John 13:1 | Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. | Now before the feast of the Passover, it was clear to Jesus that the time had come for him to go away from this world to the Father. Having once had love for those in the world who were his, his love for them went on to the end. | Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come that he should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end. |
John 13:2 | And supper being ended (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;) | So while a meal was going on, the Evil One having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to be false to him, | And during supper, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote, that he should deliver him up, |
John 13:3 | Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God, and was going to God; | Jesus, being conscious that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he came from God and was going to God, | [Jesus,] knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came out from God and was going to God, |
John 13:4 | He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. | Got up from table, put off his robe and took a cloth and put it round him. | rises from supper and lays aside his garments, and having taken a linen towel he girded himself: |
John 13:5 | After that, he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. | Then he put water into a basin and was washing the feet of the disciples and drying them with the cloth which was round him. | then he pours water into the washhand basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the linen towel with which he was girded. |
John 13:6 | Then he cometh to Simon Peter: and Peter saith to him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? | So he came to Simon Peter. Peter said, Lord, are my feet to be washed by you? | He comes therefore to Simon Peter; and *he* says to him, Lord, dost thou wash *my* feet? |
John 13:7 | Jesus answered and said to him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. | And Jesus, answering, said to him, What I do is not clear to you now, but it will be clear to you in time to come. | Jesus answered and said to him, What I do thou dost not know now, but thou shalt know hereafter. |
John 13:8 | Peter saith to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. | Peter said, I will never let my feet be washed by you, never. Jesus said in answer, If I do not make you clean you have no part with me. | Peter says to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash thee, thou hast not part with me. |
John 13:9 | Simon Peter saith to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. | Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but my hands and my head. | Simon Peter says to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. |
John 13:10 | Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is wholly clean: and ye are clean, but not all. | Jesus said to him, He who is bathed has need only to have his feet washed and then he is clean all over: and you, my disciples, are clean, but not all of you. | Jesus says to him, He that is washed all over needs not to wash save his feet, but is wholly clean; and ye are clean, but not all. |
John 13:11 | For he knew who would betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. | (He had knowledge who was false to him; that is why he said, You are not all clean.) | For he knew him that delivered him up: on account of this he said, Ye are not all clean. |
John 13:12 | So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said to them, Know ye what I have done to you? | Then, after washing their feet and putting on his robe again, he took his seat and said to them, Do you see what I have done to you? | When therefore he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, having sat down again, he said to them, Do ye know what I have done to you? |
John 13:13 | Ye call me Master, and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. | You give me the name of Master and Lord: and you are right; that is what I am. | Ye call me the Teacher and the Lord, and ye say well, for I am [so]. |
John 13:14 | If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. | If then I, the Lord and the Master, have made your feet clean, it is right for you to make one another's feet clean. | If I therefore, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet; |
John 13:15 | For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. | I have given you an example, so that you may do what I have done to you. | for I have given you an example that, as I have done to you, ye should do also. |
John 13:16 | Verily, verily, I say to you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. | Truly I say to you, A servant is not greater than his lord; and he who is sent is not greater than the one who sent him. | Verily, verily, I say to you, The bondman is not greater than his lord, nor the sent greater than he who has sent him. |
John 13:17 | If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. | If these things are clear to you, happy are you if you do them. | If ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them. |
John 13:18 | I speak not of you all; I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me, hath lifted up his heel against me. | I am not talking of you all: I have knowledge of my true disciples, but things are as they are, so that the Writings may come true, The foot of him who takes bread with me is lifted up against me. | I speak not of you all. I know those whom I have chosen; but that the scripture might be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me. |
John 13:19 | Now I tell you before it cometh, that when it hath come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. | From this time forward, I give you knowledge of things before they come about, so that when they come about you may have belief that I am he. | I tell you [it] now before it happens, that when it happens, ye may believe that I am [he]. |
John 13:20 | Verily, verily, I say to you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. | Truly I say to you, He who takes to his heart anyone whom I send, takes me to his heart; and he who so takes me, takes him who sent me. | Verily, verily, I say to you, He who receives whomsoever I shall send receives me; and he that receives me receives him who has sent me. |
John 13:21 | When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you will betray me. | When Jesus had said this he was troubled in spirit, and gave witness, saying, Truly I say to you, that one of you will be false to me. | Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up. |
John 13:22 | Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke. | Then the eyes of the disciples were turned on one another, in doubt as to whom he had in mind. | The disciples therefore looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke. |
John 13:23 | Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom, one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. | There was at table one of his disciples, the one dear to Jesus, resting his head on Jesus' breast. | Now there was at table one of his disciples in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus loved. |
John 13:24 | Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, to ask who it should be of whom he spoke. | Making a sign to him, Simon Peter said, Who is it he is talking about? | Simon Peter makes a sign therefore to him to ask who it might be of whom he spoke. |
John 13:25 | He then lying on Jesus' breast, saith to him, Lord, who is it? | He, then, resting his head on Jesus' breast, said to him, Lord, who is it? | But he, leaning on the breast of Jesus, says to him, Lord, who is it? |
John 13:26 | Jesus answered, He it is to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. | This was the answer Jesus gave: It is the one to whom I will give this bit of bread after I have put it in the vessel. Then he took the bit of bread, put it into the vessel, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. | Jesus answers, He it is to whom I, after I have dipped the morsel, give it. And having dipped the morsel, he gives it to Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote. |
John 13:27 | And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus to him, What thou doest, do quickly. | And when Judas took the bread Satan went into him. Then Jesus said to him, Do quickly what you have to do. | And, after the morsel, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore says to him, What thou doest, do quickly. |
John 13:28 | Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spoke this to him. | Now it was not clear to anyone at table why he said this to him. | But none of those at table knew why he said this to him; |
John 13:29 | For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said to him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. | Some were of the opinion that because Judas kept the money-bag Jesus said to him, Get the things we have need of for the feast; or, that he was to give something to the poor. | for some supposed, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus was saying to him, Buy the things of which we have need for the feast; or that he should give something to the poor. |
John 13:30 | He then having received the sop, went immediately out: and it was night. | So Judas, having taken the bit of bread, straight away went out: and it was night. | Having therefore received the morsel, he went out immediately; and it was night. |
John 13:31 | Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. | Then when he had gone out, Jesus said, Now is glory given to the Son of man, and God is given glory in him. | When therefore he was gone out Jesus says, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. |
John 13:32 | If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and will immediately glorify him. | If God is given glory in him, God will give him glory in himself, and will give him glory even now. | If God be glorified in him, God also shall glorify him in himself, and shall glorify him immediately. |
John 13:33 | Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye will seek me: and, as I said to the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. | My dear children, I am only to be with you a little longer. Then you will be looking for me: and as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you, Where I am going you may not come. | Children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me; and, as I said to the Jews, Where I go ye cannot come, I say to you also now. |
John 13:34 | A new commandment I give to you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. | I give you a new law: Have love one for another; even as I have had love for you, so are you to have love one for another. | A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. |
John 13:35 | By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. | By this it will be clear to all men that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another. | By this shall all know that ye are disciples of mine, if ye have love amongst yourselves. |
John 13:36 | Simon Peter said to him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterward. | Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus said in answer, Where I am going you may not come with me now, but you will come later. | Simon Peter says to him, Lord, where goest thou? Jesus answered him, Where I go thou canst not follow me now, but thou shalt follow me after. |
John 13:37 | Peter said to him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. | Peter said to him, Why may I not come with you even now? I will give up my life for you. | Peter says to him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee. |
John 13:38 | Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say to thee, The cock will not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. | Jesus said in answer, Will you give up your life for me? Truly I say to you, Before the cry of the cock you will have said three times that you are not my disciple. | Jesus answers, Thou wilt lay down thy life for me! Verily, verily, I say to thee, The cock shall not crow till thou hast denied me thrice. |
