Acts 12:1Now about that time, Herod the king stretched forth his hands to afflict certain of the church.At that time Herod the king laid his hands on some of those of the assembly to do them hurt,Now, about that time, King Herod arrested certain members of the Church, in order to ill-treat them;
Acts 12:2And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.and slew James, the brother of John, with the sword.and James, John's brother, he beheaded.
Acts 12:3And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. Then were the days of unleavened bread.And seeing that it was pleasing to the Jews, he went on to take Peter also: (and they were the days of unleavened bread:)Finding that this gratified the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also; these being the days of Unleavened Bread.
Acts 12:4And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after the passover to bring him forth to the people.whom having seized he put in prison, having delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep, purposing after the passover to bring him out to the people.He had him arrested and lodged in jail, handing him over to the care of sixteen soldiers; and intended after the Passover to bring him out again to the people.
Acts 12:5Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing by the church to God for him.Peter therefore was kept in the prison; but unceasing prayer was made by the assembly to God concerning him.So Peter was kept in prison; but long and fervent prayer was offered to God by the Church on his behalf.
Acts 12:6And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains; and the keepers before the door kept the prison.And when Herod was going to bring him forth, that night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards before the door kept the prison.Now when Herod was on the point of taking him out of prison, that very night Peter was asleep between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards were on duty outside the door.
Acts 12:7And behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison; and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.And lo, an angel of [the] Lord came there, and a light shone in the prison: and having smitten the side of Peter, he roused him up, saying, Rise up quickly. And his chains fell off his hands.Suddenly an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the cell; and, striking Peter on the side, he woke him and said, "Rise quickly." Instantly the chains dropped off his wrists.
Acts 12:8And the angel said to him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals; and so he did. And he saith to him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.And the angel said to him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And he did so. And he says to him, Cast thine upper garment about thee and follow me."Fasten your girdle," said the angel, "and tie on your sandals." He did so. Then the angel said, "Throw your cloak round you, and follow me."
Acts 12:9And he went out, and followed him, and knew not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.And going forth he followed [him] and did not know that what was happening by means of the angel was real, but supposed he saw a vision.So Peter went out, following him, yet could not believe that what the angel was doing was real, but supposed that he saw a vision.
Acts 12:10When they were past the first and the second ward, they came to the iron gate that leadeth to the city; which opened to them of its own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.And having passed through a first and second guard, they came to the iron gate which leads into the city, which opened to them of itself; and going forth they went down one street, and immediately the angel left him.And passing through the first ward and the second, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. This opened to them of itself; and, going out, they passed on through one of the streets, and then suddenly the angel left him.
Acts 12:11And when Peter had come to himself, he said, Now I know with certainty, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.And Peter, being come to himself, said, Now I know certainly that [the] Lord has sent forth his angel and has taken me out of the hand of Herod and all the expectation of the people of the Jews.Peter coming to himself said, "Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel and has rescued me from the power of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were anticipating."
Acts 12:12And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John whose surname was Mark; where many were assembled, praying.And having become clearly conscious [in himself], he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was surnamed Mark, where were many gathered together and praying.So, after thinking things over, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John surnamed Mark, where a large number of people were assembled, praying.
Acts 12:13And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.And when he had knocked at the door of the entry, a maid came to listen, by name Rhoda;When he knocked at the wicket in the door, a maidservant named Rhoda came to answer the knock;
Acts 12:14And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told that Peter stood before the gateand having recognised the voice of Peter, through joy did not open the entry, but running in, reported that Peter was standing before the entry.and recognizing Peter's voice, for very joy she did not open the door, but ran in and told them that Peter was standing there.
Acts 12:15And they said to her, Thou art insane. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then they said, It is his angel.And they said to her, Thou art mad. But she maintained that it was so. And they said, It is his angel."You are mad," they said. But she strenuously maintained that it was true. "It is his guardian angel," they said.
Acts 12:16But Peter continued knocking. And when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.But Peter continued knocking: and having opened, they saw him and were astonished.Meanwhile Peter went on knocking, until at last they opened the door and saw that it was really he, and were filled with amazement.
Acts 12:17But he beckoning to them with the hand to hold their peace, declared to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go, show these things to James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.And having made a sign to them with his hand to be silent, he related [to them] how the Lord had brought him out of prison; and he said, Report these things to James and to the brethren. And he went out and went to another place.But he motioned with his hand for silence, and then described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. "Tell all this to James and the brethren," he added. Then he left them, and went to another place.
Acts 12:18Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.And when it was day there was no small disturbance among the soldiers, what then was become of Peter.When morning came, there was no little commotion among the soldiers, as to what could possibly have become of Peter.
Acts 12:19And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judea to Cesarea, and there abode.And Herod having sought him and not found him, having examined the guards, commanded [them] to be executed. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea and stayed [there].And when Herod had had him searched for and could not find him, after sharply questioning the guards he ordered them away to execution. He then went down from Judaea to Caesarea and remained there.
Acts 12:20And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon. But they came with one accord to him, and having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace, because their country was nourished by the king's country.And he was in bitter hostility with [the] Tyrians and Sidonians; but they came to him with one accord, and, having gained Blastus the king's chamberlain, sought peace, because their country was nourished by the king's.Now the people of Tyre and Sidon had incurred Herod's violent displeasure. So they sent a large deputation to wait on him; and having secured the good will of Blastus, his treasurer, they begged the king to be friendly with them again, because their country was dependent on his for its food supply.
Acts 12:21And upon a set day, Herod arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration to them.And on a set day, clothed in royal apparel and sitting on the elevated seat [of honour], Herod made a public oration to them.So, on an appointed day, Herod, having arrayed himself in royal robes, took his seat on the tribunal, and was haranguing them;
Acts 12:22And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.And the people cried out, A god's voice and not a man's.and the assembled people kept shouting, "It is the voice of a god, and not of a man!"
Acts 12:23And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten by worms, and died.And immediately an angel of [the] Lord smote him, because he did not give the glory to God, and he expired, eaten of worms.Instantly an angel of the Lord struck him, because he had not given the glory to God, and being eaten up by worms, he died.
Acts 12:24But the word of God grew and multiplied.But the word of God grew and spread itself.But God's Message prospered, and converts were multiplied.
Acts 12:25And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, having fulfilled the service [entrusted to them], taking also with them John, surnamed Mark.And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, having discharged their mission, and they brought with them John, surnamed Mark.
