John 12:1Then Jesus, six days before the passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.Jesus therefore six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised from the dead. Jesus, however, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was whom He had raised from the dead.
John 12:2There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.So they made him a supper there: and Martha served; but Lazarus was one of them that sat at meat with him. So they gave a dinner there in honour of Jesus, at which Martha waited at table, but Lazarus was one of the guests who were with Him.
John 12:3Then Mary took a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment.Mary therefore took a pound of ointment of pure nard, very precious, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment. Availing herself of the opportunity, Mary took a pound weight of pure spikenard, very costly, and poured it over His feet, and wiped His feet with her hair, so that the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
John 12:4Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who was to betray him,But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, that should betray him, saith, Then said Judas (the Iscariot, one of the Twelve the one who afterwards betrayed Jesus),
John 12:5Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred shillings, and given to the poor? "Why was not that perfume sold for 300 shillings and the money given to the poor?"
John 12:6This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bore what was put in it.Now this he said, not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and having the bag took away what was put therein. The reason he said this was not that he cared for the poor, but that he was a thief, and that being in charge of the money-box, he used to steal what was put into it.
John 12:7Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burial hath she kept this.Jesus therefore said, Suffer her to keep it against the day of my burying. But Jesus interposed. "Do not blame her," He said, "allow her to have kept it for the time of my preparation for burial.
John 12:8For the poor ye have always with you; but me ye have not always.For the poor ye have always with you; but me ye have not always. For the poor you always have with you, but you have not me always."
John 12:9Many people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.The common people therefore of the Jews learned that he was there: and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. Now it became widely known among the Jews that Jesus was there; but they came not only on His account, but also in order to see Lazarus whom He had brought back to life.
John 12:10But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;But the chief priests took counsel that they might put Lazarus also to death; The High Priests, however, consulted together to put Lazarus also to death,
John 12:11Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. for because of him many of the Jews left them and became believers in Jesus.
John 12:12On the next day, many people that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,On the morrow a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, The next day a great crowd of those who had come to the Festival, hearing that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
John 12:13Took branches of palm-trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna; Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.took the branches of the palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried out, Hosanna: Blessed [is] he that cometh in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel. took branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, shouting as they went, "God save him! Blessings on him who comes in the name of the Lord even on the King of Israel!"
John 12:14And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,And Jesus, having found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, And Jesus, having procured a young ass, sat upon it, just as the Scripture says,
John 12:15Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.Fear not, daughter of Zion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. "Fear not, Daughter of Zion! See, thy King is coming riding on an ass's colt."
John 12:16These things his disciples understood not at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written concerning him, and that they had done these things to him.These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. The meaning of this His disciples did not understand at the time; but after Jesus was glorified they recollected that this was written about Him, and that they had done this to Him.
John 12:17The people therefore that were with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bore testimony.The multitude therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him from the dead, bare witness. The large number of people, however, who had been present when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and brought him back to life, related what they had witnessed.
John 12:18For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.For this cause also the multitude went and met him, for that they heard that he had done this sign. This was also why the crowd came to meet Him, because they had heard of His having performed that miracle.
John 12:19The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Behold how ye prevail nothing: lo, the world is gone after him. The result was that the Pharisees said among themselves, "Observe how idle all your efforts are! The world is gone after him!"
John 12:20And there were certain Greeks among them, that came to worship at the feast.Now there were certain Greeks among those that went up to worship at the feast: Now some of those who used to come up to worship at the Festival were Greeks.
John 12:21The same came therefore to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.these therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. They came to Philip, of Bethsaida in Galilee, with the request, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus."
John 12:22Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again, Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: Andrew cometh, and Philip, and they tell Jesus. Philip came and told Andrew: Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
John 12:23And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.And Jesus answereth them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. His answer was, "The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
John 12:24Verily, verily, I say to you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die, it abideth by itself alone; but if it die, it beareth much fruit. In most solemn truth I tell you that unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains what it was a single grain; but that if it dies, it yields a rich harvest.
John 12:25He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, shall keep it to life eternal.He that loveth his life loseth it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. He who holds his life dear, is destroying it; and he who makes his life of no account in this world shall keep it to the Life of the Ages.
John 12:26If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honor.If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will the Father honor. If a man wishes to be my servant, let him follow me; and where I am, there too shall my servant be. If a man wishes to be my servant, the Father will honour him.
John 12:27Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause I came to this hour.Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this cause came I unto this hour. Now is my soul full of trouble; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this purpose I have come to this hour.
John 12:28Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.Father, glorify thy name. There came therefore a voice out of heaven, [saying], I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. Father, glorify Thy name." Thereupon there came a voice from the sky, "I have glorified it and will also glorify it again."
John 12:29The people therefore that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered. Others said, An angel spoke to him.The multitude therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it had thundered: others said, An angel hath spoken to him. The crowd that stood by and heard it, said that there had been thunder. Others said, "An angel spoke to him."
John 12:30Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.Jesus answered and said, This voice hath not come for my sake, but for your sakes. "It is not for my sake," said Jesus, "that that voice came, but for your sakes.
John 12:31Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. Now is a judgement of this world: now will the Prince of this world be driven out.
John 12:32And I, if I shall be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to me.And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto myself. And I if I am lifted up from the earth will draw all men to me."
John 12:33(This he said, signifying what death he should die.)But this he said, signifying by what manner of death he should die. He said this to indicate the kind of death He would die.
John 12:34The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?The multitude therefore answered him, We have heard out of the law that the Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? The crowd answered Him, "We have heard out of the Law that the Christ remains for ever. In what sense do you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is that Son of Man?"
John 12:35Then Jesus said to them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.Jesus therefore said unto them, Yet a little while is the light among you. Walk while ye have the light, that darkness overtake you not: and he that walketh in the darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. "Yet a little while," He replied, "the light is among you. Be faithful to the light that you have, for fear darkness should overtake you; for a man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going.
John 12:36While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spoke Jesus, and departed, and concealed himself from them.While ye have the light, believe on the light, that ye may become sons of light. These things spake Jesus, and he departed and hid himself from them. In the degree that you have light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light." Jesus said this, and went away and hid Himself from them.
John 12:37But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they believed not on him: But though He had performed such great miracles in their presence, they did not believe in Him
John 12:38That the saying of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? And to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? in order that the words of Isaiah the Prophet might be fulfilled, "Lord, who has believed our preaching? And the arm of the Lord to whom has it been unveiled?"
John 12:39Therefore they could not believe, because that Isaiah said again,For this cause they could not believe, for that Isaiah said again, For this reason they were unable to believe because Isaiah said again,
John 12:40He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.He hath blinded their eyes, and he hardened their heart; Lest they should see with their eyes, and perceive with their heart, And should turn, And I should heal them. "He has blinded their eyes and made their minds callous, lest they should see with their eyes and perceive with their minds, and should turn, and I should heal them."
John 12:41These things said Isaiah, when he saw his glory, and spoke of him.These things said Isaiah, because he saw his glory; and he spake of him. Isaiah uttered these words because he saw His glory; and he spoke of Him.
John 12:42Nevertheless, among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:Nevertheless even of the rulers many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess [it], lest they should be put out of the synagogue: Nevertheless even from among the Rulers many believed in Him. But because of the Pharisees they did not avow their belief, for fear they should be shut out from the synagogue.
John 12:43For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.for they loved the glory [that is] of men more than the glory [that is] of God. For they loved the glory that comes from men rather than the glory that comes from God.
John 12:44Jesus cried, and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me:And Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. But Jesus cried aloud, "He who believes in me, believes not so much in me, as in Him who sent me;
John 12:45And he that seeth me, seeth him that sent me:And he that beholdeth me beholdeth him that sent me. and he who sees me sees Him who sent me.
John 12:46I am come a light into the world, that whoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me may not abide in the darkness. I have come like light into the world, in order that no one who believes in me may remain in the dark.
John 12:47And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.And if any man hear my sayings, and keep them not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. And if any one hears my teachings and regards them not, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
John 12:48He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my sayings, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I spake, the same shall judge him in the last day. He who sets me at naught and does not receive my teachings is not left without a judge: the Message which I have spoken will judge him on the last day.
John 12:49For I have not spoken from myself; but the Father who sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.For I spake not from myself; but the Father that sent me, he hath given me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. Because I have not spoken on my own authority; but the Father who sent me, Himself gave me a command what to say and in what words to speak.
John 12:50And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatever I speak therefore, even as the Father said to me, so I speak.And I know that his commandment is life eternal: the things therefore which I speak, even as the Father hath said unto me, so I speak. And I know that His command is the Life of the Ages. What therefore I speak, I speak just as the Father has bidden me."
