Luke 15:1Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. Now all the tax-farmers and sinners came near to give ear to him.Now the tax-gatherers and the notorious sinners were everywhere in the habit of coming close to Him to listen to Him;
Luke 15:2And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. And the Pharisees and scribes were angry, saying, This man gives approval to sinners, and takes food with them.and this led the Pharisees and the Scribes indignantly to complain, saying, "He gives a welcome to notorious sinners, and joins them at their meals!"
Luke 15:3And he spake this parable unto them, saying, And he made a story for them, saying,So in figurative language He asked them,
Luke 15:4What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if one of them gets loose and goes away, will not let the ninety-nine be in the waste land by themselves, and go after the wandering one, till he sees where it is?"Which of you men, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in their pasture and go in search of the lost one till he finds it?
Luke 15:5And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he has got it again, he takes it in his arms with joy.And when he has found it, he lifts it on his shoulder, glad at heart.
Luke 15:6And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. And when he gets back to his house, he sends for his neighbours and friends, saying to them, Be glad with me, for I have got back my sheep which had gone away.Then coming home he calls his friends and neighbours together, and says, `Congratulate me, for I have found my sheep the one I had lost.'
Luke 15:7I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. I say to you that even so there will be more joy in heaven when one sinner is turned away from his wrongdoing, than for ninety-nine good men, who have no need of a change of heart.I tell you that in the same way there will be rejoicing in Heaven over one repentant sinner more rejoicing than over ninety-nine blameless persons who have no need of repentance.
Luke 15:8Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? Or what woman, having ten bits of silver, if one bit has gone from her hands, will not get a light, and go through her house, searching with care till she sees it?"Or what woman who has ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully till she finds it?
Luke 15:9And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. And when she has it again, she gets her friends and neighbours together, saying, Be glad with me, for I have got back the bit of silver which had gone from me.And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbours, and says, "`Congratulate me, for I have found the coin which I had lost.'
Luke 15:10Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth. Even so, I say to you, There is joy among the angels of God, when one sinner is turned away from his wrongdoing."I tell you that in the same way there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one repentant sinner."
Luke 15:11And he said, A certain man had two sons: And he said, A certain man had two sons:He went on to say, "There was a man who had two sons.
Luke 15:12And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me that part of your property which will be mine. And he made division of his goods between them.The younger of them said to his father, "`Father, give me the share of the property that comes to me.' "So he divided his wealth between them.
Luke 15:13And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And not long after, the younger son got together everything which was his and took a journey into a far-away country, and there all his money went in foolish living.No long time afterwards the younger son got all together and travelled to a distant country, where he wasted his money in debauchery and excess.
Luke 15:14And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And when everything was gone, there was no food to be had in that country, and he was in need.At last, when he had spent everything, there came a terrible famine throughout that country, and he began to feel the pinch of want.
Luke 15:15And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he went and put himself into the hands of one of the people of that country, and he sent him into his fields to give the pigs their food.So he went and hired himself to one of the inhabitants of that country, who sent him on to his farm to tend swine;
Luke 15:16And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And so great was his need that he would have been glad to take the pigs' food, and no one gave him anything.and he longed to make a hearty meal of the pods the swine were eating, but no one gave him any.
Luke 15:17And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! But when he came to his senses, he said, What numbers of my father's servants have bread enough, and more, while I am near to death here through need of food!"But on coming to himself he said, "`How many of my father's hired men have more bread than they want, while I here am dying of hunger!
Luke 15:18I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have done wrong, against heaven and in your eyes:I will rise and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before you:
Luke 15:19And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. I am no longer good enough to be named your son: make me like one of your servants.I no longer deserve to be called a son of yours: treat me as one of your hired men.'
Luke 15:20And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And he got up and went to his father. But while he was still far away, his father saw him and was moved with pity for him and went quickly and took him in his arms and gave him a kiss."So he rose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and pitied him, and ran and threw his arms round his neck and kissed him tenderly.
Luke 15:21And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. And his son said to him, Father, I have done wrong, against heaven and in your eyes: I am no longer good enough to be named your son."`Father,' cried the son, `I have sinned against Heaven and before you: no longer do I deserve to be called a son of yours.'
Luke 15:22But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: But the father said to his servants, Get out the first robe quickly, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet:"But the father said to his servants, "`Fetch a good coat quickly the best one and put it on him; and bring a ring for his finger and shoes for his feet.
Luke 15:23And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: And get the fat young ox and put it to death, and let us have a feast, and be glad.Fetch the fat calf and kill it, and let us feast and enjoy ourselves;
Luke 15:24For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. For this, my son, who was dead, is living again; he had gone away from me, and has come back. And they were full of joy.for my son here was dead and has come to life again: he was lost and has been found.' "And they began to be merry.
Luke 15:25Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. Now the older son was in the field: and when he came near the house, the sounds of music and dancing came to his ears."Now his elder son was out on the farm; and when he returned and came near home, he heard music and dancing.
Luke 15:26And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. And he sent for one of the servants, questioning him about what it might be.Then he called one of the lads to him and asked what all this meant.
Luke 15:27And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. And he said to him, Your brother has come; and your father has had the young ox put to death because he has come back safely."`Your brother has come,' he replied; `and your father has had the fat calf killed, because he has got him home safe and sound.'
Luke 15:28And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. But he was angry and would not go in; and his father came out and made a request to him to come in."Then he was angry and would not go in. But his father came out and entreated him.
Luke 15:29And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: But he made answer and said to his father, See, all these years I have been your servant, doing your orders in everything: and you never gave me even a young goat so that I might have a feast with my friends:"`All these years,' replied the son, `I have been slaving for you, and I have never at any time disobeyed any of your orders, and yet you have never given me so much as a kid, for me to enjoy myself with my friends;
Luke 15:30But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. But when this your son came, who has been wasting your property with bad women, you put to death the fat young ox for him.but now that this son of yours is come who has eaten up your property among his bad women, you have killed the fat calf for him.'
Luke 15:31And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. And he said to him, Son, you are with me at all times, and all I have is yours."`You my dear son,' said the father, `are always with me, and all that is mine is also yours.
Luke 15:32It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found. But it was right to be glad and to have a feast; for this your brother, who was dead, is living again; he had gone away and has come back.We are bound to make merry and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead and has come back to life, he was lost and has been found.'"
