijah, when there was no rain for three years and six months and there came a severe famine over all the land;

Luke 4:26

And to none of them was Elias sent, but to Sarepta of Sidon, to a widow woman.

and unto none of them was Elijah sent, but to Sarepta of Sidon, unto a woman, a widow;

and yet to not one of them was Elijah sent: he was only sent to a widow at Zarephath in the Sidonian country.

Luke 4:27

And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet: and none of them was cleansed but Naaman the Syrian.

and many lepers were in the time of Elisha the prophet, in Israel, and none of them was cleansed, but Naaman the Syrian.`

And there was also many a leper in Israel in the time of the Prophet Elisha, and yet not one of them was cleansed, but Naaman the Syrian was."

Luke 4:28

And all they in the synagogue, hearing these things, were filled with anger.

And all in the synagogue were filled with wrath, hearing these things,

Then all in the synagogue, while listening to these words, were filled with fury.

Luke 4:29

And they rose up and thrust him out of the city; and they brought him to the brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

and having risen, they put him forth without the city, and brought him unto the brow of the hill on which their city had been built to cast him down headlong,

They rose, hurried Him outside the town, and brought Him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, to throw Him down the cliff;

Luke 4:30

But he passing through the midst of them, went his way.

and he, having gone through the midst of them, went away.

but He passed through the midst of them and went His way.

Luke 4:31

And he went down into Capharnaum, a city of Galilee, and there he taught them on the sabbath days.

And he came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the sabbaths,

So He came down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, where He frequently taught the people on the Sabbath days.

Luke 4:32

And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his speech was with power.

and they were astonished at his teaching, because his word was with authority.

And they were greatly impressed by His teaching, because He spoke with the language of authority.

Luke 4:33

And in the synagogue there was a man who had an unclean devil, and he cried out with a loud voice,

And in the synagogue was a man, having a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a great voice,

But in the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of a foul demon. In a loud voice he cried out,

Luke 4:34

Saying: Let us alone, what have we to do with thee, Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the holy one of God.

saying, `Away, what to us and to thee, Jesus, O Nazarene? thou didst come to destroy us; I have known thee who thou art the Holy One of God.`

"Ha! Jesus the Nazarene, what have you to do with us? I know who you are God's Holy One!"

Luke 4:35

And Jesus rebuked him, saying: Hold thy peace, and go out of him. And when the devil had thrown him into the midst, he went out of him, and hurt him not at all.

And Jesus did rebuke him, saying, `Be silenced, and come forth out of him;` and the demon having cast him into the midst, came forth from him, having hurt him nought;

But Jesus rebuked the demon. "Silence!" He exclaimed; "come out of him." Upon this, the demon hurled the man into the midst of them, and came out of him without doing him any harm.

Luke 4:36

And there came fear upon all, and they talked among themselves, saying: What word is this, for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they go out?

and amazement came upon all, and they were speaking together, with one another, saying, `What [is] this word, that with authority and power he doth command the unclean spirits, and they come forth?`

All were astonished and awe-struck; and they asked one another, "What sort of language is this? For with authority and real power He gives orders to the foul spirits and they come out."

Luke 4:37

And the fame of him was published into every place of the country.

and there was going forth a fame concerning him to every place of the region round about.

And the talk about Him spread into every part of the neighbouring country.

Luke 4:38

And Jesus rising up out of the synagogue, went into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever, and they besought him for her.

And having risen out of the synagogue, he entered into the house of Simon, and the mother-in-law of Simon was pressed with a great fever, and they did ask him about her,

Now when He rose and left the synagogue He went to Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from an acute attack of fever; and they consulted Him about her.

Luke 4:39

And standing over her, he commanded the fever, and it left her. And immediately rising, she ministered to them.

and having stood over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her, and presently, having risen, she was ministering to them.

Then standing over her He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she at once rose and waited on them.

Luke 4:40

And when the sun was down, all they that had any sick with divers diseases, brought them to him. But he laying his hands on every one of them, healed them.

And at the setting of the sun, all, as many as had any ailing with manifold sicknesses, brought them unto him, and he on each one of them [his] hands having put, did heal them.

At sunset all who had friends suffering from any illness brought them to Him, and He laid His hands on them all, one by one, and cured them.

Luke 4:41

And devils went out from many, crying out and saying: Thou art the Son of God. And rebuking them he suffered them not to speak, for they knew that he was Christ.

And demons also were coming forth from many, crying out and saying `Thou art the Christ, the Son of God;` and rebuking, he did not suffer them to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ.

Demons also came out of many, loudly calling out, "You are the Son of God." But He rebuked them and forbad them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.

Luke 4:42

And when it was day, going out he went into a desert place, and the multitudes sought him, and came unto him: and they stayed him that he should not depart from them.

And day having come, having gone forth, he went on to a desert place, and the multitudes were seeking him, and they came unto him, and were staying him not to go on from them,

Next morning, at daybreak, He left the town and went away to a solitary place; but the people flocked out to find Him, and, coming to the place where He was, they endeavoured to detain Him that He might not leave them.

Luke 4:43

To whom he said: To other cities also I must preach the kingdom of God: for therefore am I sent.

and he said unto them `Also to the other cities it behoveth me to proclaim good news of the reign of God, because for this I have been sent;`

But He said to them, "I have to tell the Good News of the Kingdom of God to the other towns also, because for this purpose I was sent."

Luke 4:44

And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

and he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

And for some time He preached in the synagogues in Galilee.
