Acts 21:1And it came to pass, that after we were separated from them, and had lanched, we came with a straight course to Coos, and the day following to Rhodes, and from thence to Patara:When, at last, we had torn ourselves away and had set sail, we ran in a straight course to Cos; the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara. And after parting from them, we put out to sea and came straight to Cos, and the day after to Rhodes, and from there to Patara:
Acts 21:2And finding a ship sailing over to Phenicia, we went aboard, and set forth.Finding a ship bound for Phoenicia, we went on board and put to sea.And as there was a ship going to Phoenicia, we went in it.
Acts 21:3Now when we had discovered Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the ship was to unlade her burden. After sighting Cyprus and leaving that island on our left, we continued our voyage to Syria and put in at Tyre; for there the ship was to unload her cargo. And when we had come in view of Cyprus, going past it on our left, we went on to Syria, and came to land at Tyre: for there the goods which were in the ship had to be taken out.
Acts 21:4And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.Having searched for the disciples and found them, we stayed at Tyre for seven days; and, taught by the Spirit, they repeatedly urged Paul not to proceed to Jerusalem. And meeting the disciples we were there for seven days: and they gave Paul orders through the Spirit not to go up to Jerusalem.
Acts 21:5And when we had accomplished those days, we departed, and proceeded on our way; and they all conducted us with wives and children, till we were out of the city; and we kneeled down on the shore, and prayed. When, however, our time was up, we left and went on our way, all the disciples and their wives and children coming to see us off. Then, after kneeling down on the beach and praying,And when these days came to an end, we went on our journey; and they all, with their wives and children, came with us on our way till we were out of the town: and after going on our knees in prayer by the sea,
Acts 21:6And when we had taken our leave one of another, we took ship; and they returned home again.we took leave of one another; and we went on board, while they returned home.We said our last words to one another, and got into the ship, and they went back to their houses.
Acts 21:7And when we had finished our course from Tyre, we came to Ptolemais, and saluted the brethren, and abode with them one day.As for us, our voyage was over when having sailed from Tyre we reached Ptolemais. here we inquired after the welfare of the brethren, and remained a day with them. And journeying by ship from Tyre we came to Ptolemais; and there we had talk with the brothers and were with them for one day.
Acts 21:8And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and came to Cesarea; and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven; and abode with him.On the morrow we left Ptolemais and went on to Caesarea, where we came to the house of Philip the Evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.And on the day after, we went away and came to Caesarea, where we were guests in the house of Philip, the preacher, who was one of the seven.
Acts 21:9And the same man had four daughters, virgins, who prophesied. Now Philip had four unmarried daughters who were prophetesses; And he had four daughters, virgins, who were prophets.
Acts 21:10And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judea a certain prophet, named Agabus.and during our somewhat lengthy stay a Prophet of the name of Agabus came down from Judaea. And while we were waiting there for some days, a certain prophet, named Agabus, came down from Judaea.
Acts 21:11And when he had come to us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Spirit, So will the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and will deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. When he arrived he took Paul's loincloth, and bound his own feet and arms with it, and said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit, `So will the Jews in Jerusalem bind the owner of this loincloth, and will hand him over to the Gentiles.'"And he came to us, and took the band of Paul's clothing, and putting it round his feet and hands, said, The Holy Spirit says these words, So will the Jews do to the man who is the owner of this band, and they will give him up into the hands of the Gentiles.
Acts 21:12And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. As soon as we heard these words, both we and the brethren at Caesarea entreated Paul not to go up to Jerusalem. And hearing these things, we and those who were living in that place made request to him not to go to Jerusalem.
Acts 21:13Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep, and to break my heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. His reply was, "What can you mean by thus breaking my heart with your grief? Why, as for me, I am ready not only to go to Jerusalem and be put in chains, but even to die there for the sake of the Lord Jesus."Then Paul said, What are you doing, weeping and wounding my heart? for I am ready, not only to be a prisoner, but to be put to death at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 21:14And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.So when he was not to be dissuaded, we ceased remonstrating with him and said, "The Lord's will be done!"And as he might not be moved we did no more, saying, Let the purpose of God be done.
Acts 21:15And after those days we took up our furniture, and went up to Jerusalem.A few days afterwards we loaded our baggage-cattle and continued our journey to Jerusalem. And after these days we got ready and went up to Jerusalem.
Acts 21:16There went with us also certain of the disciples of Cesarea, and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge. Some of the disciples from Caesarea also joined our party, and brought with them Mnason, a Cyprian, one of the early disciples, at whose house we were to lodge. And some of the disciples from Caesarea went with us, taking a certain Mnason of Cyprus, one of the early disciples, in whose house we were to be living.
Acts 21:17And when we had come to Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly. At length we reached Jerusalem, and there the brethren gave us a hearty welcome. And when we came to Jerusalem, the brothers were pleased to see us.
Acts 21:18And the day following Paul went in with us to James: and all the elders were present. On the following day we went with Paul to call on James, and all the Elders of the Church came also. And on the day after, Paul went with us to James, and all the rulers of the church were present.
Acts 21:19And when he had saluted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministry. After exchanging friendly greetings, Paul told in detail all that God had done among the Gentiles through his instrumentality. And when he had said how glad he was to see them, he gave them a detailed account of the things which God had done through his work among the Gentiles.
Acts 21:20And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said to him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are who believe; and they are all zealous of the law:And they, when they had heard his statement, gave the glory to God. Then they said, "You see, brother, how many tens of thousands of Jews there are among those who have accepted the faith, and they are all zealous upholders of the Law.And hearing it, they gave praise to God; and they said to him, You see, brother, what thousands there are among the Jews, who have the faith; and they all have a great respect for the law:
Acts 21:21And they are informed concerning thee, that thou teachest all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying, That they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs. Now what they have been repeatedly told about you is that you teach all the Jews among the Gentiles to abandon Moses, and that you forbid them to circumcise their children or observe old-established customs. And they have had news of you, how you have been teaching all the Jews among the Gentiles to give up the law of Moses, and not to give circumcision to their children, and not to keep the old rules.
Acts 21:22What is it therefore? the multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come. What then ought you to do? They are sure to hear that you have come to Jerusalem; What then is the position? They will certainly get news that you have come.
Acts 21:23Do therefore this that we say to thee: we have four men who have a vow on them;so do this which we now tell you. We have four men here who have a vow resting on them.Do this, then, which we say to you: We have four men who have taken an oath;
Acts 21:24Take them, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things of which they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, and keepest the law.Associate with these men and purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses so that they can shave their heads. Then everybody will know that there is no truth in these stories about you, but that in your own actions you yourself scrupulously obey the Law.Go with these, and make yourself clean with them, and make the necessary payments for them, so that they may be free from their oath: and everyone will see that the statements made about you are not true, but that you put yourself under rule, and keep the law.
Acts 21:25As concerning the Gentiles who believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from lewdness. But as for the Gentiles who have accepted the faith, we have communicated to them our decision that they are carefully to abstain from anything sacrificed to an idol, from blood, from what is strangled, and from fornication."But as to the Gentiles who have the faith, we sent a letter, giving our decision that they were to keep themselves from offerings made to false gods, and from blood, and from the flesh of animals put to death in ways against the law, and from the evil desires of the body.
Acts 21:26Then Paul took the men, and the next day purifying himself with them, entered into the temple, to signify the accomplishment of the days of purification, until an offering should be offered for every one of them.So Paul associated with the men; and the next day, having purified himself with them, he went into the Temple, giving every one to understand that the days of their purification were finished, and there he remained until the sacrifice for each of them was offered. Then Paul took the men, and on the day after, making himself clean with them, he went into the Temple, giving out the statement that the days necessary for making them clean were complete, till the offering was made for every one of them.
Acts 21:27And when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews who were from Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the people, and laid hands on him,But, when the seven days were nearly over, the Jews from the province of Asia, having seen Paul in the Temple, set about rousing the fury of all the people against him.And when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews from Asia, seeing him in the Temple, got the people together and put their hands on him,
Acts 21:28Crying out, Men of Israel, help. This is the man that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further, hath brought Greeks also into the temple; and hath polluted this holy place. They laid hands on him, crying out, "Men of Israel, help! help! This is the man who goes everywhere preaching to everybody against the Jewish people and the Law and this place. And besides, he has even brought Gentiles into the Temple and has desecrated this holy place."Crying out, Men of Israel, come to our help: this is the man who is teaching all men everywhere against the people and the law and this place: and in addition, he has taken Greeks into the Temple, and made this holy place unclean.
Acts 21:29(For they had seen before with him in the city, Trophimus, an Ephesian, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.)(For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, and imagined that Paul had brought him into the Temple.)For they had seen him before in the town with Trophimus of Ephesus, and had the idea that Paul had taken him with him into the Temple.
Acts 21:30And all the city was moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul and drew him out of the temple. And forthwith the doors were shut. The excitement spread through the whole city, and the people rushed in crowds to the Temple, and there laid hold of Paul and began to drag him out; and the Temple gates were immediately closed. And all the town was moved, and the people came running together and put their hands on Paul, pulling him out of the Temple: and then the doors were shut.
Acts 21:31And as they went about to kill him, tidings came to the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. But while they were trying to kill Paul, word was taken up to the Tribune in command of the battalion, that all Jerusalem was in a ferment. And while they were attempting to put him to death, news came to the chief captain of the band that all Jerusalem was out of control.
Acts 21:32Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down to them. And when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating Paul.He instantly sent for a few soldiers and their officers, and came down among the people with all speed. At the sight of the Tribune and the troops they ceased beating Paul. And straight away he took some armed men and went quickly down to them: and the Jews, seeing them, gave no more blows to Paul.
Acts 21:33Then the chief captain came near and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains: and inquired who he was, and what he had done. Then the Tribune, making his way to him, arrested him, and, having ordered him to be secured with two chains, proceeded to ask who he was and what he had been doing. Then the chief captain came near and took him, and gave orders for him to be put in chains, questioning them as to who he was and what he had done.
Acts 21:34And some cried one thing, some another, among the multitude: and when he could not know the certainty for the tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the castle. Some of the crowd shouted one accusation against Paul and some another, until, as the uproar made it impossible for the truth to be ascertained with certainty, the Tribune ordered him to be brought into the barracks. And some said one thing and some another, among the people: and as he was not able to get a knowledge of the facts because of the noise, he gave orders for Paul to be taken into the army building.
Acts 21:35And when he came upon the stairs, so it was that he was borne by the soldiers, for the violence of the people.When Paul was going up the steps, he had to be carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the mob;And when he came on to the steps, he was lifted up by the armed men, because of the force of the people;
Acts 21:36For the multitude of the people followed, crying, Away with him.for the whole mass of the people pressed on in the rear, shouting, "Away with him!"For a great mass of people came after them, crying out, Away with him!
Acts 21:37And as Paul was to be led into the castle, he said to the chief captain, May I speak to thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek? When he was about to be taken into the barracks, Paul said to the Tribune, "May I speak to you?" "Do you know Greek?" the Tribune asked. And when Paul was about to be taken into the building, he said to the chief captain, May I say something to you? And he said, Have you a knowledge of Greek?
Acts 21:38Art not thou that Egyptian, who before these days madest an uproar, and leddest out into the wilderness four thousand men that were murderers?"Are you not the Egyptian who some years ago excited the riot of the 4,000 cut-throats, and led them out into the Desert?"Are you by chance the Egyptian who, before this, got the people worked up against the government and took four thousand men of the Assassins out into the waste land?
Acts 21:39But Paul said, I am a man who am a Jew of Tarsus, a city of Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and I beseech thee suffer me to speak to the people."I am a Jew," replied Paul, "belonging to Tarsus in Cilicia, and am a citizen of no unimportant city. Give me leave, I pray you, to speak to the people."But Paul said, I am a Jew of Tarsus in Cilicia, which is not an unimportant town: I make a request to you to let me say a word to the people.
Acts 21:40And when he had given him license, Paul stood on the stairs, and beckoned with the hand to the people. And when there was made entire silence, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, saying,So with his permission Paul stood on the steps and motioned with his hand to the people to be quiet; and when there was perfect silence he addressed them in Hebrew. And when he let him do so, Paul, from the steps, made a sign with his hand to the people, and when they were all quiet, he said to them in the Hebrew language,
