Matthew 17:1 | And after six days Jesus taketh unto him Peter and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart: | And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, and James, and John his brother, and doth bring them up to a high mount by themselves, | Six day later, Jesus took with Him Peter and the brothers James and John, and brought them up a high mountain to a solitary place. |
Matthew 17:2 | And he was transfigured before them. And his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow. | and he was transfigured before them, and his face shone as the sun, and his garments did become white as the light, | There in their presence His form underwent a change; His face shone like the sun, and His raiment became as white as the light. |
Matthew 17:3 | And behold there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking with him. | and lo, appear to them did Moses and Elijah, talking together with him. | And suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them conversing with Him. |
Matthew 17:4 | And Peter answering, said to Jesus: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. | And Peter answering said to Jesus, `Sir, it is good to us to be here; if thou wilt, we may make here three booths for thee one, and for Moses one, and one for Elijah.` | Then Peter said to Jesus, "Master, we are thankful to you that we are here. If you approve, I will put up three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." |
Matthew 17:5 | And as he was yet speaking, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them. And lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye him. | While he is yet speaking, lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying, `This is My Son, the Beloved, in whom I did delight; hear him.` | He was still speaking when a luminous cloud spread over them; and a voice was heard from within the cloud, which said, "This is My Son dearly beloved, in whom is My delight. Listen to Him." |
Matthew 17:6 | And the disciples hearing, fell upon their face, and were very much afraid. | And the disciples having heard, did fall upon their face, and were exceedingly afraid, | On hearing this voice, the disciples fell on their faces and were filled with terror. |
Matthew 17:7 | And Jesus came and touched them: and said to them, Arise, and fear not. | and Jesus having come near, touched them, and said, `Rise, be not afraid,` | But Jesus came and touched them, and said, "Rouse yourselves and have no fear." |
Matthew 17:8 | And they lifting up their eyes saw no one but only Jesus. | and having lifted up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus only. | So they looked up, and saw no one but Jesus. |
Matthew 17:9 | And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: Tell the vision to no man, till the Son of man be risen from the dead. | And as they are coming down from the mount, Jesus charged them, saying, `Say to no one the vision, till the Son of Man out of the dead may rise.` | As they were descending the mountain, Jesus laid a command upon them. "Tell no one," He said, "of the sight you have seen till the Son of Man has risen from among the dead." |
Matthew 17:10 | And his disciples asked him, saying: Why then do the scribes say that Elias must come first? | And his disciples questioned him, saying, `Why then do the scribes say that Elijah it behoveth to come first?` | "Why then," asked the disciples, "do the Scribes say that Elijah must first come?" |
Matthew 17:11 | But he answering, said to them: Elias indeed shall come, and restore all things. | And Jesus answering said to them, `Elijah doth indeed come first, and shall restore all things, | "Elijah was indeed to come," He replied, "and would reform everything. |
Matthew 17:12 | But I say to you, that Elias is already come, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they had a mind. So also the Son of man shall suffer from them. | and I say to you Elijah did already come, and they did not know him, but did with him whatever they would, so also the Son of Man is about to suffer by them.` | But I tell you that he has already come, and they did not recognize him, but dealt with him as they chose. And before long the Son of Man will be treated by them in a similar way." |
Matthew 17:13 | Then the disciples understood, that he had spoken to them of John the Baptist. | Then understood the disciples that concerning John the Baptist he spake to them. | Then it dawned upon the disciples that it was John the Baptist about whom He had spoken to them. |
Matthew 17:14 | And when he was come to the multitude, there came to him a man falling down on his knees before him, saying: Lord, have pity on my son, for he is a lunatic, and suffereth much: for he falleth often into the fire, and often into the water. | And when they came unto the multitude, there came to him a man, kneeling down to him, | When they had returned to the people, there came to Him a man who fell on his knees before Him and besought Him. |
Matthew 17:15 | And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. | and saying, `Sir, deal kindly with my son, for he is lunatic, and doth suffer miserably, for often he doth fall into the fire, and often into the water, | "Sir," he said, "have pity on my son, for he is an epileptic and is very ill. Often he falls into the fire and often into the water. |
Matthew 17:16 | Then Jesus answered and said: O unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. | and I brought him near to thy disciples, and they were not able to heal him.` | I have brought him to your disciples, and they have not been able to cure him." |
Matthew 17:17 | And Jesus rebuked him, and the devil went out of him, and the child was cured from that hour. | And Jesus answering said, `O generation, unstedfast and perverse, till when shall I be with you? till when shall I bear you? bring him to me hither;` | "O unbelieving and perverse generation!" replied Jesus; "how long shall I be with you? how long shall I endure you? Bring him to me." |
Matthew 17:18 | Then came the disciples to Jesus secretly, and said: Why could not we cast him out? | and Jesus rebuked him, and the demon went out of him, and the lad was healed from that hour. | Then Jesus reprimanded the demon, and it came out and left him; and the boy was cured from that moment. |
Matthew 17:19 | Jesus said to them: Because of your unbelief. For, amen I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, Remove from hence hither, and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible to you. | Then the disciples having come to Jesus by himself, said, `Wherefore were we not able to cast him out?` | Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked Him, "Why could not we expel the demon?" |
Matthew 17:20 | But this kind is not cast out but by prayer and fasting. | And Jesus said to them, `Through your want of faith; for verily I say to you, if ye may have faith as a grain of mustard, ye shall say to this mount, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you, | "Because your faith is so small," He replied; "for I solemnly declare to you that if you have faith like a mustard-seed, you shall say to this mountain, `Remove from this place to that,' and it will remove; and nothing shall be impossible to you. |
Matthew 17:21 | And when they abode together in Galilee, Jesus said to them: The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: | and this kind doth not go forth except in prayer and fasting.` | But an evil spirit of this kind is only driven out by prayer and fasting." |
Matthew 17:22 | And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise again. And they were troubled exceedingly. | And while they are living in Galilee, Jesus said to them, `The Son of Man is about to be delivered up to the hands of men, | As they were travelling about in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men; |
Matthew 17:23 | And when they were come to Capharnaum, they that recieved the didrachmas, came to Peter and said to him: Doth not your master pay the didrachmas? | and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise,` and they were exceeding sorry. | they will put Him to death, but on the third day He will be raised to life again." And they were exceedingly distressed. |
Matthew 17:24 | He said: Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying: What is thy opinion, Simon? The kings of the earth, of whom do they receive tribute or custom? of their own children, or of strangers? | And they having come to Capernaum, those receiving the didrachms came near to Peter, and said, `Your teacher doth he not pay the didrachms?` He saith, `Yes.` | After their arrival at Capernaum the collectors of the half-shekel came and asked Peter, "Does not your Teacher pay the half-shekel?" |
Matthew 17:25 | And he said: Of strangers. Jesus said to him: Then the children are free. | And when he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, `What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth from whom do they receive custom or poll-tax? from their sons or from the strangers?` | "Yes," he replied, and then went into the house. But before he spoke a word Jesus said, "What think you, Simon? From whom do this world's kings receive customs or capitation tax? from their own children, or from others?" |
Matthew 17:26 | But that we may not scandalize them, go to the sea, and cast in a hook: and that fish which shall first come up, take: and when thou hast opened its mouth, thou shalt find a stater: take that, and give it to them for me and thee. | Peter saith to him, `From the strangers.` Jesus said to him, `Then are the sons free; | "From others," he replied. "Then the children go free," said Jesus. |
