Matthew 3:1In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, Now in those days comes John the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,About this time John the Baptist made his appearance, preaching in the Desert of Judaea.
Matthew 3:2And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh."Repent," he said, "for the Kingdom of the Heavens is now close at hand."
Matthew 3:3For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. For this is he who has been spoken of through Esaias the prophet, saying, Voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: prepare ye the way of [the] Lord, make straight his paths.He it is who was spoken of through the Prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying aloud, `In the desert prepare ye a road for the Lord: make His highway straight.'"
Matthew 3:4And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. And John himself had his garment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and wild honey.This man John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a loincloth of leather; and he lived upon locusts and wild honey.
Matthew 3:5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the country round the Jordan,Then large numbers of people went out to him people from Jerusalem and from all Judaea, and from the whole of the Jordan valley
Matthew 3:6And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. and were baptised by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.and were baptized by him in the Jordan, making full confession of their sins.
Matthew 3:7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath?But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he exclaimed, "O vipers' brood, who has warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
Matthew 3:8Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentance.Therefore let your lives prove your change of heart;
Matthew 3:9And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. And do not think to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for [our] father; for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.and do not imagine that you can say to yourselves, `We have Abraham as our forefather,' for I tell you that God can raise up descendants for Abraham from these stones.
Matthew 3:10And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. And already the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.And already the axe is lying at the root of the trees, so that every tree which does not produce good fruit will quickly be hewn down and thrown into the fire.
Matthew 3:11I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: *I* indeed baptise you with water to repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not fit to bear; *he* shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire;I indeed am baptizing you in water on a profession of repentance; but He who is coming after me is mightier than I: His sandals I am not worthy to carry for a moment; He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire.
Matthew 3:12Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. whose winnowing fan [is] in his hand, and he shall thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and shall gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.His winnowing-shovel is in His hand, and He will make a thorough clearance of His threshing-floor, gathering His wheat into the storehouse, but burning up the chaff in unquenchable fire."
Matthew 3:13Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. Then comes Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptised of him;Just at that time Jesus, coming from Galilee to the Jordan, presents Himself to John to be baptized by him.
Matthew 3:14But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? but John urgently forbad him, saying, *I* have need to be baptised of thee; and comest *thou* to me?John protested. "It is I," he said, "who have need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"
Matthew 3:15And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. But Jesus answering said to him, Suffer [it] now; for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffers him."Let it be so on this occasion," Jesus replied; "for so we ought to fulfil every religious duty." Then he consented;
Matthew 3:16And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And Jesus, having been baptised, went up straightway from the water, and lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him:and Jesus was baptized, and immediately went up from the water. At that moment the heavens opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him,
Matthew 3:17And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. and behold, a voice out of the heavens saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I have found my delight.while a voice came from Heaven, saying, "This is My Son, the dearly loved, in whom is My delight."
