Matthew 3:1 | In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, | And in those days John the Baptist came preaching in the waste land of Judaea, | Now in those days comes John the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, |
Matthew 3:2 | And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. | Saying, Let your hearts be turned from sin; for the kingdom of heaven is near. | and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh. |
Matthew 3:3 | For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. | For this is he of whom Isaiah the prophet said, The voice of one crying in the waste land, Make ready the way of the Lord, make his roads straight. | For this is he who has been spoken of through Esaias the prophet, saying, Voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: prepare ye the way of [the] Lord, make straight his paths. |
Matthew 3:4 | And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey. | Now John was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather band about him; and his food was locusts and honey. | And John himself had his garment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and wild honey. |
Matthew 3:5 | Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region about Jordan, | Then Jerusalem and all Judaea went out to him, and all the people from near Jordan; | Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the country round the Jordan, |
Matthew 3:6 | And were baptized by him in Jordan, confessing their sins. | And they were given baptism by him in the river Jordan, saying openly that they had done wrong. | and were baptised by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. |
Matthew 3:7 | But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said to them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? | But when he saw a number of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, Offspring of snakes, at whose word are you going in flight from the wrath to come? | But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath? |
Matthew 3:8 | Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: | Let your change of heart be seen in your works: | Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentance. |
Matthew 3:9 | And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father: for I say to you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. | And say not to yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; because I say to you that God is able from these stones to make children for Abraham. | And do not think to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for [our] father; for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. |
Matthew 3:10 | And now also the ax is laid to the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. | And even now the axe is put to the root of the trees; every tree then which does not give good fruit is cut down, and put into the fire. | And already the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. |
Matthew 3:11 | I indeed baptize you with water to repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire: | Truly, I give baptism with water to those of you whose hearts are changed; but he who comes after me is greater than I, whose shoes I am not good enough to take up: he will give you baptism with the Holy Spirit and with fire: | *I* indeed baptise you with water to repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not fit to bear; *he* shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire; |
Matthew 3:12 | Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and gather his wheat into the granary; but he will burn the chaff with unquenchable fire. | In whose hand is the instrument with which he will make clean his grain; he will put the good grain in his store, but the waste will be burned up in the fire which will never be put out. | whose winnowing fan [is] in his hand, and he shall thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and shall gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. |
Matthew 3:13 | Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. | Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be given baptism by him. | Then comes Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptised of him; |
Matthew 3:14 | But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me? | But John would have kept him back, saying, It is I who have need of baptism from you, and do you come to me? | but John urgently forbad him, saying, *I* have need to be baptised of thee; and comest *thou* to me? |
Matthew 3:15 | And Jesus answering said to him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him. | But Jesus made answer, saying to him, Let it be so now: because so it is right for us to make righteousness complete. Then he gave him baptism. | But Jesus answering said to him, Suffer [it] now; for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffers him. |
Matthew 3:16 | And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up immediately out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: | And Jesus, having been given baptism, straight away went up from the water; and, the heavens opening, he saw the Spirit of God coming down on him as a dove; | And Jesus, having been baptised, went up straightway from the water, and lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him: |
Matthew 3:17 | And lo, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. | And a voice came out of heaven, saying, This is my dearly loved Son, with whom I am well pleased. | and behold, a voice out of the heavens saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I have found my delight. |
