Acts 19:2 | He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. | he said to them, Did ye receive [the] Holy Spirit when ye had believed? And they [said] to him, We did not even hear if [the] Holy Spirit was [come]. | "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you first believed?" he asked them. "No," they replied, "we did not even hear that there is a Holy Spirit." |
Acts 19:3 | And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. | And he said, To what then were ye baptised? And they said, To the baptism of John. | "Into what then were you baptized?" he asked. "Into John's baptism," they replied. |
Acts 19:4 | Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. | And Paul said, John indeed baptised [with] the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on him that was coming after him, that is, on Jesus. | "John," he said, "administered a baptism of repentance, bidding the people believe on One who was to come after him; namely, on Jesus." |
Acts 19:5 | When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. | And when they heard that, they were baptised to the name of the Lord Jesus. | On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus; |
Acts 19:6 | And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. | And Paul having laid [his] hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. | and when Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy. |
Acts 19:7 | And all the men were about twelve. | And all the men were about twelve. | They numbered in all about twelve men. |
Acts 19:8 | And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God. | And entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly during three months, reasoning and persuading [the things] concerning the kingdom of God. | Afterwards he went into the synagogue. There for three months he continued to preach fearlessly, explaining in words which carried conviction the truths which concern the Kingdom of God. |
Acts 19:9 | But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus. | But when some were hardened and disbelieved, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, he left them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. | But some grew obstinate in unbelief and spoke evil of the new faith before all the congregation. So Paul left them, and, taking with him those who were disciples, held discussions daily in Tyrannus's lecture-hall. |
Acts 19:10 | And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. | And this took place for two years, so that all that inhabited Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. | This went on for two years, so that all the inhabitants of the province of Asia, Jews as well as Greeks, heard the Lord's Message. |
Acts 19:11 | And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: | And God wrought no ordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, | God also brought about extraordinary miracles through Paul's instrumentality. |
Acts 19:12 | So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. | so that even napkins or aprons were brought from his body [and put] upon the sick, and the diseases left them, and the wicked spirits went out. | Towels or aprons, for instance, which Paul had handled used to be carried to the sick, and they recovered from their ailments, or the evil spirits left them. |
Acts 19:13 | Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. | And certain of the Jewish exorcists also, who went about, took in hand to call upon those who had wicked spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preaches. | But there were also some wandering Jewish exorcists who undertook to invoke the name of Jesus over those who had the evil spirits, saying, "I command you by that Jesus whom Paul preaches." |
Acts 19:14 | And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. | And there were certain [men], seven sons of Sceva, Jewish high priest, who were doing this. | There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew of high-priestly family, who were doing this. |
Acts 19:15 | And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? | But the wicked spirit answering said to them, Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; but *ye*, who are ye? | "Jesus I know," the evil spirit answered, "and Paul I have heard of, but who are you?" |
Acts 19:16 | And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. | And the man in whom the wicked spirit was leaped upon them, and having mastered both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. | And the man in whom the evil spirit was sprang on two of them, over-mastered them both, and treated them with such violence, that they fled from the house stripped of their clothes and wounded. |
Acts 19:17 | And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. | And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who inhabited Ephesus, and fear fell upon all of them, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. | All the people of Ephesus, Jews as well as Greeks, came to know of this. There was widespread terror, and they began to hold the name of the Lord Jesus in high honour. |
Acts 19:18 | And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. | And many of those that believed came confessing and declaring their deeds. | Many also of those who believed came confessing without reserve what their conduct had been, |
Acts 19:19 | Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. | And many of those that practised curious arts brought their books [of charms] and burnt them before all. And they reckoned up the prices of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. | and not a few of those who had practised magical arts brought their books together and burnt them in the presence of all. The total value was reckoned and found to be 50,000 silver coins. |
Acts 19:20 | So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed. | Thus with might the word of the Lord increased and prevailed. | Thus mightily did the Lord's Message spread and triumph! |
Acts 19:21 | After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome. | And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in his spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, After I have been there I must see Rome also. | When matters had reached this point, Paul decided in his own mind to travel through Macedonia and Greece, and go to Jerusalem. "After that," he said, "I must also see Rome." |
Acts 19:22 | So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season. | And having sent into Macedonia two of those ministering to him, Timotheus and Erastus, he remained himself awhile in Asia. | But he sent two of his assistants, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he himself remained for a while in Roman Asia. |
Acts 19:23 | And the same time there arose no small stir about that way. | And there took place at that time no small disturbance about the way. | Now just at that time there arose no small commotion about the new faith. |
Acts 19:24 | For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen; | For a certain [man] by name Demetrius, a silver-beater, making silver temples of Artemis, brought no small gain to the artisans; | There was a certain Demetrius, a silversmith, who made miniature silver sanctuaries of Diana, a business which brought great gain to the mechanics in his employ. |
Acts 19:25 | Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth. | whom having brought together, and those who wrought in such things, he said, Men, ye know that our well-living arises from this work, | He called his workmen together, and others who were engaged in similar trades, and said to them, "You men well know that our prosperity depends on this business of ours; |
Acts 19:26 | Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands: | and ye see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great crowd, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying that they are no gods which are made with hands. | and you see and hear that, not in Ephesus only but throughout almost the whole province of Asia, this fellow Paul has led away a vast number of people by inducing them to believe that they are not gods at all that are made by men's hands. |
Acts 19:27 | So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. | Now not only there is danger for us that our business come into discredit, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be counted for nothing, and that her greatness should be destroyed whom the whole of Asia and the world reveres. | There is danger, therefore, not only that this our trade will become of no account, but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana will fall into utter disrepute, and that before long she will be actually deposed from her majestic rank she who is now worshipped by the whole province of Asia; nay, by the whole world." |
Acts 19:28 | And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. | And having heard [this], and being filled with rage, they cried out, saying, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians. | After listening to this harangue, they became furiously angry and kept calling out, "Great is the Ephesian Diana!" |
Acts 19:29 | And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. | And the [whole] city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord to the theatre, having seized and carried off with [them] Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, fellow-travellers of Paul. | The riot and uproar spread through the whole city, till at last with one accord they rushed into the Theatre, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, two Macedonians who were fellow travellers with Paul. |
Acts 19:30 | And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. | But Paul intending to go in to the people, the disciples suffered him not; | Then Paul would have liked to go in and address the people, but the disciples would not let him do so. |
Acts 19:31 | And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre. | and some of the Asiarchs also, who were his friends, sent to him and urged him not to throw himself into the theatre. | A few of the public officials, too, who were friendly to him, sent repeated messages entreating him not to venture into the Theatre. |
Acts 19:32 | Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together. | Different persons therefore cried out some different thing; for the assembly was tumultuous, and the most did not know for what cause they had come together. | The people, meanwhile, kept shouting, some one thing and some another; for the assembly was all uproar and confusion, and the greater part had no idea why they had come together. |
Acts 19:33 | And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people. | But from among the crowd they put forward Alexander, the Jews pushing him forward. And Alexander, beckoning with his hand, would have made a defence to the people. | Then some of the people crowded round Alexander, whom the Jews had pushed forward; and Alexander, motioning with his hand to get silence, was prepared to make a defence to the people. |
Acts 19:34 | But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. | But, recognising that he was a Jew, there was one cry from all, shouting for about two hours, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians. | No sooner, however, did they see that he was a Jew, than there arose from them all one roar of shouting, lasting about two hours. "Great is the Ephesian Diana," they said. |
Acts 19:35 | And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter? | And the townclerk, having quieted the crowd, said, Ephesians, what man is there then who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of Artemis the great, and of the [image] which fell down from heaven? | At length the Recorder quieted them down. "Men of Ephesus," he said, "who is there of all mankind that needs to be told that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Diana and of the image which fell down from Zeus? |
Acts 19:36 | Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly. | These things therefore being undeniable, it is necessary that ye should be calm and do nothing headlong. | These facts, then, being unquestioned, it becomes you to maintain your self-control and not act recklessly. |
Acts 19:37 | For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess. | For ye have brought these men, [who are] neither temple-plunderers, nor speak injuriously of your goddess. | For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess. |
Acts 19:38 | Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another. | If therefore Demetrius and the artisans who [are] with him have a matter against any one, the courts are being held, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another. | If, however, Demetrius and the mechanics who support his contention have a grievance against any one, there are Assize-days and there are Proconsuls: let the persons interested accuse one another. |
Acts 19:39 | But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly. | But if ye inquire anything concerning other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly. | But if you desire anything further, it will have to be settled in the regular assembly. |
Acts 19:40 | For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse. | For also we are in danger to be put in accusation for sedition for this [affair] of to-day, no cause existing in reference to which we shall be able to give a reason for this concourse. | For in connexion with to-day's proceedings there is danger of our being charged with attempted insurrection, there having been no real reason for this riot; nor shall we be able to justify the behaviour of this disorderly mob." |
Acts 19:41 | And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly. | And having said these things, he dismissed the assembly. | With these words he dismissed the assembly. |
