John 5:1 | After this there was a feast of the Jews: and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | After this there was a Festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | After these things there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
John 5:2 | Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue, Bethesda, having five porches. | Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, called in Hebrew `Bethesda.' It has five arcades. | Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep [gate] a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches. |
John 5:3 | In these lay a great multitude of impotent persons, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. | In these there used to lie a great number of sick persons, and of people who were blind or lame or paralyzed. | In these lay a multitude of them that were sick, blind, halt, withered, [waiting for the moving of the water.] |
John 5:4 | For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and agitated the water: whoever then first after the stirring of the water stepped in, was cured of whatever disease he had. | [] | [for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the waters stepped in was made whole, with whatsoever disease he was holden.] |
John 5:5 | And a certain man was there, who had an infirmity thirty and eight years. | And there was one man there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. | And a certain man was there, who had been thirty and eight years in his infirmity. |
John 5:6 | When Jesus saw him lying, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith to him, Wilt thou be healed? | Jesus saw him lying there, and knowing that he had been a long time in that condition, He asked him, "Do you wish to have health and strength?" | When Jesus saw him lying, and knew that he had been now a long time [in that case], he saith unto him, Wouldest thou be made whole? |
John 5:7 | The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is agitated, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. | "Sir," replied the sufferer, "I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is moved; but while I am coming some one else steps down before me." | The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. |
John 5:8 | Jesus saith to him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. | "Rise," said Jesus, "take up your mat and walk." | Jesus saith unto him, Arise, take up thy bed, and walk. |
John 5:9 | And immediately the man was healed, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. | Instantly the man was restored to perfect health, and he took up his mat and began to walk. | And straightway the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked. Now it was the sabbath on that day. |
John 5:10 | The Jews therefore said to him that was cured, it is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. | That day was a Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, "It is the Sabbath: you must not carry your mat." | So the Jews said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed. |
John 5:11 | He answered them, He that healed me, the same said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk. | "He who cured me," he replied, "said to me, `Take up your mat and walk.'" | But he answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. |
John 5:12 | Then they asked him, What man is that who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? | "Who is it," they asked, "that said to you, `Take up your mat and walk'?" | They asked him, Who is the man that said unto thee, Take up [thy bed], and walk? |
John 5:13 | And he that was healed knew not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. | But the man who had been cured did not know who it was; for Jesus had passed out unnoticed, there being a crowd in the place. | But he that was healed knew not who it was; for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in the place. |
John 5:14 | Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, thou art cured: sin no more, lest a worse thing come to thee. | Afterwards Jesus found him in the Temple and said to him, "You are now restored to health. Do not sin any more, or a worse thing may befall you." | Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing befall thee. |
John 5:15 | The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. | The man went and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had restored him to health; | The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole. |
John 5:16 | And therefore the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath. | and on this account the Jews began to persecute Jesus because He did these things on the Sabbath. | And for this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. |
John 5:17 | But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. | His reply to their accusation was, "My Father works unceasingly, and so do I." | But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh even until now, and I work. |
John 5:18 | Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. | On this account then the Jews were all the more eager to put Him to death because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also spoke of God as being in a special sense His Father, thus putting Himself on a level with God. | For this cause therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only brake the sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God. |
John 5:19 | Then answered Jesus, and said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son can do nothing by himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for whatever things he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that the Son can do nothing of Himself He can only do what He sees the Father doing; for whatever He does, that the Son does in like manner. | Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doeth, these the Son also doeth in like manner. |
John 5:20 | For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and he will show him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. | For the Father loves the Son and reveals to Him all that He Himself is doing. And greater deeds than these will He reveal to Him, in order that you may wonder. | For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and greater works than these will he show him, that ye may marvel. |
John 5:21 | For as the Father raiseth the dead, and reviveth them; even so the Son reviveth whom he will. | For just as the Father awakens the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom He wills. | For as the Father raiseth the dead and giveth them life, even so the Son also giveth life to whom he will. |
John 5:22 | For the Father judgeth no man; but hath committed all judgment to the Son: | The Father indeed does not judge any one, but He has entrusted all judgement to the Son, | For neither doth the Father judge any man, but he hath given all judgment unto the Son; |
John 5:23 | That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son, honoreth not the Father who hath sent him. | that all may honour the Son even as they honour the Father. The man who withholds honour from the Son withholds honour from the Father who sent Him. | that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father that sent him. |
John 5:24 | Verily, verily, I say to you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but hath passed from death to life. | "In most solemn truth I tell you that he who listens to my teaching and believes Him who sent me, has the Life of the Ages, and does not come under judgement, but has passed over out of death into Life. | Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life. |
John 5:25 | Verily, verily, I say to you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. | "In most solemn truth I tell you that a time is coming nay, has already come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live. | Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live. |
John 5:26 | For as the Father hath life in himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; | For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has also given to the Son to have life in Himself. | For as the Father hath life in himself, even so gave he to the Son also to have life in himself: |
John 5:27 | And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. | And He has conferred on Him authority to act as Judge, because He is the Son of Man. | and he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man. |
John 5:28 | Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, | Wonder not at this. For a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice and will come forth | Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice, |
John 5:29 | And shall come forth; they that have done good to the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, to the resurrection of damnation. | they who have done what is right to the resurrection of Life, and they whose actions have been evil to the resurrection of judgement. | and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment. |
John 5:30 | I can of my own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who hath sent me. | "I can of my own self do nothing. As I am bidden, so I judge; and mine is a just judgement, because it is not my own will that guides me, but the will of Him who sent me. | I can of myself do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is righteous; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. |
John 5:31 | If I testify concerning myself, my testimony is not true. | "If I give testimony concerning myself, my testimony cannot be accepted. | If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. |
John 5:32 | There is another that testifieth concerning me, and I know that the testimony which he beareth concerning me is true. | There is Another who gives testimony concerning me, and I know that the testimony is true which He offers concerning me. | It is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. |
John 5:33 | Ye sent to John, and he testified to the truth. | "You sent to John, and he both was and still is a witness to the truth. | Ye have sent unto John, and he hath borne witness unto the truth. |
John 5:34 | But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye may be saved. | But the testimony on my behalf which I accept is not from man; though I say all this in order that you may be saved. | But the witness which I receive is not from man: howbeit I say these things, that ye may be saved. |
John 5:35 | He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. | He was the lamp that burned and shone, and for a time you were willing to be gladdened by his light. | He was the lamp that burneth and shineth; and ye were willing to rejoice for a season in his light. |
John 5:36 | But I have greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear testimony concerning me, that the Father hath sent me. | "But the testimony which I have is weightier than that of John; for the work the Father has assigned to me for me to bring it to completion the very work which I am doing affords testimony concerning me that the Father has sent me. | But the witness which I have is greater than [that of] John; for the works which the Father hath given me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. |
John 5:37 | And the Father himself who hath sent me, hath borne testimony concerning me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. | And the Father who sent me, *He* has given testimony concerning me. None of you have ever either heard His voice or seen what He is like. | And the Father that sent me, he hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form. |
John 5:38 | And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. | Nor have you His word dwelling within you, for you refuse to believe Him whom *He* has sent. | And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not. |
John 5:39 | Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. | "You search the Scriptures, because you suppose that in them you will find the Life of the Ages; and it is those Scriptures that yield testimony concerning me; | Ye search the scriptures, because ye think that in them ye have eternal life; and these are they which bear witness of me; |
John 5:40 | And ye will not come to me, that ye may have life. | and yet you are unwilling to come to me that you may have Life. | and ye will not come to me, that ye may have life. |
John 5:41 | I receive not honor from men. | "I do not accept glory from man, | I receive not glory from men. |
John 5:42 | But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. | but I know you well, and I know that in your hearts you do not really love God. | But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in yourselves. |
John 5:43 | I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. | I have come as my Father's representative, and you do not receive me. If some one else comes representing only himself, him you will receive. | I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. |
John 5:44 | How can ye believe, who receive honor one from another, and seek not the honor that cometh from God only? | How is it possible for you to believe, while you receive glory from one another and have no desire for the glory that comes from the only God? | How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and the glory that [cometh] from the only God ye seek not? |
John 5:45 | Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. | "Do not suppose that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, namely Moses, on whom your hope rests. | Think not that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, [even] Moses, on whom ye have set your hope. |
John 5:46 | For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote concerning me. | For if you believe Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. | For if ye believed Moses, ye would believe me; for he wrote of me. |
John 5:47 | But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? | But if you disbelieve his writings, how are you to believe my words?" | But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? |
