John 16:1 | These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. | These things have I spoken to you, that you may not be scandalized. | "These things I have spoken to you in order to clear stumbling-blocks out of your path. |
John 16:2 | They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. | They will put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you, will think that he doth a service to God. | You will be excluded from the synagogues; nay more, the time is coming when any one who has murdered one of you will suppose he is offering service to God. |
John 16:3 | And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. | And these things will they do to you; because they have not known the Father, nor me. | And they will do these things because they have failed to recognize the Father and to discover who I am. |
John 16:4 | But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you. | But these things I have told you, that when the hour shall come, you may remember that I told you of them. | But I have spoken these things to you in order that when the time for their accomplishment comes you may remember them, and may recollect that I told you. I did not, however, tell you all this at first, because I was still with you. |
John 16:5 | But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? | But I told you not these things from the beginning, because I was with you. And now I go to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me: Whither goest thou? | But now I an returning to Him who sent me; and not one of you asks me where I am going. |
John 16:6 | But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. | But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart. | But grief has filled your hearts because I have said all this to you. |
John 16:7 | Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. | But I tell you the truth: it is expedient to you that I go: for if I go not, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. | "Yet it is the truth that I am telling you it is to your advantage that I go away. For unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. |
John 16:8 | And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: | And when he is come, he will convince the world of sin, and of justice, and of judgment. | And He, when He comes, will convict the world in respect of sin, of righteousness, and of judgement; |
John 16:9 | Of sin, because they believe not on me; | Of sin: because they believed not in me. | of sin, because they do not believe in me; |
John 16:10 | Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; | And of justice: because I go to the Father; and you shall see me no longer. | of righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will no longer see me; |
John 16:11 | Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. | And of judgment: because the prince of this world is already judged. | of judgement, because the Prince of this world is under sentence. |
John 16:12 | I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. | I have yet many things to say to you: but you cannot bear them now. | "I have much more to say to you, but you are unable at present to bear the burden of it. |
John 16:13 | Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. | But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all truth. For he shall not speak of himself; but what things soever he shall hear, he shall speak; and the things that are to come, he shall shew you. | But when He has come the Spirit of Truth He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak as Himself originating what He says, but all that He hears He will speak, and He will make known the future to you. |
John 16:14 | He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. | He shall glorify me; because he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it to you. | He will glorify me, because He will take of what is mine and will make it known to you. |
John 16:15 | All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. | All things whatsoever the Father hath, are mine. Therefore I said, that he shall receive of mine, and shew it to you. | Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit of Truth takes of what is mine and will make it known to you. |
John 16:16 | A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. | A little while, and now you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me: because I go to the Father. | "A little while and you see me no more, and again a little while and you shall see me." |
John 16:17 | Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? | Then some of the disciples said one to another: What is this that he saith to us: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me, and, because I go to the Father? | Some of His disciples therefore said to one another, "What does this mean which He is telling us, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me,' and `Because I am going to the Father'?" |
John 16:18 | They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. | They said therefore: What is this that he saith, A little while? we know not what he speaketh. | So they asked one another repeatedly, "What can that `little while' mean which He speaks of? We do not understand His words." |
John 16:19 | Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? | And Jesus knew that they had a mind to ask him; and he said to them: Of this do you inquire among yourselves, because I said: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me? | Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask Him, and He said, "Is this what you are questioning one another about my saying, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me'? |
John 16:20 | Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. | Amen, amen I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice; and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. | In most solemn truth I tell you that you will weep aloud and lament, but the world will be glad. You will mourn, but your grief will be turned into gladness. |
John 16:21 | A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. | A woman, when she is in labour, hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she hath brought forth the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. | A woman, when she is in labour, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has given birth to the babe, she no longer remembers the pain, because of her joy at a child being born into the world. |
John 16:22 | And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. | So also you now indeed have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice; and your joy no man shall take from you. | So you also now have sorrow; but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and your gladness no one will take away from you. |
John 16:23 | And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. | And in that day you shall not ask me any thing. Amen, amen I say to you: if you ask the Father any thing in my name, he will give it you. | You will put no questions to me then. "In most solemn truth I tell you that whatever you ask the Father for in my name He will give you. |
John 16:24 | Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. | Hitherto you have not asked any thing in my name. Ask, and you shall receive; that your joy may be full. | As yet you have not asked for anything in my name: ask, and you shall receive, that your hearts may be filled with gladness. |
John 16:25 | These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. | These things I have spoken to you in proverbs. The hour cometh, when I will no more speak to you in proverbs, but will shew you plainly of the Father. | "All this I have spoken to you in veiled language. The time is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in veiled language, but will tell you about the Father in plain words. |
John 16:26 | At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: | In that day you shall ask in my name; and I say not to you, that I will ask the Father for you: | At that time you will make your requests in my name; and I do not promise to ask the Father on your behalf, |
John 16:27 | For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. | For the Father himself loveth you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. | for the Father Himself holds you dear, because you have held me dear and have believed that I came from the Father's presence. |
John 16:28 | I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. | I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again I leave the world, and I go to the Father. | I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again I am leaving the world and am going to the Father." |
John 16:29 | His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. | His disciples say to him: Behold, now thou speakest plainly, and speakest no proverb. | "Ah, now you are using plain language," said His disciples, "and are uttering no figure of speech! |
John 16:30 | Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. | Now we know that thou knowest all things, and thou needest not that any man should ask thee. By this we believe that thou camest forth from God. | Now we know that you have all knowledge, and do not need to be pressed with questions. Through this we believe that you came from God." |
John 16:31 | Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? | Jesus answered them: Do you now believe? | "Do you at last believe?" replied Jesus. |
John 16:32 | Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. | Behold, the hour cometh, and it is now come, that you shall be scattered every man to his own, and shall leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. | "Remember that the time is coming, nay, has already come, for you all to be dispersed each to his own home and to leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. |
John 16:33 | These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. | These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you shall have distress: but have confidence, I have overcome the world. | "I have spoken all this to you in order that in me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction. But keep up your courage: *I* have won the victory over the world." |
