| Genesis 42:1 | Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, Why do ye look one upon another? | And Jacob hearing that food was sold in Egypt, said to his sons: Why are ye careless? | Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, "Why do you look at one another?" |
| Genesis 42:2 | And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: go down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die. | I have heard that wheat is sold in Egypt: go ye down, and buy us necessaries, that we may live, and not be consumed with want. | He said, "Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there, and buy for us from there, so that we may live, and not die." |

They answered: From the land of Chanaan, to buy necessaries of life. | Joseph saw his brothers, and he recognized them, but acted like a stranger to them, and spoke roughly with them. He said to them, "Where did you come from?" They said, "From the land of Canaan to buy food." |

Therefore this distress has come on us." |
