Matthew 11:1 | And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. | And it came about that when Jesus had come to the end of giving these orders to his twelve disciples, he went away from there, teaching and preaching in their towns. | When Jesus had concluded His instructions to His twelve disciples, He left in order to teach and to proclaim His Message in the neighbouring towns. |
Matthew 11:2 | Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, | Now when John had news in prison of the works of the Christ, he sent his disciples | Now John had heard in prison about the Christ's doings, and he sent some of his disciples to inquire: |
Matthew 11:3 | And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? | To say to him, Are you he who is to come, or are we waiting for another? | "Are you the Coming One, or is it a different person that we are to expect?" |
Matthew 11:4 | Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: | And Jesus, answering, said to them, Go and give news to John of the things which you are seeing and hearing: | "Go and report to John what you see and hear," replied Jesus; |
Matthew 11:5 | The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. | The blind see; those who were not able to, are walking; lepers are made clean; those who were without hearing, now have their ears open; the dead come to life again, and the poor have the good news given to them. | "blind eyes receive sight, and cripples walk; lepers are cleansed, and deaf ears hear; the dead are raised to life, and the poor have the Good News proclaimed to them; |
Matthew 11:6 | And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. | And a blessing will be on him who has no doubts about me. | and blessed is every one who does not stumble and fall because of my claims." |
Matthew 11:7 | And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? | And when they were going away, Jesus, talking of John, said to all the people, What went you out into the waste land to see? a tall stem moving in the wind? | When the messengers had taken their leave, Jesus proceeded to say to the multitude concerning John, "What did you go out into the Desert to gaze at? A reed waving in the wind? |
Matthew 11:8 | But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. | But what went you out to see? a man delicately clothed? Those who have fair robes are in kings' houses. | But what did you go out to see? A man luxuriously dressed? Those who wear luxurious clothes are to be found in kings' palaces. |
Matthew 11:9 | But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. | But why did you go out? to see a prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. | But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet. |
Matthew 11:10 | For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. | This is he of whom it has been said, See, I send my servant before your face, who will make ready your way before you. | This is he of whom it is written, "`See I am sending My messenger before Thy face, and he will make Thy road ready before Thee.' |
Matthew 11:11 | Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. | Truly I say to you, Among the sons of women there has not been a greater than John the Baptist: but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. | "I solemnly tell you that among all of woman born no greater has ever been raised up than John the Baptist; yet one who is of lower rank in the Kingdom of the Heavens is greater than he. |
Matthew 11:12 | And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. | And from the days of John the Baptist till now, the kingdom of heaven is forcing its way in, and men of force take it. | But from the time of John the Baptist till now, the Kingdom of the Heavens has been suffering violent assault, and the violent have been seizing it by force. |
Matthew 11:13 | For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. | For all the prophets and the law were in force till John. | For all the Prophets and the Law taught until John. |
Matthew 11:14 | And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. | And if you are able to see it, this is Elijah who was to come. | And (if you are willing to receive it) he is the Elijah who was to come. |
Matthew 11:15 | He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. | He who has ears, let him give ear. | Listen, every one who has ears! |
Matthew 11:16 | But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, | But what comparison may I make of this generation? It is like children seated in the market-places, crying out to one another, | "But to what shall I compare the present generation? It is like children sitting in the open places, who call to their playmates. |
Matthew 11:17 | And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. | We made music for you and you did not take part in the dance; we gave cries of sorrow and you made no signs of grief. | "`We have played the flute to you,' they say, `and you have not danced: we have sung dirges, and you have not beaten your breasts.' |
Matthew 11:18 | For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. | For John came, taking no food or drink, and they say, He has an evil spirit. | "For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, `He has a demon.' |
Matthew 11:19 | The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. | The Son of man has come feasting, and they say, See, a lover of food and wine, a friend of tax-farmers and sinners! And wisdom is judged to be right by her works. | The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they exclaim, `See this man! given to gluttony and tippling, and a friend of tax-gatherers and notorious sinners!' And yet Wisdom is vindicated by her actions." |
Matthew 11:20 | Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: | Then he went on to say hard things to the towns where most of his works of power were done, because they had not been turned from their sins. | Then began He to upbraid the towns where most of His mighty works had been done because they had not repented. |
Matthew 11:21 | Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. | Unhappy are you, Chorazin! Unhappy are you, Beth-saida! For if the works of power which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have been turned from their sins in days gone by, clothing themselves in haircloth and putting dust on their heads. | "Alas for thee, Chorazin!" He cried. "Alas for thee, Bethsaida! For had the mighty works been done in Tyre and Sidon which have been done in both of you, they would long ere now have repented, covered with sackcloth and ashes. |
Matthew 11:22 | But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. | But I say to you, It will be better for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judging, than for you. | Only I tell you that it will be more endurable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of Judgement than for you. |
Matthew 11:23 | And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. | And you, Capernaum, were you not to be lifted up to heaven? you will go down into hell: for if the works of power which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have been here to this day. | And thou, Capernaum, shalt thou be exalted even to Heaven? Even to Hades shalt thou descend. For had the mighty works been done in Sodom which have been done in thee, it would have remained until now. |
Matthew 11:24 | But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee. | But I say to you that it will be better for the land of Sodom in the day of judging, than for you. | Only I tell you all, that it will be more endurable for the land of Sodom on the day of Judgement than for thee." |
Matthew 11:25 | At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. | At that time Jesus made answer and said, I give praise to you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have kept these things secret from the wise and the men of learning, and have made them clear to little children. | About that time Jesus exclaimed, "I heartily praise Thee, Father, Lord of Heaven and of earth, that Thou hast hidden these things from sages and men of discernment, and hast unveiled them to babes. |
Matthew 11:26 | Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. | Yes, Father, for so it was pleasing in your eyes. | Yes, Father, for such has been Thy gracious will. |
Matthew 11:27 | All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. | All things have been given to me by my Father; and no one has knowledge of the Son, but the Father; and no one has knowledge of the Father, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will make it clear. | "All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one fully knows the Son except the Father, nor does any one fully know the Father except the Son and all to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him. |
Matthew 11:28 | Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. | Come to me, all you who are troubled and weighted down with care, and I will give you rest. | "Come to me, all you toiling and burdened ones, and *I* will give you rest. |
Matthew 11:29 | Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. | Take my yoke on you and become like me, for I am gentle and without pride, and you will have rest for your souls; | Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. |
Matthew 11:30 | For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. | For my yoke is good, and the weight I take up is not hard. | For it is good to bear my yoke, and my burden is light." |
